Scarratt keen to play part in England's 'big year'
Women's Six Nations: England v ItalyVenue: LNER Community Stadium, York Date: Sunday, 23 March Kick-off: 15:00 GMTCoverage: Watch on BBC Two, iPlayer, BBC Sport website & app; listen on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra
Experienced centre Emily Scarratt wants to play her part in a "big year ahead" for England, with a home Rugby World Cup to come during August and September. The 35-year-old has appeared in each of the past four World Cups for the Red Roses, starring in the final when England beat Canada to win the competition in 2014.England's preparation for this year's tournament continues with the Women's Six Nations. Coach John Mitchell's side begin their bid for a seventh consecutive title against Italy in York on Sunday, with Scarratt starting at outside centre. When asked about her hopes for World Cup selection, Loughborough Lightning's Scarratt told BBC Sport: "I'm going to try my best. We've got so many good players throughout the squad and ultimately Mitch will make whatever decision he thinks is best."Hopefully I'm still showing I've got something there to offer; whether it's a starting shirt, being on the bench or being part of the squad."I'm definitely keen on being a part of that big year ahead."
Scarratt will win her 117th cap against Italy - her tally of appearances greater than any other member of England's 37-woman squad for the Six Nations. She was out of action for 13 months before returning in February 2024 following neck surgery, and came off the bench in both England's Six Nations Grand Slam decider against France and the win over Canada in October which secured a second consecutive WXV1 title.Mitchell said before last year's Six Nations that he was considering using Scarratt at inside centre and she wore 12 in last year's corresponding fixture against Italy in Parma. In an England line-up which contains two players making their first international starts and two uncapped players among the replacements, Scarratt will begin at 13 on Sunday.
"That [whether she plays inside or outside centre] is probably more of a conversation for Mitch. Certainly in this Six Nations, it's definitely a focus on 13," Scarratt said."Jade Shekells has come in to fill a bit of that 12 gap behind Tatyana [Heard], and Holly [Aitchison] is playing there this weekend."There are times where I will fit into that, whether it's in training or in games. We're blessed with a few people that can float into different positions."Playing 13, trying to compete for a shirt with Megan Jones is tough at the moment, so if there's another opportunity to potentially play, I'll definitely take it. But at the moment, the focus is definitely on 13."Asked if she feels more comfortable playing at outside centre, she added: "I think so, just looking at the numbers and the amount of times I've played there compared to everywhere else."I was getting into a little groove at 12 and I don't mind it. The way England play and bits at Loughborough where it's a bit more interchangeable, they kind of blend into one a little bit."I do prefer perhaps being one out, especially defensively - I think there are more problems to be solved out a channel wider. But I just would want to be on the field, to be honest."

QPR to appoint former Champions League manager, 44, who launched Real Madrid star's career after Marti Cifuentes axe
QPR are set to name former Rennes and Strasbourg boss Julien Stephan as the club's new head coach. Rangers placed Marti Cifuentes on gardening leave in April after Sunsport revealed he was close to quitting the club following a breakdown in his relationship with 27-year-old chief executive Christian Nourry. 2 2 The decision to stand down Cifuentes came after the Spaniard's representatives made contact with West Brom following Tony Mowbray's sacking last month. West Brom have since appointed Ryan Mason as their new boss. But with no chance of a thawing in relations between Nourry and Cifuentes, Rangers turned their attention to Stephan. The 44-year-old has been keen to work in England since being sacked by Ligue 1 side Rennes last November. Stephan guided Rennes to the knock-out stages of the Europa League for the first time in 2018 where they lost 4-3 to Arsenal. A year later he led the club to victory over PSG in the French Cup final. The Frenchman also spent two seasons with Strasbourg before returning to his former club in 2023. Stephan brought a host of big-name stars through the ranks at Rennes. He was responsible for launching the career of Real Madrid star Eduardo Camavinga, and worked with Barcelona playmaker Raphinha. And he also worked with Serhu Guirassy, Jeremy Doku and Ismaila Sarr. Stephan has agreed terms on a two-year deal with the Championship club. QPR have been out of the top flight since relegation from the Premier League in 2015. They are preparing for their 11th-straight season in the Championship, with just two top-half finishes in that time. Last season they finished 15th, six points clear of the relegation zone but ten behind the playoff places in what was ultimately a disappointing campaign.

'A bizarre appointment'
Hull City have given Sergej Jakirovic an opportunity for his first taste of English football after sacking previous head coach Ruben Selles - but some of you aren't so pleased for what you had to say about the appointment:Rob: Yet another bizarre appointment by the chairman. No experience of English football and in particular the Championship, which is such a difficult league. I hope I'm wrong but this just smacks of the previous two appointments whereby the chairman had to sack them and bring someone else in. I'm not holding my breath I don't get it! Firstly the decision to part with Rosenior after a seventh-placed finish, then to jettison Selles after keeping them up! What does the owner want? Why not go for someone with a proven track record in the Championship?Joe: As Hull fan that's watched us every week, week in week out, we need to actually concentrate on the squad and the quality we bring in. We need players who want to play for the club and give it their all, and realise we are a Championship team and the style of football has to be to win as many games as possible and realise we aren't gonna hammer people 5-0 every week - we have to win the close games. Hopefully he will be given the tools he needs to build a strong I cannot believe we are doing this again. It's the exact same as last season. Sack a promising, well-respected coach with good results in the English game for a complete nobody with no experience in English football. We were lucky to attract Selles last season and just about stay up. Who are we going to find at Christmas after this new guy is gone and we're bottom of the table again?Mark: He is on his eighth managerial job in eight years, and out of the previous seven only two lasted more than one season, not exactly a ringing We should have got a reliable manager who knows the league. The owner has unrealistic expectations as has proven over and again. Good luck to the new manager, he will need He doesn't know the league and he has a poor team to manage. Unless he can make lots of changes it will be a difficult season. And we don't know him at all so he won't be given long before we get At the moment, most City fans see Ilicali as being foolish for two bad appointments (Arveladze and Walters) and two awful sacking decisions (Rosenior and Selles). But that can all still be forgotten about if this unknown guy is a success. I'm pretty dubious but will give him a Yet again, another manager without Championship experience. Now it's time for another episode of 'dart in a map' recruitment which tends to be the policy of choice for the owner. Get it wrong again and we will be in trouble in the league and financially.
