Chandigarh: This summer, Chandigarh isn't just battling soaring temperatures — it's grappling with a full-blown infrastructure meltdown. From flickering lights to dry taps, the city's residents are enduring a season of sweltering chaos.
"It's not just the heat — it's the helplessness," said Hitesh Puri, chairman of Chandigarh Residents Associations Welfare Federation (CRAWFED). Unscheduled power cuts have turned homes into ovens, with voltage fluctuations wreaking havoc on appliances. "The excuses from the power company are flimsy as the wires they're supposed to maintain," he added, reflecting the growing public outrage.
But the power woes are just one side of the coin.
The water supply situation is equally grim. In areas like Manimajra and Sector 33, residents are receiving muddy, contaminated water—barely enough to reach the first floor of buildings. "This isn't just inconvenient—it's dangerous," warns Puri. "We're staring at a potential health crisis."
Sanjeev Chadha, president of Chandigarh Beopar Mandal, echoes the sentiment: "The city's commercial lifelines are being choked.

Reeling under the twin problems of power cuts and water supply issues, residents are demanding a comprehensive plan for the modernisation of city infrastructure—focusing on power lines, water pipelines, and digital monitoring systems.
Amid the ongoing heatwave, Chandigarh's power infrastructure is under severe stress, with electricity demand remaining unusually high—even during night hours.
This continuous overload is affecting, including underground cables and distribution transformers, beyond its limits, resulting in breakdowns across the city.
"For the past few days, we managed an exceptional peak in electricity demand ever recorded in the city. On June 12, demand was more than 400 MW in 51 slots during 00:00 to 00:30 hrs, 11:00 to 19:15 hrs, and 20:00 to 24:00 hrs. We successfully managed this load without many constraints, except for some underground cable faults due to overloading," said CPDL director Arun Kumar Verma.
A CPDL spokesperson said the company, in a phased manner, will add four power transformers with a capacity of 20 Mega Watt each. "Once fully operational, these power transformers will significantly enhance the reliability and continuity of electricity supply," said the spokesperson.

Kerala witnesses dip in number of candidates clearing NEET-UG
Kochi: There has been a decline in the number of students from Kerala clearing the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) this year compared to last year. After results were declared on Saturday, 73,328 candidates from the state successfully cleared the NEET-UG. This is a dip of over 13,000 candidates from last year's figures – 86,713. National Testing Agency (NTA) conducted the exam on May 4 which saw over 22 lakh candidates appear across 5,468 centres in 566 cities globally. Out of 1,27,442 candidates who registered from Kerala in 2025, 1,21,516 appeared for the exam. The test was conducted in 13 languages including Malayalam. However, the number of candidates opting to write in Malayalam declined significantly to just 481 this year compared to 958 students in the previous year. Despite the overall drop, Kerala still produced some standout performances. Deepniya DB, an OBC (NCL) candidate from the state, secured an all-India rank of 109 with a percentile of 99.9949. Air India plane crash: Aircraft's right side engine was overhauled in March
The right side engine of Air India's nearly 12-year-old aircraft that crashed soon after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport on June 12, was overhauled and installed in March 2025, PTI news agency reported on Saturday, citing unidentified airport officials. According to the officials, the left side engine was also inspected in April 2025 as per the engine manufacturer's protocol. Follow LIVE updates. Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner (AI 171) flight crashed into a medical hostel complex in Meghaninagar moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. According to the officials cited by PTI, the aircraft underwent comprehensive maintenance checks in June 2023 and was due for the next scheduled comprehensive checks in December this year. Earlier on Saturday, Air India said that following a directive from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) mandating enhanced safety checks, inspections on nine out of its 33 Dreamliner aircraft had been completed. "Air India is in the process of completing the one-time safety checks directed by the Indian aviation regulator, DGCA. These checks are being carried out on the Boeing 787 fleet as they return to India, before being cleared for their next operations. Air India has completed such checks on nine of the Boeing 787 aircraft and are on track to complete this process for the remaining 24 aircraft within the timeline provided by the regulator," Air India stated. Air India warned that some checks might lead to increased turnaround times and possible delays, particularly on long-haul routes to airports with operating curfews. The airline has it will provide an interim payment of ₹25 lakh to the families of the deceased and survivors of the Ahmedabad plane crash. This interim payment is in addition to the ₹1 crore compensation already announced by the parent company, Tata Sons.
