Could Taylor Swift Star in Beloved Whitney Houston Movie Remake?

Yahoo12-04-2025

A major movie remake of a beloved classic film could have interesting casting.
Although casting is not set, a key staffing move is getting Taylor Swift's name mentioned in connection with the project.
The movie is The Bodyguard, which was a romantic thriller that starred Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston in 1992. Costner played the bodyguard of Houston, a singer. The role would seem to be tailor-made for a singer like Swift.
"Beyond Swift, there are many singers who could play the singing star that this should be a magnet for an exciting cast," Deadline noted, however.
Now Sam Wrench, who is the director of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, has been chosen to direct a remake of The Bodyguard. The script is being written by Jonathan A. Abrams, who wrote the movie Juror No. 2, according to Deadline.
According to Deadline, the Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour movie that Wrench directed was a "concert movie spawned from Swift's historic almost two-year-long global tour." The movie "grossed $261.7 million worldwide," Deadline reported.
Variety noted that the original Bodyguard movie "has what is considered the bestselling movie soundtrack of all time, with several chart-topping original songs from Houston," who was at the height of her fame when she filmed it.
"I don't think the job of a concert filmmaker is there to try and portray something that didn't happen or to give it an energy that isn't there," Wrench told Variety.
"When the music is the king, the music is the thing you follow and you let that kind of dictate everything. But honestly, my job was fairly easy. It's such a great concert. Everyone enjoyed it. We pointed some cameras, and here we are," he added.
The original Bodyguard also received two Oscar nominations for songs, according to Variety.

Channel 4 Strategy Boss Exiting After Five Years

EXCLUSIVE: Channel 4 strategy chief Khalid Hayat is exiting after five years. The news was revealed yesterday in an all-staff email seen by Deadline from interim CEO Jonathan Allan, who also set out a temporary change in reporting structure as CEO Alex Mahon gets set to exit. Hayat will leave in September and succession plans will be announced in due course. More from Deadline Channel 4 Says It Doesn't Use NDAs, But Documents Reveal Company Is Curbing Free Speech Of Aggrieved Ex-Employees Ollie Madden Exiting Film4/Channel 4 To Join Netflix As Director Of UK Film; Farhana Bhula & Gwawr Lloyd Upped At UK Broadcaster Channel 4 Boss Alex Mahon Hits Back At "Excitable" Wayne Garvie's Criticism Of In-House Plan Allan said Hayat, Channel 4's Director of Strategy & Consumer Insight who has been with the broadcaster since 2020, is exiting 'to explore new challenges and I'd like to thank him for all the sterling work he has down for C4 through the many challenges that have presented themselves.' During his tenure, Hayat, who used to work for ITV, has been part of a nations and regions relocation, successful battle to avoid privatization, digital strategy and a Fast Forward plan. He told Deadline it had 'been a privilege to do my bit to contribute to Channel 4's digital transformation over recent years,' as he flagged successes like a 'refresh of strategic direction through Future4 and Fast Forward, navigating the complexities of the privatisation debate and securing a new licence that positions Channel 4 confidently for the next decade.' 'I'm confident Channel 4 is in a strong place to take on whatever comes next,' he added. 'When I do depart, I'll leave as a friend and admirer of Channel 4 – and I'm honoured to have spent five fantastic years here.' Interim CEO Allan is about to take over temporarily from the departing Mahon and he set out a reorganization of reporting lines 'on a temporary basis until a new CEO arrives' in his all-staffer, noting that he would 'just have too many direct reports to manage the business effectively' if things remained the same. Changes include Film4's Farhana Bhula and Director of Equity and Inclusion Marcia Williams reporting to Chief Commercial Affairs Officer Martin Baker, Chief Commercial Officer Rak Patel taking responsibility for 4Ventures and nations and regions boss Sinead Rocks taking on policy and public affairs. Allan said he will hold Q&A sessions in all Channel 4 offices over the next month. The news comes at a time of change for Channel 4, which has also lost chair Ian Cheshire and Film4/TV drama boss Ollie Madden. Jimmy Buffett's widow sues estate co-trustee over late singer's $275 million fortune

Jimmy Buffett's widow, Jane Buffett, is locked in a contentious legal battle over the late singer's $275 million estate. In a petition filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday, Jane, 46, asked the court to remove Richard Mozenter as co-trustee of her late husband's estate, claiming that he's acted 'openly hostile' towards her since Jimmy died in Sept. 2023 at age 76, according to Variety. 7 Jimmy and Jane Buffett at the 2022 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. Getty Images for Vanity Fair Jane accused Mozenter, an accountant at the business management firm Gelfand Rennert & Feldman, of mismanaging the trust and not acting in her best interests, including allegedly withholding financial information from the family. Mozenter, according to Jane, told her in February that the estate would pay her less than $2 million annually at a rate of return of less than one percent. She reportedly found this estimate 'shocking' since Mozenter allegedly acknowledged that Jimmy's Margaritaville company, in which the trust owns a roughly 20 percent stake, paid out $14 million over the past 18 months, according to Variety. 7 Jimmy Buffett performs in Gulf Shores, Alabama in July 2010. Jane also claimed that she asked Mozenter to resign as co-trustee on May 30, but he allegedly 'refused, insisting that he remain in a position of authority over her wealth.' 7 Jimmy and Jane Buffett at the 2023 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. Rich Polk According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mozenter filed his own petition in Florida state court seeking to remove Jane as co-trustee and personal representative of the estate. Mozenter, in his filing, allegedly claimed that Jimmy purposefully limited Jane's control of the trust because of concerns about her 'ability to manage and control his assets.' 7 Jimmy Buffett and Jane Buffett attend PiCNiC for ParentCorps party in New York in August 2005. This fact has made Jane very angry,' Mozenter's attorneys reportedly stated. 'As a result, Jane has repeatedly acted in a hostile manner toward Rick and has been completely uncooperative with Rick in his attempts to administer the trust.' Jane and Mozenter are now each seeking to axe the other from their role with the estate and appoint a new co-trustee. The Post has reached out to Mozenter for comment. 7 Jane and Jimmy Buffett attend the 17th Annual Rita Hayworth Alzheimer's Benefit Gala in October 2001. Jimmy and Jane were married for 46 years before the singer died of Merkel cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer, in Sept. 2023. The couple share three children: daughters Savannah, 46, and Delaney, 33, and son Cameron, 30.

Prime Video just added this underrated post-apocalyptic Tom Cruise sci-fi movie — and it's rocketed straight to No. 1

Tom Cruise isn't just entertaining moviegoers with "Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning" right now — one of his earlier projects is grabbing Prime Video subscribers' attention, too. Joseph Kosinski's glossy 2013 sci-fi movie "Oblivion" was one of many new movies added to the Amazon streaming service this month, and it's rocketed straight to the No. 1 spot on the platform. While the movie wasn't a critical darling, and Kosinski might now be better known for being behind the camera on "Top Gun: Maverick," this sci-fi effort (adapted from his own unpublished graphic novel) is a solid watch. If you'd spied "Oblivion" at the top of Prime Video's charts and were considering adding it to your watchlist, here's a little more info about the film, and a round-up of reactions to help you make your mind up. "Oblivion" whisks us forward in time to 2077 and introduces us to repairman Jack Harper (Tom Cruise), who is seeing out his last few working days on an abandoned planet Earth that was devastated after a war with aliens known as "Scavengers." He and his comms officer, Victoria, are due to relocate to a human colony very soon, though his world is turned upside down when he rescues a woman from a crashed spacecraft. This single act sets off a chain of events that embroils Jack in a desperate fight for the survival of humanity. In addition to Tom Cruise, "Oblivion" also stars Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Melissa Leo, and Zoë Bell. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Critically, "Oblivion" didn't perform amazingly well. It's "Rotten" on review aggregator site, Rotten Tomatoes, with a 53% critics rating and a consensus that reads: "visually striking but thinly scripted, "Oblivion" benefits from its strong production values and an excellent performance from Tom Cruise." Reviewing for Variety, Justin Chang called "Oblivion" a "striking, visually resplendent adventure" and a "moderately clever dystopian mindbender"... even if he found fault with the narrative as it plays out. Empire's Olly Richards similarly offered a 3/5 star review, writing, "Kosinski has again built a fantasy world that feels real to its core, but once more put most effort into the scenery and too little into the people." At Rolling Stone, however, critic Peter Travers offered a 2-star rating. Even though he highlights the score, the visuals and Cruise, Travers called the movie "a fantasy without an original thought in its sleek, empty head", concluding that "Oblivion" feels arid and antiseptic, untouched by human hands." In my eyes, though? "Oblivion" is an underrated Tom Cruise sci-fi watch. I wouldn't rank it as highly as I do Cruise's other sci-fi movie of the era, "Edge of Tomorrow," but I would nevertheless recommend giving "Oblivion" a chance. Critics are right to point out that its biggest wins are those high production values. The world of "Oblivion" is an impressively realized one that still holds up; the immersive soundtrack is worth celebrating, too. Cruise is on fine form in the action scenes when they come, and, even though the trailer famously makes the mistake of showing a little too much of the story, I think the intrigue and big storybeats that remain make "Oblivion" a compelling (if derivative) enough watch. In other words? Don't be put off by the mixed reception. Not sold on "Oblivion," or already seen it? We can still help you find your next watch.
