Meta and Microsoft capping an eventful day of earnings and here with the takeaways is Yahoo! Finance's tech editor, Dan Howley. Dan.

That's right. Let's start things off with with meta. They, uh, kind of had the the more interesting of the two stories. They beat on both the top and bottom line, but more importantly, they offered better guidance than initially anticipated. They say that Q2 revenue will come in between 42.5 billion, 45.5 billion. Uh, the street was looking for 44 billion. And so this kind of assuages some of the concerns for now that there's any kind of advertising slowdown coming as a result of the tariff uncertainty and broader economic uncertainty. Again, they beat for the quarter. They had EPS of $6.43. Uh, expectations were for $5.25. And revenue came in at 42.3 billion versus 41.3 billion anticipated in. Uh, but just want to point out, they also raised their full year capex estimates. They went from 60 billion between 60 and 65 billion to 64 billion to 72 billion. So a big jump there, and that's obviously related to all the the AI spending that they're going into. By the by, meta reality labs segment had an operating loss of 4.21 billion dollars for the quarter. So, obviously, not doing the best there. But let's switch over to Microsoft. They also beat on the top and bottom line. Uh, they saw cloud revenue of 42.4 billion. That was up 20%. Uh, one of the important things to point out here is that AI contributed 16 points of growth, growth to Azure revenue. Now, Wall Street was expecting 15.6 points. Uh, and basically, Microsoft was saying that that's a result of getting more capacity online. They've been repeatedly saying that their capacity constraint is causing headwinds, uh, it's why their AI isn't growing as fast as they would like, but now they're starting to get that online, and they're starting to be able to meet the demand that's already there that they haven't been able to meet before. Uh, one of the other things I want to just quickly point out, uh, is on the personal computing side, and that's their the PC business. They saw revenue of 13.4 billion. Wall Street thought it would come in at 12.6 billion. And part of the reason is that Windows OEM partners, uh, they brought in more sales, uh, into the the current quarter, just as kind of building up the the inventory because they said the inventory already was elevated and it remains so. So it's an idea of that pull forward of, of PC sales or PC shipments just trying to get ahead of any kind of tariff uncertainty in the prior quarter.

We earlier talked to Brent Phil of Jefferies, and he said something that kind of stuck with me, which he said, these are two desert island companies. In other words, if you're a chief information officer at a company or if you're an advertiser, the last thing that you will cut is your check you write to Microsoft, where the money you send to Microsoft every month, and that, and if you're an advertiser, what you spend on meta. So that even if you do get sort of economic deterioration because of the tariffs or for whatever other reason, maybe they'll cut spending these companies eventually, but that it would be sort of a last stand, or last straw, or last resort that they would take.
05:51
Dan Howley
Yeah, I mean, look, Microsoft, you obviously need to be in the cloud to to play with anything when it comes to the enterprise now. And then when it comes to advertising, it's it's meta, Facebook, whatever you want to call it, and Google. And you know, we did see declines, obviously, during COVID, uh, but that was super extreme time. So, uh, that's all back now. Um, and yeah, I mean, it does appear that they're, they're weathering whatever kind of storm is coming or isn't coming, or, you know, nothing.
06:37
Seana Smith
And then tomorrow, Amazon and Apple. We can do it all again.
06:43
Dan Howley
Yeah, and then I'll just take a nap for a month. Yeah.

Thank you, Dan. Appreciate it.

Meta sues AI ‘nudify' app Crush AI for advertising on its platforms
Meta has sued the maker of a popular AI 'nudify' app, Crush AI, that reportedly ran thousands of ads across Meta's platforms. In addition to the lawsuit, Meta says it's taking new measures to crack down on other apps like Crush AI. In a lawsuit filed in Hong Kong, Meta alleged Joy Timeline HK, the entity behind Crush AI, attempted to circumvent the company's review process to distribute ads for AI nudify services. Meta said in a blog post that it repeatedly removed ads by the entity for violating its policies, but claims Joy Timeline HK continued to place additional ads anyway. Crush AI, which uses generative AI to make fake, sexually explicit images of real people without their consent, reportedly ran more than 8,000 ads for its 'AI undresser' services on Meta's platform in the first two weeks of 2025, according to the author of the Faked Up newsletter, Alexios Mantzarlis. In a January report, Mantzarlis claimed that Crush AI's websites received roughly 90% of their traffic from either Facebook or Instagram, and that he flagged several of these websites to Meta. Crush AI reportedly evaded Meta's ad review processes by setting up dozens of advertiser accounts and frequently changed domain names. Many of Crush AI's advertiser accounts, according to Mantzarlis, were named 'Eraser Annyone's Clothes' followed by different numbers. At one point, Crush AI even had a Facebook page promoting its service. Facebook and Instagram are hardly the only platforms dealing with such challenges. As social media companies like X and Meta race to add generative AI to their apps, they've also struggled to moderate how AI tools can make their platforms unsafe for users, particularly minors. Researchers have found that links to AI undressing apps soared in 2024 on platforms like X and Reddit, and on YouTube, millions of people were reportedly served ads for such apps. In response to this growing problem, Meta and TikTok have banned keyword searches for AI nudify apps, but getting these services off their platforms entirely has proven challenging. In a blog post, Meta said it has developed new technology to specifically identify ads for AI nudify or undressing services 'even when the ads themselves don't include nudity.' The company said it is now using matching technology to help find and remove copycat ads more quickly, and has expanded the list of terms, phrases and emoji that are flagged by its systems. Boston, MA | REGISTER NOW Meta said it is also applying the tactics it has traditionally used to disrupt networks of bad actors to these new networks of accounts running ads for AI nudify services. Since the start of 2025, Meta said, it has disrupted four separate networks promoting these services. Outside of its apps, the company said it will begin sharing information about AI nudify apps through Tech Coalition's Lantern program, a collective effort between Google, Meta, Snap and other companies to prevent child sexual exploitation online. Meta says it has provided more than 3,800 unique URLs with this network since March. On the legislative front, Meta said it would 'continue to support legislation that empowers parents to oversee and approve their teens' app downloads.' The company previously supported the US Take It Down Act, and said it's now working with lawmakers to implement it.

The stock market is shifting its focus to the Fed from Trump: Morning Brief
President Trump's Truth Social posts aren't moving markets like they used to. At 8:04 a.m. ET Wednesday, the president posted on his social media platform, "OUR DEAL WITH CHINA IS DONE, SUBJECT TO FINAL APPROVAL WITH PRESIDENT XI AND ME." A post like that would've moved markets a month ago, as stocks were swinging on any and every trade-related update from the president. But on Wednesday, futures tied to the major indexes barely budged after Trump's post. Instead, stocks found their direction from economic data. By subscribing, you are agreeing to Yahoo's Terms and Privacy Policy At 8:30 a.m. ET, a cooler-than-expected reading of consumer prices for May sent futures higher as investors amped up bets that the Federal Reserve could cut interest rates at least twice this year. This marked the latest sign that markets have moved on from President Trump's trade war dictating every move. Instead, the focus is shifting back to the Federal Reserve and the path of the US economy. "For some period of time, tariffs were the only thing that mattered," Truist co-CIO Keith Lerner told Yahoo Finance on Wednesday. "And I think we're finding out [on Wednesday] a lot of other factors matter." The unwind of peak trade policy uncertainty certainly served as a catalyst to bring markets off their lows in April. But as the S&P 500 (^GSPC) has moved back to near-all-time highs over the past two weeks, strategists like Piper Sandler chief investment strategist Michael Kantrowitz have been highlighting that trade policy updates don't pack the same "oomph" as they did weeks ago. Measures like Bloomberg's Trade Policy Uncertainty Index, for instance, are well off their recent highs. The new reality for investors is that tariffs are here to stay. While the estimated effective tariff rate has fallen from a peak around 25%, it's still hovering near 15%. Wall Street strategists aren't raising their price targets on hopes that the effective tariff rate will return to 2.5%, but are instead betting that the US economy will remain resilient through the tariffs. This puts the focus back on the Fed, the trajectory of economic data, and hopes for more rate cuts from the central bank. Recession calls have faded over the past month as data has shown a labor market that is cooling but not rapidly deteriorating and inflation pressures continue to ease. This pushes the biggest market question back to the central bank and whether it will be able to ease policy this year for "good reasons," like cooling inflation, rather than a worsening labor market. "Combined with the solid May jobs report, the CPI data reduce the chances of a nasty bout of stagflation," Bank of America US economist Stephen Juneau wrote in a note to clients on Wednesday. "That means a lower risk of 'bad' cuts (due to a collapse in the labor market) but increased probability of "good" cuts (solid labor market and slowing inflation)." Whether or not the market's suspicion that things could be looking better for the Fed will be put to the test when Fed Chair Jerome Powell takes the podium on June 18 following the central bank's next policy decision.
