In Saudi Arabia, the promising NEOM City project seems to be in trouble. On Friday, Semaphore reported that NEOM planned to lay off approximately 1,000 employees – 20% of its workforce – suggesting the Saudi government is downsizing its flagship giga project.
The relocations, anticipated to start later this year, would roll back former NEOM CEO Nadhmi Al-Nasr's policy of placing employees in an isolated construction site, three sources stated, as reported by Semafor. Employees who are transferred to the Capital will lose several benefits, such as housing and meals, extended to them at NEOM because of its remote location, resulting in a de facto pay cut.
Semaphore's report is part of a string of stories suggesting that Saudi officials are throttling their ambitions for NEOM, which was going to be a 'futuristic' development located along Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast with luxury hotels, ski hills, a 170 kilometre linear city called 'The Line,' and an industrial city. The name 'NEOM' stands for the Greek 'neos' (meaning 'new') and the Arabic word 'mustaqbal' (meaning 'future'), which stands for 'new future.' NEOM is part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 initiative. Project NEOM will cover 263,000 hectares and aims to diversify Saudi Arabia's economy away from oil dependency.

Darwin Nunez joins Saudi club Al Hilal from Liverpool

Liverpool's Uruguay forward Darwin Nunez has joined Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal from the Premier League champion on a three-year deal, both clubs said on Saturday. Financial details of the transfer were not revealed, but British media reported that the Saudis paid 53 million euros ($61.69 million) to the Anfield outfit for the 26-year-old. 'Al-Hilal Club Company is pleased to announce the signing of Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez from Liverpool FC on a three-year contract,' the Saudi club said on its website. 'Nunez has just joined the squad during the current pre-season training camp in Germany,' Al Hilal added. The striker found himself on the fringes of the first team during Liverpool's title-winning campaign last season, starting only eight league matches and netting five times. His departure will help finance Liverpool's close-season outlay of almost 300 million pounds so far. Inzaghi's new side is aiming to secure a record-extending 20th league title this season, having finished second in the Saudi Pro League last term. Its other high-profile signing of the transfer window was Theo Hernandez from AC Milan.

Newcastle United ends Alexander Isak's transfer drama, tells striker he's not going anywhere: Report

Days after turning down a £110 million bid from Premier League champions Liverpool, Newcastle United's Saudi owners have put their foot down and have insisted Alexander Isak will not be leaving St. James Park for now. read more Swedish striker Alexander Isak has three years left in his current contract with Newcastle United and is likely to negotiate a new deal with the club after the transfer window. Reuters The drama surrounding the transfer of Alexander Isak this summer has finally come to an end with Newcastle United telling the Swedish striker he's not going anywhere in the 2025-26 season, according to The Telegraph. The Newcastle board's verdict on the matter comes days after they rejected a £110 million bid from defending Premier League champions Liverpool for Isak, Isak, who had finished as the second-highest goal-scorer last season with 23 goals behind Liverpool's Mohamed Salah (29), had expressed his interest in joining Arne Slot's side, who had won their second title of the Premier League era last season and their 20th top-flight title overall. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The report adds that the 25-year-old isn't likely to take such a refusal from the club's Saudi owners too well, which only means that Isak will continue to remain sidelined from the rest of the squad until there's a truce between the player and the club. More from Football Isak has three years left on his Newcastle contract, and the report adds that the club is likely to negotiate a new deal with a release clause once the current transfer window comes to an end. Isak overlooked for Newcastle's home friendly against Espanyol Isak had recently skipped Newcastle's tour of Asia and instead opting to train at the facility of his former club Real Sociedad without Newcastle's permission. He since linked up with the rest of the Newcastle squad, but continues to train alone. And on Friday, the Sweden international was not included for the friendly against Espanyol at St James Park that ended in a 2-2 draw, highlighting the fact that he isn't likely to be included in Howe's plans for the season until he commits himself to the Magpies once again. 'We've had discussions and it's clear at the moment that we can't involve him with the group. I don't know how long that will be for, but that's the latest,' Howe said after the four-goal draw againt Espanyol. 'I'd want Alex to be playing today, I'd want him training tomorrow. We would love the player to be with us. Let me make that absolutely clear. There's no part of me that doesn't want that outcome, but I don't see the current situation changing for Aston Villa," the Newcastle boss added, referring to his team's season opener – against Aston Villa away from home. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The transfer window, meanwhile, closes on 1 September, giving Liverpool and other interested clubs nearly a month to sign Isak either by matching Newcastle's expected bid of £150 million ($201.74 million) – which would be a new British transfer record - or through some other means.

India, Oman free trade agreement likely to be announced soon: Official

The conclusion and signing of the proposed free trade agreement between India and Oman is expected to be announced soon, an official has said. The trade pact text is being translated into Arabic in Oman. After that, the cabinets of both countries will approve the agreement, according to the official. "Both countries have, in principle, decided to announce the conclusion and signing together," the official added. When asked if it would take two to three months, the official said: "Much less" than that. The talks for the agreement, officially termed the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), formally began in November 2023. In such agreements, two trading partners either significantly reduce or eliminate customs duties on a maximum number of goods traded between them. They also ease norms to promote trade in services and attract investments. Oman is the third-largest export destination among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries for India. India already has a similar agreement with another GCC member, the UAE, which came into effect in May 2022. The bilateral trade was over $10 billion (exports $4.06 billion and imports $6.55 billion) in 2024-25. India's key imports are petroleum products and urea. These account for over 70% of imports. Other major products are propylene and ethylene polymers, pet coke, gypsum, chemicals, and iron and steel.
