Crimes by ‘outsiders' trigger protests in Uttarakhand, locals demand stringent checks

Time of India4 hours ago

Dehradun: A series of violent crimes involving individuals from outside Uttarakhand — including the recent murder of a 25-year-old local man by a poclain machine operator — have led to widespread anger among residents and prompted authorities to tighten background checks.
The incidents occurred over the past week in different parts of the state, including Dehradun and Pauri Garhwal.
The poclain operator, accused of murdering the youth in Pauri Garhwal, remained absconding. In another case, Dehradun police on Saturday arrested three men from Haryana and Delhi for allegedly attacking a car belonging to a Dehradun-based merchant navy officer after his vehicle overtook theirs on a busy road on May 30.
Meanwhile, seven men from Punjab were arrested for allegedly assaulting locals with swords in Srinagar, Pauri Garhwal, after being asked not to create a disturbance.
Residents of Dehradun and surrounding areas blamed inadequate background checks for the rising violence. "What is happening in the past few days in the city and other parts of the state is completely unacceptable. We never have any problems with tourists visiting our state, but the kind of activities they are indulging in against the locals can never be tolerated.

There needs to be a crackdown on such behaviour and strict action is needed against them," said Umesh Dhyani, a resident of Dalanwala, Dehradun.
Responding to the public outcry, inspector general of Garhwal range Rajeev Swaroop told TOI that all district police units in the division had been instructed to intensify verification drives and act firmly against the accused. "Acting to curb such incidents in the Garhwal division, police launched Operation Lagaam (control), an ongoing campaign, to check road rage and related violent incidents, which have also seen a rise recently.
The state is known as Devbhoomi — abode of gods — and we will not allow anyone to disturb its peaceful environment," Swaroop said.

Police urge citizens to use new anti-narcotics helpline

Jaipur: Rajasthan Police has urge citizens to actively use the Union govt's newly launched anti-narcotics helpline, MANAS-1933, aimed at curbing drug trafficking and supporting rehabilitation of those affected by drug addiction. The 24x7 helpline allows the public to confidentially share information related to narcotics smuggling, as well as seek counselling and guidance for individuals battling substance abuse. The initiative is part of the Union govt's "Zero Tolerance" policy towards drugs and is linked with anti-narcotics task forces (ANTFs) across India. According to officials, the helpline is a key component of the govt's broader vision of achieving a drug-free India by 2047. The identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential, ensuring both security and trust, they said. The directive for state-level implementation and mass awareness of the helpline comes from Mahendra Kumar Khinchi, joint secretary of the home department. All departments have been instructed to ensure widespread promotion of MANAS-1933, with efforts extending down to schools, colleges, and village councils. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Düsseldorf: GEERS sucht 700 Testhörer für Hörgeräte ohne Zuzahlung GEERS Undo To support this awareness drive, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has launched an official awareness portal — — offering posters, brochures, videos, and other materials that can be downloaded and shared with the public. Jaipur cops arrest ‘supplier' with smack worth Rs 1.6cr

Jaipur: Crime branch of Jaipur police Monday arrested a 39-year-old drug trafficker with 530 grams of smack worth Rs 1.6 crore in his possession. Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Kundan Kanwariya said the man was identified as Ram Rup Mali, a native of Sawai Madhopur district. A special police team monitored Mali's movements for some time before intercepting him near Kho Nagoriyan. Officials said he supplied drugs for the past few months to local distributors linked to larger trafficking syndicates. During questioning, Mali reportedly admitted that he sourced the contraband from a man named Sanu Khan, a resident of Aklera in Jhalawar district. He further disclosed that he supplied smack in Jaipur for the past 2–3 months and was working for prominent local traffickers, including Ashok alias Telia Sansi, Vicky Sansi, and Pintu Sansi. Police said Mali supplied the narcotics twice a month, and the payments were transferred to the Jhalawar-based suppliers through e-Mitra platforms to avoid detection. The funds generated from the illegal trade were used to support his personal lifestyle and hobbies, officials added. The crime branch is now tracing the broader network of traffickers operating between Jhalawar and Jaipur. "Efforts are underway to locate other suspects and identify other financial links used in the illegal drug trade. The accused was booked under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act, and further investigation is ongoing," Kanwariya said. Facial recognition along Amarnath route

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police have mounted facial recognition systems (FRS) along the Pahalgam route of Amarnath Yatra to fend off against any terror attacks against the pilgrims, an official said here on Monday. The system has a feature that alerts security forces in real time in case any blacklisted person comes into the frame of the surveillance cameras, the person said. Images of active terrorists and suspected overground workers have been fed into this system to ensure fool proof security for the Amarnath Yatra. "As soon as any of the blacklisted persons walks into the frame, a hooter will go off at the surveillance centre manned by security forces so that steps to eliminate the threat can be initiated in real time," the official, involved in the enterprise, said. The FRS identifies an individual by analysing facial features from digital photographs or videos and looking for a match in the database. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Container Houses Rwanda (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo
