On the Podcast: Celine Song on ‘Materialists,' Matchmaking, and Her Favorite Rom-Coms
Everyone's talking about the new A24 film Materialists—and for good reason. It's not only an exploration of today's impossible dating scene, but also a standout addition to the modern rom-com canon, paying homage to classics like Broadcast News and You've Got Mail.
On today's episode of The Run-Through, Chloe and Lisa Macabasco, Vogue's research manager and senior digital line editor, sit down with director Celine Song (Past Lives) to talk about the inspiration behind the film and Song's brief, real-life stint as a matchmaker—just like Lucy, the character played by Dakota Johnson.
Earlier in the show, Chioma and Chloe dive into Francesco Risso's departure from Marni and Martine Rose's fabulous men's spring 2026 show, which created quite a buzz in London over the weekend.

Maybe AI can help you date – with apps and in real life
SWIPED OUT Related : A. I've been thinking about artificial intelligence a lot, mainly because of some survey results I've been sitting with. Match and the Advertisement Many of us freak out and think, 'Oh no! People are getting robot boyfriends and won't be able to relate to humans anymore.' But a lot of what AI is used for is practice , it seems. They ask AI to help them with a response to a dating profile question. They ask how some might interpret tone. They dabble in conversation. As we know, AI is not always on the mark, but it's a way to test a thought. It also comes up with some fairly good ideas for date activities. I have no problem with the ethics of using AI for this, within reason. It's great for people who might want to try a few one-liners after matching with someone online. Advertisement I suspect it also helps prepare you for in-person interaction. If you're more confident in your responses in writing, it starts to cross over. The other thing to know about in-person charm: Most people are a mess at it. I suspect that those who seem smooth are actually spinning in circles on the inside. Please take a deep breath and know you're not alone. Or say what you feel. We hosted a 'Materialists' movie screening the other night, and at some point before the event I felt socially weird and stood outside. A person with a ticket came up to me and said hello, and I think I said, 'Sorry I'm standing outside; I am socially overwhelmed because I worked from home all day, and now I'm little weirdo.' They were like, 'Same.' So there you go. Most people are second-guessing themselves and thinking 'same.' Except for the AI. The AI is quite confident. Related : MEREDITH READERS RESPOND: Realize that most people are socially uncertain and also just making it up as they go along. The notion that everyone is a social star except for us is a common misperception. Then practice. Conversational skills can be learned. Read, see movies, chat with strangers, make comments to people, seem friendly, and soon it will become much more comfortable. WIZEN Shy or not, you still have to make decisions. Maybe dating apps aren't for you. But if you want to meet people, you'll have to get out there somehow. It seems obvious, but what are your hobbies/interests? Explore those in a low-pressure environment where the emphasis isn't on dating or hooking up. Advertisement EMPRESSETHEL Not to oversimplify, but if you need time to get to know someone then you will be best served in environments that support that. Volunteer, join groups; anything else that allows you to have time with someone will better serve you. SUNALSORISES No one is 'impossibly shy.' Just shy. Get it in your mind that you don't need to blow someone away with the initial 30 seconds. Eye contact, a gentle smile, and 'hello' is all that's required. JIM501 If you don't like what's going on online, don't use it. Some sites offer more of a matching/screening process thru, e.g., questionnaires or are smaller communities built around a mutual interest. They may charge a fee. But dating sites are just one of the many ways to meet people. Consider: Do you even want to date? The reality is it is challenging at times. Maybe just making friends first is better for you. Health concerns keep UK's Princess Catherine away from Royal Ascot tradition
Princess Catherine has withdrawn from Royal Ascot as she continues her recovery from cancer, missing the event, which will be attended by Prince William and King Charles. The future queen has gradually returned to duties after remission in January. The Royal Ascot, a cherished event for the royal family, was also Queen Elizabeth II's favourite sporting occasion. Britain's Catherine, Princess of Wales, who is recovering from cancer, has pulled out of the Royal Ascot race meeting, her Kensington Palace office said on Wednesday. The famed sporting event in Berkshire in southern England is a key event in the royal calendar. Catherine, also known as Kate, would not be attending Royal Ascot with her husband, Prince William, King Charles III and Queen Camilla as she continued to 'find the right balance following her battle with cancer,' the Press Association news agency added. The 43-year-old future queen has been making a gradual return to public duties since she announced she was cancer-free in September 2024. In March that year, the mother-of-three revealed she was undergoing a course of 'preventative chemotherapy' for an undisclosed cancer. Kate, who in January revealed she was in remission, was said to be disappointed not to be able to attend Royal Ascot, a renowned social and sporting occasion for which the royal family came out in force. The annual five-day race meeting was said to be the late Queen Elizabeth II's favourite sporting event. Royal Ascot begins each day of the week with the Royal Procession, a historic tradition in which the monarch and various accompanying members of the royal family arrive along the track in horse-drawn carriages. The enclosure operates a strict dress code: top hats and morning coats—jackets with a long 'tail'—for men and hats and knee-length or longer dresses or skirts for women. The king announced in early 2024 that he, too, had been diagnosed with an unspecified cancer. He has since returned to public duties but is still undergoing treatment. Catherine on Saturday appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace with the rest of the royal family following Charles' annual birthday parade. Johnny Marr turned down ‘eye-watering' Smiths reunion offer because the ‘vibe' wasn't right
Johnny Marr has confirmed that The Smiths were recently offered the chance to reform for an 'eye-watering' amount but he turned it down because the 'vibe' wasn't right. The indie band, fronted by Morrissey, formed in Manchester in 1982 with Marr as the guitarist, Andy Rourke on bass and Mike Joyce on drums. Rourke died in May 2023, aged 59, following a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer. The group produced several critically acclaimed albums including Meat is Murder (1985) and The Queen is Dead (1986) but split in 1987, with Marr and Morrissey at loggerheads ever since. In a recent appearance on the Stick to Football YouTube show, which is presented by former England and Manchester United player Gary Neville, Marr said the group had been made an offer to reform in 2024. Marr said: 'We got made an offer really recently, in fact, but yeah, I said no. It was a little bit about principles, but I'm not an idiot, I just think the vibe's not right.' He added: 'It was an eye-watering amount of money, but also, I really like what I'm doing now which makes it a lot easier. I like where I'm at. I still want to write the best song I've ever written. I want to be a better performer.' News of a potential reunion was made public at the time thanks to Morrissey, with the singer announcing on his website: 'In June 2024 AEG Entertainment Group made a lucrative offer to both Morrissey and Marr to tour worldwide as 'The Smiths' throughout 2025. 'Morrissey said yes to the offer; Marr ignored the offer. 'Morrissey undertakes a largely sold out tour of the USA in November. Marr continues to tour as a special guest to New Order.' The feud continued between the pair with Morrissey claiming in September 2024 that Marr had applied for copyright of The Smiths name 'without any consultation' with him, and without giving him a chance to object. In a statement, Marr's representatives denied the claims and explainied that he'd offered a joint ownership document to the singer following a third-party attempt to use the band's name. In 2022, Marr said there was 'zero chance' he'd ever work with Morrissey again. Speaking to the late Steve Wright on BBC Radio Two, Marr said it had been '18 or maybe 15' years since he had last spoken to Morrissey in person. At the time the pair were involved in a fresh spat after Morrissey wrote an open letter to Marr asking him to stop bringing him up in interviews. Marr responded to his former bandmate on Instagram, writing: 'An 'open letter' hasn't really been a thing since 1953, It's all 'social media' now. Even Donald J Trump had that one down. Also, this fake news business… a bit 2021 yeah?'
