Naomi Osaka's shocking tactic at French Open after calling medical time out sparks buzz; ‘Fashion first I guess'

Hindustan Times26-05-2025

Naomi Osaka enjoyed the lead when she abruptly took a medical time break at the French Open. In a much awaited first-round encounter in Paris, the four-time Major champion lined up against Paula Badosa, the 10th seed.
In an odd beginning to her allotted medical time off, Osaka contacted the physiotherapist and began trimming her nails after defeating Badosa in a close opening set via tie-break.
The Japanese star arrived at the court wearing a cute pink outfit with a sakura theme, which included flower hair clips and a frilly skirt.
Osaka's nails were painted with matching cherry blossom art, demonstrating her attention to even the slightest details.
However, the legend had to sacrifice her nails after winning a set with a tight opening.
Reacting to viral clip and pictures of Osaka, one X user wrote: 'Medical Time Out for Naomi Osaka. She's cutting one of her nails.. fashion first I guess.'
'Naomi Osaka cutting her nails on court is a MOOD lmao,' another quipped.
'The pain and beauty of long nails 😭😭😭,' the Tennis Letter wrote.

Tennis-Sabalenka eyes claycourt supremacy with Gauff hoping to be second time lucky

PARIS, - The French Open women's singles final takes centre stage at Roland Garros on Saturday. World number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus takes on last year's semi-finalist, American Coco Gauff, as she looks to land her first French Open crown to add to her three Grand Slam titles. SABALENKA POWER Long considered a hardcourt specialist, the 27-year-old top seed Sabalenka, the most powerful player on the tour, will try to establish herself as an all-rounder with her first title in Paris. She has already won back-to-back titles at the Australian Open in 2023-24 as well as the U.S. Open crown in 2024 but she had never before reached the final in Paris with the slower clay not naturally suited to her heavy-hitting game. Her three-set semi-final victory on Thursday over four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek, who was looking to become the first woman since tennis turned professional in 1968 to win four editions of the tournament in a row, elevated Sabalenka to a new level. The Belarusian did not change her power game or adapt it to clay. Instead she used it effectively to forge past her opponent. Despite the closed roof that made the ball even slower, Sabalenka's serve was still a major weapon as she dished out a third-set bagel against Swiatek, who had been on a 26-match winning streak at the tournament and is nicknamed the 'queen of clay'. "I wasn't really trying to overhit," Sabalenka said after her semi-final win. "I didn't really think to overhit and hit harder than I usually do." It is this power that Gauff, a far more natural claycourt player than Sabalenka, will need to overcome. A finalist here in 2022, Gauff is also looking for her first singles crown in Paris. She won the women's doubles last year but will be looking to add the Suzanne Lenglen cup to her Grand Slam collection that so far has one major, the 2023 U.S. Open where she beat Sabalenka in the final. The American does not have anywhere near the punching power from the serve or baseline that her opponent will bring into the encounter but her athleticism, precision and ability to stay in the rallies will be key. One of the best movers on the tour, Gauff has dropped just one set en route to the final. She also superbly handled the pressure in her semi-final against local wildcard Lois Boisson, coping admirably with home crowd's vocal support for the surprise semi-finalist. "Obviously she's someone who has great big shots, and she's going to come out aggressive," Gauff said. "She's going to come out swinging. I think I just have to expect that and do my best to kind of counter that." FRENCH OPEN ORDER OF PLAY ON SATURDAY COURT PHILIPPE CHATRIER 1- Aryna Sabalenka v 2-Coco Gauff

No. 2 Gauff faces No. 1 Sabalenka in women's final

The biggest difference Coco Gauff sees between the player who lost her first Grand Slam final at the 2022 French Open at age 18, and the one who will play for the trophy again on Saturday (June 7, 2025) at 21, this time against No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, is the way she views the importance of the occasion. Three years ago at Roland-Garros, Gauff was making her debut on that sort of stage and with that sort of prize at stake. It felt like the outcome meant absolutely everything, a burden that was a lot at the time and made her nervous. Now, the No. 2-ranked Gauff says, she understands 'how miniscule' the result on Saturday (June 7, 2025) is in the scheme of things. 'Everybody is dealing with way bigger things in life than losing a final,' the American said after beating 361st-ranked French wild-card entry Loïs Boisson 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals on Thursday (June 5, 2025). 'I'm sure there are hundreds of players that would kill to win or lose a final, so just knowing that [makes] me realize how lucky and privileged I am to be in this position,' Gauff said. 'At first, I thought it would be the end of the world if I lost, and, you know, the sun still rose the next day... Regardless of the result, the sun will still rise.' Hot on clay: On the French Open Here's another key difference: The Gauff of today is a Grand Slam champion. She won the 2023 U.S. Open; her opponent in that final just so happened to be Sabalenka. 'I just remember kind of feeling,' Gauff said, 'like I was holding my breath to the match point.' Their head-to-head series is tied 5-5 entering the first No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in a French Open women's final since Serena Williams beat Maria Sharapova in 2013. Sabalenka beat Gauff in their most recent meeting, which came at the Madrid Open in May on the type of red clay used at Roland-Garros. So Gauff is well aware of Sabalenka's many talents, which were on full display during a 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-0 semifinal victory over three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek. 'She can come up with some big shots and big winners pretty much at all areas of the court,' Gauff said about the 27-year-old from Belarus. 'She's a fighter, as well. She's going to stay in the match regardless of the scoreline.' After getting pushed to a third set by Swiatek, who had won 26 matches in a row at the French Open, Sabalenka was pretty much perfect down the stretch. Even Sabalenka called the lopsided nature of that last set 'shocking for me.' She didn't make a single unforced error; Swiatek had 12. 'The pace was from her [was] super fast,' Swiatek said. 'It was just hard to get into any rally.' Sabalenka took over the top ranking from Swiatek last October and has remained there. Sabalenka is 40-6 this season with three titles and, while her three major championships all came on hard courts — at the 2023 and 2024 Australian Opens and the 2024 U.S. Open — the work she's put in to improve on clay is clearly paying off. 'I can go flat. I can [play] with the spin. I can go back and play in defense,' Sabalenka said. 'That's what works the best on the clay court for me.' The truth is, regardless of the surface, Sabalenka still appears to be most comfortable when she hits the ball as hard as possible. Her high-risk style offers a contrast to Gauff, who has been making an effort to be more aggressive with her forehand but usually is at her best when she is making opponents hit shot after shot because she can get to everything with her speed, instincts and defense. 'She's going to come out swinging,' Gauff said. 'I just have to expect that and do my best to kind of counter that.'
