Telangana High Court orders magistrate to record woman's statement in habeas corpus case
Hyderabad: The Telangana high court has directed that a software professional's statement be recorded before a magistrate under section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code, in connection with a habeas corpus petition filed by a businessman from Suryapet.
The petitioner claimed the woman is his wife and is being unlawfully confined by her family.
The 30-year-old petitioner alleged that he and the woman had married and were living together in Hayathnagar, until she was allegedly taken away by her family members with the help of the police. He submitted photographs purportedly showing their wedding as evidence of their marital relationship.
In response, the state counsel submitted a statement from the 26-year-old woman, previously recorded by a woman police officer, in which she categorically denied having married the petitioner or intending to marry him.
She further revealed that her engagement to another man, scheduled for marriage on May 11, 2025, had been called off after the petitioner allegedly threatened her fiance and circulated her personal photographs in her village.
The state counsel also informed the court that the woman had severed ties with the petitioner nearly three years ago due to his alleged involvement in several criminal cases related to job fraud.

The harassment resumed recently, the court was told, after her fresh marriage was arranged.
A bench comprising Justices Pulla Karthik and Narsing Rao Nandikonda asked the petitioner for additional proof of the alleged marriage beyond the submitted photographs. When confronted with the woman's statement denying any marital relationship, the bench asked, 'What more do you want?'
The petitioner argued that the woman had not left him of her own volition and alleged that her earlier statement was coerced by the police. He urged the court to direct the authorities to produce her in person.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court ordered that the woman's statement be freshly recorded before a judicial magistrate to ensure procedural fairness. The case was adjourned to a later date for further proceedings.

Crimes by ‘outsiders' trigger protests in Uttarakhand, locals demand stringent checks
Dehradun: A series of violent crimes involving individuals from outside Uttarakhand — including the recent murder of a 25-year-old local man by a poclain machine operator — have led to widespread anger among residents and prompted authorities to tighten background checks. The incidents occurred over the past week in different parts of the state, including Dehradun and Pauri Garhwal. The poclain operator, accused of murdering the youth in Pauri Garhwal, remained absconding. In another case, Dehradun police on Saturday arrested three men from Haryana and Delhi for allegedly attacking a car belonging to a Dehradun-based merchant navy officer after his vehicle overtook theirs on a busy road on May 30. Meanwhile, seven men from Punjab were arrested for allegedly assaulting locals with swords in Srinagar, Pauri Garhwal, after being asked not to create a disturbance. Residents of Dehradun and surrounding areas blamed inadequate background checks for the rising violence. "What is happening in the past few days in the city and other parts of the state is completely unacceptable. We never have any problems with tourists visiting our state, but the kind of activities they are indulging in against the locals can never be tolerated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo There needs to be a crackdown on such behaviour and strict action is needed against them," said Umesh Dhyani, a resident of Dalanwala, Dehradun. Responding to the public outcry, inspector general of Garhwal range Rajeev Swaroop told TOI that all district police units in the division had been instructed to intensify verification drives and act firmly against the accused. "Acting to curb such incidents in the Garhwal division, police launched Operation Lagaam (control), an ongoing campaign, to check road rage and related violent incidents, which have also seen a rise recently. The state is known as Devbhoomi — abode of gods — and we will not allow anyone to disturb its peaceful environment," Swaroop said.

Temple, mosque encroachments cleared voluntarily for Sambhal road expansion project
Bareilly: A mosque and a temple built illegally along Bahjoi road near Azizpur Asadpur village in the Hayat Nagar police station area in Sambhal were voluntarily dismantled by members of both communities on Monday, a month after demolition notices were issued by the administration for a road widening project. Officials said this clearance was part of a wider anti-encroachment drive in the region, with support from the public works department (PWD). On one side of the road was an unregistered shrine and mosque, and directly opposite stood the Dharmkoop Temple, part of which also extended onto PWD land. In a show of civic cooperation, locals from both communities took down the structures themselves, assisted by bulldozers, under official supervision. Sambhal SDM Vandana Mishra and local police remained present throughout the operation to ensure security. "The shrine was given a notice by the PWD as it was obstructing the road, and people are now voluntarily removing the structure," Mishra said. A video of the voluntary demolition, shared widely on social media, showed members of both communities working side by side to remove the encroachments. An official involved in the drive said, "Road widening work is currently underway in Sambhal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Capital Gains Exemptions for Seniors SmartAsset Learn More Undo About a month ago, Mishra visited the stretch near Azizpur Asadpur village and inspected both structures. It was found that the mosque/shrine was built on PWD land, and the front part of the temple also fell within PWD jurisdiction. After a land survey confirmed the encroachments, notices were issued to both sides." On Monday, members of the Muslim community began removing the encroached shrine and mosque. Aqeel Ahmed, the caretaker, said, "This is the shrine of Yakub Ali Shah and technically it is within the limits of Azizpur village. The shrine is in the front and the mosque is behind it. Officials instructed us to dismantle it ourselves, as road construction would require the entire front portion to be removed. Measurements were already taken by officials, who also said that some part of the temple would be razed. " Members of the Hindu community also took down a section of the Dharmkoop Temple that was identified as an encroachment. Mahavir Prasad, the caretaker, said, "I have been associated with the temple for 40 years. A notice was served to us, so we are dismantling it ourselves. A small portion, including an overhang and some steps, falls within the encroachment. This is an ancient temple, and a five-day fair is held here during Maha Shivaratri. There's also an ancient banyan tree. However, the shrine and mosque opposite our temple are completely illegal, lacking any registration."
