Texas' Reese Atwood makes Texas Tech superstar NiJaree Canady pay on failed intentional walk
The Red Raiders were just four outs away from securing a victory in Game 1 of the Women's College World Series Final — and Canady was having no issues mowing down Texas' order as the Longhorns still had a doughnut on the scoreboard in the 1-0 game.
Then came the chaos.

With two runners on, Canady elected to intentionally walk Texas catcher Reese Atwood. But on what was supposed to be ball four, Canady left her pitch out over the plate, and Atwood made her pay for it as she knocked in both baserunners and the Longhorns took the lead.
Texas Tech couldn't strike back in the top of the final inning, and Texas took Game 1.

The mistake was a rare one for Canady, as she's widely considered the best pitcher in college softball.
The Kansas native played her first two collegiate seasons at Stanford, where she compiled a 41-10 pitching record and posted just a 0.67 ERA. She racked up 555 strikeouts to just 65 walks.
She won the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award last season, PAC-12 Pitcher of the Year, was a First Team All-American, and a two-time PAC-12 First-Teamer.
Canady then elected to give up the possible Stanford degree and received a whopping $1 million in NIL from Texas Tech to try and take the program out of the 29-21 gutter it was in a year ago.

This season, she led the nation with the only ERA under 1.00 and has guided the Red Raiders to a 59-13 record as they chase their first-ever national title.
She's certainly accustomed to throwing strikes, which is what may have been her downfall.
Atwood said postgame to ESPN's Holly Rowe that she noticed Canady's first pitch of the at-bat was in the zone — from there, she was hunting another to take a crack at.
'I knew I was gonna have to take a risk to do something for my team,' Atwood said.
Atwood was hitless throughout the WCWS prior to the game-winner, making the intentional walk decision and the miscue all the more brutal for Canady and Texas Tech.
The teams return to action Thursday when the Longhorns will have a chance to take the best-of-three series for the championship.

Rams QB Stetson Bennett pops off in first game of 2025, his best as a pro
Stetson Bennett kicked off 2025 with a great start. The former 2023 fourth-round pick out of Georgia led five scoring drives for the Rams, including two fourth-quarter touchdown passes. Bennett finished the game with 188 passing yards for two passing touchdowns on 16-of-24 attempts in the 31-21 win over the Dallas Cowboys. Bennett led the Rams on two touchdown drives to open the game (both of which ended in Blake Corum rushing scores) before the Rams added a field goal in the third quarter. He finally got the board himself with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Cody Schrader early in the fourth quarter before tossing a five-yarder to Brennan Presley in the subsequent drive. The beginning of Bennett's night was a good indication of how he'd fare on the field. In the first drive, he completed 5-of-7 passes for 75 yards, including a sensational fourth-down pass to receiver Xavier Smith to put the Rams in the red zone and set up Corum's first rushing score. He then led a 13-play, 64-yard drive on the second possession that ended with another Corum touchdown. Bennett completed 4-of-6 passes for 29 yards. Bennett didn't have a great start to the second half. He threw an interception to Cowboys defensive back Israel Mukuamu on a deep shot downfield. But, to Bennett's credit, the interception was more of an impressive play on the ball by Mukuamu than a bad throw by Bennett. The follow-up was encouraging, too. Bennett led a field goal drive immediately after throwing the pick followed by both of his touchdown pass drives. Overall, this was a great confidence-boosting game for Bennett. He looked to have complete control of Sean McVay's offense, hitting receivers at different levels of the field and scoring touchdowns. This is the type of player the Rams hoped they'd see at some point after drafting him. And it'll be good tape for McVay and the team to evaluate when deciding his future in 2026 and beyond. Josh Hader Injury Hurts Houston's Bid To Keep AL West Division Title
The first major industry of Josh Hader's career has placed the Houston Astros in a precarious position. Houston's long-standing lead in the American League West is threatened not only by the loss of their star closer but also by the hard-charging Seattle Mariners – a team determined to win its first pennant. Hader, sidelined with a capsule sprain in his left shoulder, has 28 saves and a 2.05 earned run average. He is averaging 13 strikeouts per nine innings and has a lifetime mark of 14.6. An All-Star in six different seasons, including 2025, the hard-throwing left-hander has been placed on the Astros' injured list and is not likely to return over the remaining six weeks of the season, according to manager Joe Espada. Although he hopes to be back for the playoffs, that is not guaranteed either. When a similar injury sidelined Milwaukee starter Brandon Woodruff in 2024, he needed surgical repair that cost him more than a year on the IL. Hader's Houston teammate J.P. France also had capsule-tear surgery that kept him sidelined for some 12 months. The star closer told Houston reporters that he won't throw for three weeks but will determine then whether to shut down for the season or perhaps submit to surgery. Hader, 31, is in the second season of a five-year, $95 million contract. Losing him now is a tough blow for the Astros, who seemed to be heading for their fifth straight American League West title before a recent tailspin – coupled with a Seattle surge – turned the divisional race into a toss-up. Houston lost two of its best hitters when third baseman Alex Bregman skipped to Boston as a free agent and outfielder Kyle Tucker went to the Chicago Cubs in an off-season trade. Injuries also idled designated hitter Jordan Alvarez and pitchers Lance McCullers, Jr. and Ronel Blanco, among others. In addition, free agent first baseman Christian Walker failed to hit after averaging 32 home runs a year with Arizona for three straight seasons. Hader, a nine-year veteran who has also pitched for Milwaukee and San Diego, will probably be replaced by a committee, according to Astros manager Joe Espada. Bryan Abreu already took the first opportunity for a save in the post-Hader world but lefties Bryan King, Bennett Sousa, and Steven Okert are also likely to figure into the mix & match situation. Houston and Seattle will lock horns in a crucial three-game series at Daikin Park from Sept. 19-21. Hader is not likely to participate, however. The lefty is 34-31 with 227 saves and a 2.64 career earned run average. He has topped 30 saves in five different seasons. He has a 1.64 post-season ERA but has never pitched in the World Series. Hader broke into the majors with the 2017 Milwaukee Brewers.

Archie Griffin first to be honored with new Ohio State football tradition
There was a plethora of news from the Ohio State football program on Saturday. Not only were four captains announced for the 2025 season, but the program's sixth "Block O" recipient was also unveiled. In addition to that, Ohio State announced that two-time Heisman Trophy-winning running back Archie Griffin will take part in a new tradition on the banks of the Olentangy. In an attempt to improve the environment at Ohio State football games, one of the new traditions will be an honor to ring the bell to start each game. In this case, Griffin will ring the bell for the first time ever prior to the season-opener against No. 1 Texas on Aug. 30. Griffin continues to be a great ambassador for Ohio State and is ever grateful for being recognized with this honor as well. 'I'm honored to be able to be the first bell ringer at Ohio State. It's something new that's going on at Ohio State, but I think it's going to work out extremely well because the Buckeyes are going to have a great season, and that bell is going to ring a lot,' Griffin said Saturday before an autograph session at Dick's Sporting Goods House of Sport. Ohio State honored Griffin by asking him to "Dot the I" in Script Ohio last season and also unveiled a statue of him prior to the first game of the season as well in 2024. Now, he'll literally ring in a new tradition as still the only two-time Heisman winner almost 50 years later.
