TOKYO: Sumo crowned a new grand champion in record time on Wednesday as Onosato became the fastest to attain the exalted rank of yokozuna in the Japanese sport's modern era. The 24-year-old's elevation by the Japan Sumo Association came after he appeared in just 13 professional tournaments, eight fewer than the current record holder.
The wrestler, who weighs 191kg (421lb, 30 stone) and is 1.92 meters (6ft 3in) tall, became the 75th grand champion in the centuries-old history of sumo. He was the second to reach the top rank in the space of four months, following History's promotion in January. The two will go head-to-head for the first time as yokozuna in July in Nagoya.
Onosato also became the first Japan-born wrestler to reach the rank since 2017. Six of the last seven grand champions were born in Mongolia. Onosato was recommended for promotion on Monday after he won the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament a day earlier for his second straight title and the fourth of his career.
"I am truly happy. Now, things will become more important than ever. I want to stay focused and continue to work hard," he told a press conference after being formally promoted. "This is a very much unknown territory for me. I want to maintain my style, be Onosato, and I will work hard to become a unique and unparalleled yokozuna."
There are no set criteria for promotion from the second-highest rank of ozeki, and cases are considered by the Yokozuna Deliberation Council. Hoshoryu's promotion in January meant that sumo avoided having no grand champion for the first time in more than 30 years. Onosato's promotion was the fastest since the current six-tournament calendar was introduced in 1958. – AFP

Marini was hospitalized after crashing at the Suzuka circuit on Wednesday, his Honda HRC team said. He was stabilized and will remain under observation in Japan until fit to travel. The 27-year-old rider posted a picture on his Instagram feed of him lying in a hospital bed. 'Thanks everyone for the support! I'll keep you posted,' he wrote in Italian. Marini, who finished 15th in the British MotoGP at Silverstone on Sunday, was testing for the Suzuka 8-Hour. The annual endurance race, one of Japan's biggest motorcycling events, is held at the Honda-owned home Suzuka circuit that also hosts the Formula One Japanese Grand Prix. Marini completed the first day without incident but crashed heavily on the second, suffering a dislocated hip, knee ligament damage, fractures to his sternum and collarbone and a right collapsed lung. 'Honda HRC and the Honda HRC Castrol team will support Marini fully in his recovery,' the team said in a statement. ‘Oh no!': Malaysian PM sticks boot into booed Man Utd

KUALA LUMPUR: A fan sits in the stands before the exhibition friendly football match between Manchester United and Asean All-Stars at the National Stadium Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur on May 28, 2025. - AFP KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's prime minister has stuck the boot into Manchester United by suggesting they could be relegated next season, having watched the fallen Premier League giants booed off in Kuala Lumpur. Ruben Amorim's demoralized side suffered an embarrassing 1-0 friendly defeat to a Southeast Asian XI in front of more than 70,000 in the Malaysian capital on Wednesday. That came after United finished a lowly 15th in the league and failed to lift a trophy, one of their poorest seasons in recent memory. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was in the crowd at Bukit Jalil National Stadium and could not resist a dig afterwards. 'Oh no! Manchester United failed to win a trophy again. Looks like you guys are going to have a 'headache' next season,' Anwar wrote on Facebook. 'Hopefully you don't get relegated to the Championship,' he added, referring to England's second tier of football. Amorim's side play the Hong Kong team on Friday in their second and final match of their Asian post-season tour. The game at the 40,000-capacity Hong Kong Stadium was yet to sell out on the eve of the friendly. — AFP

Messi and Suarez each score twice as Miami rips Montreal

MIAMI: Inter Miami's Luis Suarez celebrates scoring his team's third goal with Lionel Messi during their team's Major League Soccer match against CF Montreal at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on May 28, 2025. - AFP MIAMI: Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez each scored two goals to spark Inter Miami to a 4-2 Major League Soccer victory over visiting Montreal on Wednesday. Argentine superstar Messi opened the scoring in the 27th minute and assisted on Suarez's first goal in the 68th minute for a 2-0 edge. Uruguayan star Suarez scored again in the 71st minute before Montreal's Dante Sealy answered in the 74th minute. Messi struck again in the 87th minute before Victor Loturi pulled one back from the Canadian club two minutes into stoppage time. Miami jumped to sixth in the Eastern Conference with seven wins and five drawn from 15 matches while East doormat Montreal slid to 1-10 with five drawn. Miami had lost twice and drawn twice in the past four matches. 'We had to take responsibility for the poor results. It's a matter of correcting to regain confidence,' said Suarez, who added the victory 'means a lot ... We have to continue to gain confidence in this kind of game.' Inter coach Javier Mascherano was concerned about injuries to defenders Gonzalo Lujan, Tomas Aviles and Jordi Alba. 'We needed to cut the negative dynamic. I'm happy,' he said. 'Unfortunately (the victory) is tarnished by the departure of Gonzalo, Jordi and Toto. 'In the case of Gonzalo and Jordi it was something muscular, which tomorrow we will see how far it is. In the case of 'Toto' it was the ankle that swelled in a stomp. Maybe he could continue. He wanted to continue.' Overall league leader Philadelphia won 2-1 at Toronto as the Union rallied late after Norway's Ola Brynhildsen scored in the 75th minute. Nathan Harriel netted the equalizer for the Union in the 86th minute and Germany's Kai Wagner scored the game winner two minutes into stoppage time. — AFP The Union improved to 10-3-3 for a league-high 33 points while none of the three clubs just behind them on the table could manage full points, second-place Cincinnati drawing 3-3 with visiting Dallas and third-place Nashville drawing 2-2 at fourth-place Columbus. – AFP
