Sri Lankan resort seeks to break gender barriers

After leaving school, Jeewanthi Adikari was determined to pursue her studies in accounting. But her life took a different path when she began a three-month training program in hospitality.
She has since worked in different hotels throughout a career spanning over two decades. Now 42, she is in charge of Sri Lanka's first resort fully operated and managed by women. It's an attempt to address gender disparities in a male-dominated tourism sector crucial for the country's economic recovery after a major crisis.
"This is a place where women can realise their potential. They will not be inside the shell. Instead, they will come out and try to perform better," said Adikari, who oversees the daily operations of Amba Yaalu, a resort located in Dambulla city that serves as a gateway to most of Sri Lanka's tourist attractions.
Most Sri Lankan women don't get a chance to work in the tourism industry, earn money and own a career. In a country where 52% of the 22 million people are women, they account for only about 10% of the 200,000-strong workforce in the hospitality sector.
Some 160 kilometers (100 miles) northeast of Colombo, the resort is nestled in a mango plantation and all work is managed by 75 women staff who garden, work in the kitchens, clean the facility, address the guests and provide security in the form of seven ex-military members. The resort's facilities also include training programs for women to develop their skills in different areas of hospitality.
The resort opened in January and has been seen as a move unlocking women's potential and driving the tourism economy in the debt-stricken nation.
The idea was conceived by seasoned hotelier Chandra Wickramasinghe, who said he was "inspired by the power of women," especially that of his mother who raised him and his seven siblings as a single parent.
"I knew what these ladies can do. I got the idea and put my team to work on it. We got a strong team to run it and it worked very well,' said Wickramasinghe, adding that the resort would enable women to thrive as leaders.
Social stigma, language barrier, work-life balance, lack of training facilities and low salaries have long kept the majority of Sri Lankan women away from the hospitality industry, especially those in the rural areas, said Suranga Silva, professor of tourism economics in the University of Colombo.
Much of this stems from a patriarchal structure and traditional gender roles deeply embedded in Sri Lanka's society, even though many women have made their mark in the country's politics and have held key positions in the government. The island nation's current prime minister, Harini Amarasuriya, is a woman.
"Tourism industry can't be isolated from women,' said Silva, adding that women's employment in Sri Lanka's tourism is very low compared to the global and regional levels.
Sri Lanka's tourism and hospitality sector contributed 2.3% to the country's economy in 2023 - down from 5% in 2018 - and the industry has traditionally been the country's third largest foreign exchange earner. But the shortage of skilled women and some of them leaving jobs after getting married have been challenges faced by the industry since the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings and the coronavirus pandemic.
Kaushalya Batagoda, the executive chef at the resort, said the industry faces a shortage of female professionals to serve in the kitchen and as a result, most staff recruited to the resort's kitchen were rookies still in training.
"But, the new generation has a passion for working in the kitchen," she said, adding that she gets a lot of applications from women.
The resort has been lauded by women's rights activists who have long been concerned about limited career choices for women in Sri Lanka.
Activist Sepali Kottegoda said such business enterprises can "open up more safe employment opportunities for women.'
Silva, the professor, said that "a dramatic change' is taking place as more young women are eager to join the industry, but suggested that the government and the sector must jointly provide training programs for women to improve their skills and employability.
At Amba Yaalu resort, some of these concerns are already being tackled.
"This is purely to empower women," Adikari said. "We invite women to come and join us, see whether they can perform better in the career, sharpen their capacities and skills and contribute to the industry.'

Yet, when it comes to coaching academies marrying the two, the sweet spot of success has been week, things came to a head when around 35 families and a few cricket coaches were left in the lurch when branches of Rohit Sharma's CricKingdom Academy at three Dubai schools, managed by local partners Grasport, shut a statement from CricKingdom has insisted it will restart and take a fresh guard, the incident is the latest in a pattern where academies or projects riding on big names such as MS Dhoni, Ravi Ashwin, Yuvraj Singh and even former UAE coach Robin Singh have failed to build an a report by Telecom Asia Sport, a local academy chief Sudhakar Shetty said: 'Parents are sometimes too gullible. The closures in Dubai came less than a year after the multinational chain CricKingdom ventured out with a Dubai-based company Grasport as partners. Within the first quarter alone, the signs were apparent with coaches going unpaid for months. A statement from CricKingdom is still maintaining that the operation will be revived in a new format, while submitting a detailed timeline to show how they tried to resolve the matter with Grasport, whose founder Suhas Pudota has admitted to the media that he miscalculated the costs and revenues, while offering yet another promise that he will return the dues. While parents will move their children – aspiring to be the next Rohit Sharma – on to other options, most of the coaches, certified by the world body International Cricket Council and who moved to Dubai for this job offer, are now left high and dry without being fully theory, these initiatives bridge the gap between talent-rich regions and professional coaching infrastructure. Matein Khalid Sri Lanka is one of the most fascinating and drop-dead gorgeous countries I have ever visited, the island once known as Serendip by ancient Umayyad Arab sailors/ruby merchants and Ceylon by the colonial Dutch and British who once ruled the island, an emerald tear drop in the Indian Ocean. I have a special bond with Sri Lanka because my late mother, an artist, used to spend her summers painting in the exquisite resort of Nuwara Eliya when I was a teenager in the early 80's before the ghastly 26-year civil war devastated this magic land. So I was thrilled when my friend Ruchir Desai, fund manager of Hong Kong's Asian Frontier Capital (AFC) tripled his weight in Sri Lanka from 5% to 14%. When I last met Ruchir for coffee at the Ritz DIFC terrace (oops, it should have been tea), he told me that he expected the Commercial Bank of Ceylon shares to rise 50% in the next 12-months. As an investor in bank stocks (note Citigroup, one of my fave New York money center banks in the past year, is now trading at 88.72, up 37% in the past year). I passed this invaluable financial intel Ruchir gifted me to the three Sri Lankan ladies I have adopted as my sisters. Thank you Sheila, Anola and Naufarah! It is so nice to hear good news from Sri Lanka as I was last there on the eve of its 2022 political crisis, rupee meltdown, petrol lines and IMF bailout. ADVERTISEMENT Sri Lankan equities are priced inexpensively at 8X earnings, down from 14X three years ago. As Ruchi puts it, the combination of cheap valuations, accelerating earnings growth and political stability after the election of Anura Kumara Dissanayake as President is a fantastic combination and a compelling argument to allocate money now to this exciting Asian frontier market. The IMF program is rock solid, the external debt restructuring is over and the central bank governor in Colombo, whom Ruchir regularly visits on his company calls to SL is one of the most respected monetary mandarins in Asia. After five difficult years, the growth cycle has finally begun in Sri Lanka with a stable GDP, rising EPS/margins, the proverbial sweet spot for equities outperformance. Colombo is on the eve of a historic valuation rerating and I do not intend to miss this frontier market Xanadu in 2025, thanks to Ruchir, my Asian frontier market sherpa. I can attest from personal experience that tourism, banking and logistics are quintessential growth industries in Sri Lanka. Strangely enough, I was a student of Raj Rajaratnam when he was a finance TA at Wharton two decades before he became a star technology hedge fund manager at Galleon and Sri Lanka's only billionaire in New York before his fall from grace in a sordid insider trading scandal. While I preferred to stay at the historic Galle Face Hotel, I was stunned by the number of young Indian and Chinese tourists who crowded the casinos in the five star steel and concrete hotel monstrosities on the Colombo seafront. Hopefully, the government's current focus on fiscal consolidation and reform momentum continues to deliver a multi-year bull market in Sri Lankan equities as the Field Marshal, Shaz Speed and Aurie have delivered in Pakistan since the exit of Imran Khan. Ruchir is also my jungle guide for Pakistan, Central Asia, Iraq and Vietnamese equities in addition to SL. I must rename my friend the bionic $6-Million Man LOL. My 2-paisa suggestions to the Colombo stock exchange. One, you need to do everything in your power to boost liquidity before I can seriously help you attract Gulf family office money or institutional capital to SL. Two, the emerging debt market's heavy hitters in New York do not take kindly to investing in the bonds of a country named the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka as it sounds eerily similar to Zohranomics LOL.
