Police investigating explosion that damaged three houses in Bukit Mertajam
BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police are investigating an explosion at Taman Serumpun, here early this morning, which caused damage to three houses.
Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) District Police Chief ACP Helmi Aris said they received information from the public regarding the incident at 1:05 am, reporting a loud explosion in the residential area.
'Police investigations found that the explosion is believed to have originated from a firecracker thrown into one of the houses, and the impact of the explosion also caused damage to two adjacent houses.
'The incident caused damage to the ceilings and yards of all three houses. Vehicles at two of the houses also sustained damage,' he said in a statement tonight.
Helmi said that based on preliminary investigations, they do not rule out the possibility that the incident was caused by debt issues and that the act is suspected to have been carried out by two men in a car, but further investigation is still ongoing.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code and Section 6 of the Explosives Act 1957, while urging public witnesses with information to come forward to the SPT District Police Headquarters (IPD) to assist the investigation or contact Senior Investigating Officer ASP Assan Alimudin at 012-4418081.

Trader allegedly assaulted by royal family member at Kuantan nightclub
KUALA LUMPUR: Police are investigating a case involving a trader who was allegedly assaulted by an individual believed to be a member of the Pahang royal family at an entertainment outlet here last month. Post-mortem reveals mother and son died from stab wounds to chest and back
MELAKA: A post-mortem has confirmed that a mother and her eldest son were fatally stabbed in the chest and back, in an incident where the suspect is believed to be the woman's second son, aged 17. Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the 51-year-old teacher had suffered stab wounds to her chest and back, while her 21-year-old son died from a stab wound to the chest. 'A third victim, the youngest son aged 13, remains in intensive care at Melaka Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition,' he said in a statement today. Police said the suspect was arrested outside the family home, appearing dazed at the time. A 20cm bloodstained folding knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was found in a school bag outside the house. The incident is believed to have occurred around 5 am on Thursday, with the victims were found unresponsive and covered in blood in the living room. The teenager has been remanded for seven days until June 19 by Magistrate N. Sivashangari at the Ayer Keroh Magistrate's Court, to assist investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
