VfB Stuttgart vs Werder Bremen preview: The Nick Woltemade derby
VfB Stuttgart vs Werder Bremen preview: The Nick Woltemade derby
VfB Stuttgart
Life has been getting better for VfB Stuttgart.
They were pretty much in free fall in February, going on a six-match winless run. Stuttgart had fallen out of the European picture, and it looked like a crisis was incoming.

However, they've turned things around quite quickly. First they booked their place in the DFB Pokal final, defeating RB Leipzig 3-1 at home in the semifinals of the tournament. Then Die Schwaben got back on track in the Bundesliga, running rampant against VfL Bochum and ultimately winning 4-0.
Those two results have helped them reset themselves and set the stage for an important end to the season. Stuttgart are just one game away from cup glory, and an automatic spot in the UEFA Europa League as a result. They can also still qualify for Europe via the league, as they're only four points behind 6th place and a Conference League spot.
The Reds are led by two in-form forwards. Ermedin Demirović is the main striker, and he's in a fine run of form. This was capped off this past weekend when he secured a hat-trick in style against Bochum. Then there's his partner Nick Woltemade, who's become an incredible threat both when he drops deep and when he runs into the box.
The latter will be especially excited for this contest. Woltemade was an academy product at Bremen, and now he'll get the chance to put one over on his old club after departing in the offseason. While he still has love for his old home, he'll certainly want to make an impact and guide Stuttgart to another victory.

Team news
The hosts will be without a few key players, as Ameen Al Dakhil is suspended while Dan-Axel Zagadou, Josha Vagnoman, Justin Diehl, and Luca Raimund are all injured.
Werder Bremen
Werder Bremen have been a hard team to predict this campaign, and that was on show once against last Saturday.
They hosted 3rd place outfit Eintracht Frankfurt, and they dispatched them with relative ease. Oliver Burke put the home side in front near the half hour mark when he headed home a corner, and then Romano Schmid sealed the three points with a lovely curler late on.
What was especially surprising was Bremen's defensive performance. They were up against a free-flowing offensive unit, and they practically shut them down. They were solid, hard to break down, and barely gave up any opportunities. Goalkeeper Michael Zetterer had very little to do on the afternoon.

A big reason for that was the return of captain Marco Friedl. He's the team's best centerback, and he's immediately fixed a bunch of the issues at the back. The Austrian is a leader, with his presence leading to a calmness and composure on the field.
If Werder aren't leaking goals at the back, and they take their chances going forward, then they can beat anyone in Germany. While the European dream was dashed before, it might still be alive since they're five points back with six games to go.
For Bremen to have any hopes of doing that, they'll need to win as many games as possible. That run could continue this weekend.
Team news
The Green-Whites will only be without centerback Milos Veljkovic for the contest.

Will coach Mauricio Pochettino's US men's national team figure it out in time for next year's World Cup?
But first, there is the matter of the Gold Cup. The US will take a four-match losing streak (longest since 2007) into the opener against Trinidad and Tobago in San Jose, Calif., on Sunday. Again, the Americans will be deprived of the Serie A quartet — Weston McKennie and Tim Weah (Juventus) and Yunus Musah and Christian Pulisic (Milan). But even their experience did not prove to make a difference in defeats to Panama and Canada in the Nations League in Los Angeles in March. Advertisement 'The players are motivated, and maybe we can win the Gold Cup and arrive at the World Cup and do well,' Pochettino said. 'This is not going to have a massive impact on our emotions. We are going to be ready, I am not worried about that.' Advertisement Yet the real challenge for the US, 'A' team or otherwise, will be in the World Cup, when it is again faced with European competition. The US has not defeated a Euro foe in eight games (0-6-2) since taking a 1-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in a Dec. 18, 2021, friendly in Carson, Calif. As for World Cup matches against Euro competition, the US has compiled a 3-14-7 mark, with only one victory since 1950. The US actually won its first two World Cup games against European countries — Belgium (3-0) in 1930 and England (1-0) in 1950. Since then, the only World Cup win over a Euro foe was a 3-2 decision over Portugal in 2002, when the Bruce Arena-coached US squad made it to the quarterfinals. Related : Playing in the CONCACAF region limits options for national team competition. But there is no reason to lag behind in player development. Switzerland, too, was going young, and Johan Manzambi, 19, did not seem to have a problem making an impact in his international debut in a recent 4-2 win over Mexico. Before the Switzerland game, Pochettino said he wanted his players to fight 'like wolves or lions.' But it is difficult to impose yourself physically on a group as technical as the Swiss. The US seldom could get close enough to make a hard tackle, at least not until second-half stoppage time, when Patrick Agyemang and Johnny Cardoso were cautioned. What Pochettino might not have realized is the US lacks tactical and technical sophistication, weaknesses exposed when facing European foes. Top-level competitors would have been expected to recognize alignment flaws and adjusted to the advances on the wings of Manzambi and Dan Ndoye, who both scored goals. But it wasn't until the second half that the US began limiting Manzambi and Ndoye, only after Pochettino added an extra defender. Advertisement As for the attack, Pochettino has work to do. The US, like many teams, is committed to high-pressing, mostly for the sake of attempting to create offense. The problem is, if the press is not working, there is little to fall back on. And the better European opposition is not easily knocked off its game by pressing tactics. So, there is only so much Pochettino can do, besides getting his players to chase around with ferocity. It is up to the players to figure out how vary the pace of the game, what to capitalize on, when to improvise. Pulisic and friends should provide solutions, once they return to the fold. But will they be enough to make a difference in the World Cup? Supporters are going to have to spend the next year wondering. Frank Dell'Apa can be reached at

Victory young gun seals German Bundesliga switch
Melbourne Victory young gun Kasey Bos has sealed a transfer to German Bundesliga club Mainz 05, capping off his rapid rise. Bos, who received his first Socceroos call-up for games against Japan and Saudi Arabia, departs the Victory, who receive an undisclosed transfer fee, to sign with Mainz 05 on a four-year deal through to 2029. The 21-year-old left-back, younger brother of Socceroos and Westerlo defender Jordy, made just four appearances off the bench for the Victory in 2023-24 but exploded in the most recent A-League Men season. Welcome to Mainz 05, Kasey Bos! 🔴⚪The 21-year-old defender joins from Melbourne Victory FC and has signed a four-year deal with the 05ers until 2029 ✍️ — Mainz 05 English (@Mainz05en) June 13, 2025 Bos scored four goals and notched two assists as he made 26 appearances, starting 24, including the Victory's grand final defeat to Melbourne City. "I've loved every minute I've played at Melbourne Victory," Bos said. "The club has helped shape my development and build the foundations necessary to take this next step overseas." Bos's season earned him an Olyroos call-up before his first senior camp under former Victory boss Tony Popovic. He will now attempt to kick on at Mainz, who finished sixth in the Bundesliga last season. "For a player to progress from our academy to the A-League team, and now to a top-six Bundesliga club, is a testament to the belief and hard work of many, not least Kasey and his family," Victory football director John Didulica said. "We are incredibly proud to have been part of his journey so far, and have no doubt he will continue to achieve great things with 1. FSV Mainz 05." Earlier on Friday, City confirmed talented young striker Max Caputo had signed a three-year contract extension until the end of the 2027-28 campaign. Defender Callum Talbot meantime departed the champions after three seasons, while Perth have signed former City forward Arion Sulemani on a two-year deal.

Man United ready to rival Liverpool and Chelsea for forward
Manchester United are prepared to rival Liverpool and Chelsea in the race to sign Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike. Ekitike is in demand after a brilliant season in the Bundesliga, in which the 22-year-old scored 22 goals in all competitions and provided 12 assists. Advertisement His performances helped Frankfurt to Champions League qualification and earned Ekitike a place in the Bundesliga's Team of the Season. Chelsea held talks over a potential transfer before the Club World Cup deadline, while Liverpool are also interested in the Frenchman. Sky Germany claim that Manchester United have now entered the race and have 'expressed concrete interest' in signing Ekitike. Ruben Amorim wants to bring in a centre-forward, though a deal could hinge on funds recouped from sales. United have completed the £62.5m signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and are pushing to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford for a similar fee. Advertisement Sales will be required to fund significant further business, with suitors being sought for Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho. Frankfurt have placed an asking price of €100m (£85.1m) on Ekitike and are under no pressure to sell. The forward is contracted until 2029, while Frankfurt's qualification for the Champions League and €70m January sale of Omar Marmoush to Manchester City has strengthened their position. Amorim is targeting a forward as United look to bounce back from their worst season since 1974. The Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League table and scored just 44 goals. Only Everton and the three relegated teams scored fewer goals than United in 2024/25.
