James Brolin weighs in on Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni's legal drama with surprise remark

Daily Mail6 days ago
Barbra Streisand 's husband James Brolin vocalized his support for Justin Baldoni amid his heated legal feud with Blake Lively.
Six months after the Gossip Girl star, 37, accused her It Ends With Us co-star and director of sexual harassment and retaliation, which Baldoni, 41, vehemently denies, Brolin, 84, addressed the allegations against his former colleague.
'I don't understand what's going on right now, but I hope it works out,' the Marcus Welby, M.D. star told People of the pair's legal war.
Brolin developed a close friendship with Baldoni after directing him in the 2011 short film Royal Reunion.
'He asked so many questions, he was so helpful,' the actor said of his time on set with the Jane the Virgin star. 'But I didn't realize he was learning, because very soon after that, this guy's directing his own stuff.'
Brolin continued: 'I'm so proud of Justin Baldoni because God, he's written two wonderful books on being a man and being courteous and teaching boys not to fear their fears — and now he's directed three movies.'
Brolin went on to marvel over how Baldoni 'started off [his directing career] with one episode of Jane the Virgin' and has gone up to direct multiple pictures, in addition to becoming an author and doing 'TED talks to help people.'
Baldoni portayed Nicky in Brolin's short, a heart-warming film about a multi-generational family who sets sail to celebrate the parents' 40th Anniversary.
The Wayfarer Studios co-founder and Lively's lawsuit has divided Hollywood, with stars like Lively's Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel, coming to her defense.
Amber Heard, Amy Schumer,Shawn Levy, A Simple Favor director Paul Feig, Jenny Slate, Lively's brother-in-law, Bart Johnson and her sister Robyn Lively have also backed the mother-of-four as well during her ongoing legal saga.
Brolin's remark comes after Lively was granted the request to pick the location of her deposition by a judge on Monday.
According to Variety, after her lawyers argued that Baldoni's attorneys were trying to turn the proceeding into a media spectacle.
The wife of Ryan Reynolds is set to be deposed in New York on Thursday in her legal battle against Baldoni.
Baldoni's side requested for the deposition to be held at the Park Avenue offices of Meister Seelig & Fein, one of the firms handling his case.
However, Lively's team objected to the location in a motion last week, claiming they feared a media ambush and Lively being swarmed by paparazzi on her way in and out of the building.
Baldoni pushed back on her claim by accusing her of trying to use her 'celebrity status' to gain an upper hand in the proceedings.
Lively's team also raised concerns that Baldoni would invite social media influencers to be present at the deposition, which is intended to be confidential.
On Monday, Judge Lewis Liman approved for the deposition to be held at a different location, which has been redacted in the public version of the motion.
Lively's lawyers also asked for Baldoni's side to provide a list of everyone who will be attending.
Liman granted the request, with Baldoni's team instructed that they need to provide the list by noon on Tuesday.
The judge also instructed Lively's team to provide printing and copying facilities for Baldoni's lawyers.
In a moment of snark, Baldoni's attorney Bryan Freedman previously told TMZ that Lively's deposition should be live-streamed to an audience at Madison Square Garden.
Freedman's suggestion, which Lively's attorney shot down at the time as a publicity-seeking distraction, would be to sell tickets to the event and donate the proceeds to domestic violence victims.
Lively's team argued that Freedman's remarks demonstrated he couldn't be trusted to keep things professional if the deposition occurred at the place of his choosing.
Mitchell Schuster, one of Baldoni's lawyers, dismissed the concern as unfounded, adding that holding the deposition somewhere else would be inconvenient for his team.

The two sides are preparing to face off in court after they clashed while filming It Ends With Us last year.
After Lively claimed that Baldoni's side would try to make the deposition into a 'public spectacle', the filmmaker hit back by arguing, via his lawyer, that Blake has not supported her claim with evidence.
According to TMZ, Baldoni's defense team believes holding the deposition at Lively's lawyer's office puts them at a disadvantage.
Justin's lawyer cited the potential need to consult with his hundreds of pages of notes and to use a conference room to speak in private.
Baldoni's side wrote in the filing, 'Although Lively's foot-stomping and use of her celebrity status may have enabled her to seize control of the film, which is the crux of this dispute, her counsel's tantrum has no place in this Court. Lively is bound by the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure like every litigant.'
The parties have currently agreed to conduct the deposition on July 17, though recent legal filings indicate that the two sides have been in conflict over discovery requirements.
In emails between Lively and Baldoni's attorneys that were entered into the record, Lively's lawyers accused Baldoni's team of failing to mail hard drives of evidence to them in a timely manner, which would make it difficult for the Gossip Girl star and her team to examine any documents or videos the defendants may refer to when questioning her.
Her legal team also expressed concern in the new filings that Baldoni may hope to have her paraded in front of paparazzi and gawkers if the deposition is held in a less-private location.
In a statement to TMZ, Lively's representative said: 'Ms. Lively is looking forward to her deposition next week, and it should follow the same rules as every other witness in this case.

BREAKING NEWS Star Trek and Mission: Impossible star Tom Troupe dies aged 97: Hollywood in mourning as legendary actor passes away just five days after celebrating his birthday

Star Trek and Mission: Impossible star Tom Troupe has died aged 97, his family confirmed on Sunday. The actor passed away at his home in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California from natural causes on July 20 - just five days after his birthday. He is survived by his son Christopher Troupe, daughter-in-law Becky Coulter, granddaughter Ashley Troupe and several nieces and nephews. Troupe was married to Sixteen Candles actress Carole Cook from 1964 until her death from heart failure at the age of 98 in 2023. Instead of flowers, requests for donations have been made to either the Entertainment Community Fund or the Pasadena Humane Society. The actor was born on July 15, 1928, in North Kansas City, Missouri. He moved to New York in 1948, and studied at the Herbert Berghof Studio in Manhattan in the early 1950s, after he was given a scholarship from the late Reversal of Fortune actress-and-teacher, Uta Hagen. Troupe served in the Korean War - which was fought from 1950 until 1953 - and was awarded a Bronze Star for his service. Following the war, Tim returned to New York and made his Broadway debut as Peter van Daan in 1957's The Diary of Anne Frank, which also starred Joseph Schildkraut and Gusti Huber. The following year, Troupe moved to Los Angeles, California, where he landed dozens of top film and TV acting jobs during the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Some of his most notable acting credits included playing David Day in the Mission: Impossible TV series, as well as being cast as Lieutenant Matthew Harold in the Star Trek TV series, both in 1967. Troupe also appeared in The Fugitive, The Wild, Wild West, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, Cagney and Lacey, CHiPs, Knots Landing and Murder She Wrote. Further credits include Cheers, The Big Fisherman, The Devil's Brigade, Kelly's Heroes, Summer School and My Own Private Idaho. On stage, he co-starred alongside Carole - who along with Troupe was honoured with the 2002 Los Angeles Ovation Award for Career Achievement - in The Lion in Winter, Fathers Day and The Gin Game. He also co-wrote a one-actor play called The Diary of a Madman. Troupe also co-founded The Faculty, a Los Angeles-based acting school, alongside Charles Nelson Reilly, Lu Leonard, John Erman, and Dom DeLuise.

I met him once during a job interview and he stalked me relentlessly - now he's being released from prison and I'm terrified he'll kill me

A woman who was relentlessly stalked and harassed by a man she only met once during a job interview has opened up about the terrifying ordeal. Jen, a recruitment consultant from the UK, bravely shared her story in the first episode of To Catch A Stalker, the latest BBC Three documentary series hosted by former Love Island star Zara McDermott. The programme follows Zara, 28, as she meets with victims of stalking and domestic abuse to highlight the devastating and long-lasting impact of these crimes. Jen revealed that her nightmare began in March 2022 when she posted a job advert online. A man, who would later become her stalker, applied for the position and was offered the job following a brief interaction. What followed was a chilling campaign of harassment and sexual text messages leaving Jen in constant fear. She said: 'I started to get texts from him, [saying] "morning. I've just started my day. It's 5am. I'm heading here and I'm gonna be stopping there.' 'And then it started to be pictures as if he was texting his best friend. I didn't respond to them. And then, they started to get a little bit personal. 'Then the texts were coming through at eight, nine, ten o'clock at night, and I was not responding to anything. But then I'd get five or six more messages. And I was waking up to loads of messages in the middle of the night.' The man would attempt to insert himself into Jen's daily life by repeatedly sending her his location and urging her to meet him, behaving as though they were in a relationship, despite having met only once. His delusional fixation quickly escalated and he sent her nude pictures of himself, leaving Jen feeling trapped and constantly on edge. He soon began sending her whispering voice messages, which deeply unnerved her and added to her growing sense of fear. One voice note said: 'My love for you is in my brain it's not in my manhood. I am the guy you are looking for, you are just not recognising it. I want you so bad, really bad.' Describing these messages, Jen said: 'The whispering was so creepy. Like, it's scary. It was then I knew that he was making porn searches for people that looked like me. I was scared of him attacking me.' Just five days after his initial text to Jen, his tone shifted dramatically. He began sending her threatening voice messages, laced with fury and intimidation. One angry voice note said: 'A young capable guy who is in love with you and you threw me overboard, for who? Who are those people, none of them care for you.' Jen went to the police on numerous occasions, armed with a substantial amount of evidence documenting the harassment. The man was arrested four times and served three short prison sentences, but each time he was released, allowing the terrifying cycle to continue. He is currently in prison, where he has spent the last eight months, but is due for release in the next few weeks. Jen now lives in constant fear that the moment he is released, he will come straight to find her. She said he has shown no respect for legal boundaries in the past. 'It's when he's coming out, it's really, really stressful,' she said. 'On one of the occasions when he came out of prison, he rang me within two hours of being released. 'So, he came straight out of prison, went straight into a shop, bought a phone and rang me. 'And he was like, 'hi baby, it's me.' When he's coming out, he's going to get in the car and he's gonna come straight here. 'He wants to break me. He said that in his interviews to the police. So I'm broken. 'The only way it may end, is if it was him or me. So, it's either me that disappears or he disappears and he's not going anywhere.' Jen's sister, Sam, says she lives in constant fear for her sibling's safety. She admits she's terrified of what could happen when he's released in a few weeks. Sam said: 'If he's out and he's free to roam, it doesn't matter to him. 'The restraining orders, none of it means anything, it doesn't register. I do think that she's in massive danger. Massive amounts of danger.' Sam revealed that her sister is no longer eating or sleeping properly due to the constant fear she lives in. Although her doctor has prescribed anti-anxiety medication and sleeping pills, Jen is too afraid to take them, worried she needs to stay alert in case the man shows up at her door. Through tears, Sam said: 'I honestly think, without intervention, he'll kill her. He won't let her go. If he gets her, he will never let her go.' Jen's story is just one of many featured in the eye-opening series, which aims to raise awareness about stalking, as well as push for greater protections and support for victims. A 'heartbroken' Zara fought back tears when she heard the harrowing account of another woman's stalking ordeal at the hands of her ex-partner. The second episode sees Zara sit down with an anonymous woman who recounted how her ex-partner stalked her after she ended the relationship. She recalled how at the start he was 'very charming, caring, I didn't even imagine there was another side to him'. However, he would make her video call him '24 hours a day, every day, morning until night'. When the woman ended the relationship things took a terrifying turn. 'The continuous harassment, being outside of my house every other day, he would cry his eyes out and make me feel bad,' she recalled. Zara asked: 'Was he calling you and texting you?' 'He would call me more than 500 times a day and I would literally chuck my phone in some corner of my house,' the woman replied. She appeared to get emotional as she described how 'he made me hate myself for being in that situation'. The woman gestured a line across her neck with her hands as she recalled what he would do outside her house, seeming to infer he was saying he would harm her. 'He didn't leave outside of my house for another five, six hours. I was terrified,' she added. Zara replied: 'That breaks my heart, hearing that.' The woman submitted video, calls and text messages to the police and revealed she would be giving a witness statement at court against him. Zara asked the woman, 'How are you feeling through this?' 'Like I'm rubbish,' she replied, as Zara held her hand. The reality star looked tearful as she continued to listen to the woman and said: 'You did not deserve any of that, you know that?' After wrapping up filming for the stalking documentary in March, Zara admitted it had been one of her 'most emotional' yet, as she praised the brave women who appeared in the programme and voiced her hope that it would open up further conversations about the issue.
