KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's prime minister has stuck the boot into Manchester United by suggesting they could be relegated next season, having watched the fallen Premier League giants booed off in Kuala Lumpur. Ruben Amorim's demoralized side suffered an embarrassing 1-0 friendly defeat to a Southeast Asian XI in front of more than 70,000 in the Malaysian capital on Wednesday.
That came after United finished a lowly 15th in the league and failed to lift a trophy, one of their poorest seasons in recent memory. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was in the crowd at Bukit Jalil National Stadium and could not resist a dig afterwards.
'Oh no! Manchester United failed to win a trophy again. Looks like you guys are going to have a 'headache' next season,' Anwar wrote on Facebook. 'Hopefully you don't get relegated to the Championship,' he added, referring to England's second tier of football.
Amorim's side play the Hong Kong team on Friday in their second and final match of their Asian post-season tour. The game at the 40,000-capacity Hong Kong Stadium was yet to sell out on the eve of the friendly. — AFP

Man City chief promises ‘swift' transfer deals for Club World Cup

LONDON: Manchester City's Spanish manager Pep Guardiola waves to the crowd after his team's English Premier League match against Fulham at Craven Cottage in London on May 25, 2025. - AFP MANCHESTER: Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak has promised the overhaul of Pep Guardiola's squad will continue at pace in the weeks ahead of the Club World Cup. After an unprecedented four consecutive Premier League titles, City suffered a dismal season by the standards set during Guardiola's reign. They finished a distant third in the Premier League, won just three of 10 games in the Champions League and lost the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace to end without a trophy for the first time since 2016/17. Khaldoon accepted the club were not 'aggressive' enough in the transfer market last year to rejuvenate their squad. City responded in January by signing Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Nico Gonzalez at a combined cost of more than £172 million ($232 million). More arrivals are expected before the start of the Club World Cup on June 14 despite Guardiola's plea to work with a smaller squad next season. 'This January we had to act,' Khaldoon said in his annual end-of-season interview. 'Four players in January (came in), and that gives you an idea of what's coming this summer because we will continue. We have clearly identified who exactly are the targets, in what positions, and we have our clear number one option, our clear number two option. And we'll go about our business and it will be very clear, very swift. And our objective is to try to be ready with the new squad for the Club World Cup.' Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White, Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki and AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders are among those linked with a move to the Etihad. Guardiola extended his contract with the club until 2027 back in November during the worst of City's struggles. Khaldoon is confident the side that has dominated English football over the last decade will quickly be back on top. 'We will be back. This season is a season that's now behind us. Today is a new day. We start working and preparing for next season,' he added. 'I can assure you, this club will do everything possible to come back to the standards that we know we all can achieve and that we know, we will achieve.' — AFP

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE: Honda HRC Castrol team's Italian rider Luca Marini takes part in a practice session of the MotoGP British Grand Prix at Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire, central England, on May 24, 2025. - AFP TOKYO: Italian MotoGP rider Luca Marini has suffered serious injuries, including a collapsed lung, after a heavy fall while testing for an endurance race in Japan. Marini was hospitalized after crashing at the Suzuka circuit on Wednesday, his Honda HRC team said. He was stabilized and will remain under observation in Japan until fit to travel. The 27-year-old rider posted a picture on his Instagram feed of him lying in a hospital bed. 'Thanks everyone for the support! I'll keep you posted,' he wrote in Italian. Marini, who finished 15th in the British MotoGP at Silverstone on Sunday, was testing for the Suzuka 8-Hour. The annual endurance race, one of Japan's biggest motorcycling events, is held at the Honda-owned home Suzuka circuit that also hosts the Formula One Japanese Grand Prix. Marini completed the first day without incident but crashed heavily on the second, suffering a dislocated hip, knee ligament damage, fractures to his sternum and collarbone and a right collapsed lung.
