Outlander star returns to screens in major series announcement

A second season of ITV detective drama Karen Pirie is on the way, with Lauren Lyle in the leading role and ex-EastEnders actress Emer Kenny co-writing and starring Writer and actress Emer Kenny has hinted at the return of ITV's detective drama Karen Pirie, featuring Outlander's Lauren Lyle. The show, which debuted in 2022, adapts Val McDermid's Inspector Karen Pirie novels and stars Lauren as the lead character. ‌ With production credits from the teams behind Line of Duty and Bodyguard, the series portrays Lauren as a "young and fearless Scottish investigator with a quick mouth and a tenacious desire for the truth". ‌ In its inaugural season, viewers followed her character as she reopened the 25-year-old case of Rosie Duff, a barmaid who was attacked, stabbed, and left to die. A true crime podcast brings the cold case back into the limelight, with DS Karen Pirie spearheading the reinvestigation. As she delves into the past of three men who were once suspects but never prosecuted, she unravels a tangle of lies and secrets, navigating through complex motives to pinpoint the real killer. The show earned an impressive 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences praising it as "a classic British crime drama with a nice modern touch to it". Emer, formerly of EastEnders fame, who also contributes as a writer and actor on Karen Pirie, has provided an exciting update regarding the forthcoming series. ‌ "My show, Karen Pirie, season 2 of that is coming out this summer," she disclosed in a chat with RadioTimes, adding: "Which is really exciting, because it's been a while since we've finished shooting it. "So I'm just really pumped for it to be out in the world on ITV on Sunday nights." She tantalised fans with a hint: "This time it's about a kidnap of a billionaire heiress, so it's a little bit more epic, a little bit bigger, and I'm just really excited for people to see." ‌ Following a "really nice" response to the debut series, Emer shared her aspiration to deliver to her fans "something that is just as good". The forthcoming second season is set to draw on A Darker Domain, the second novel of McDermid's collection. It will consist of three episodes, each two hours long. ‌ Lauren opened up about the upcoming series, remarking: "I'm thrilled that we will continue the life of our fearless young detective Karen Pirie, and of course, her bumbag. I've known for a while how well the show has gone down behind the scenes, so it's been a joy to see audiences want more. "It's a creative honour to work alongside Emer Kenny with the backbone of Val McDermid's story. Season 1 was incredibly exciting, building an original character we hadn't seen before. I look forward to getting the gang back together and finally being able to answer the question: 'Please say there will be a season 2?' with an 'Oh yes.'" ITV has whetted the appetite for the next instalment, revealing: "In this second season, Karen reopens the investigation into the unsolved kidnap of a wealthy young heiress and her baby son back in 1985." Karen Pirie is available to watch on ITVX.

Kevin Costner Still Pining for Jewel After Rumored Romance: ‘She Has Other Priorities'

Kevin Costner and '90s folk-pop queen Jewel's rumored romance may have fizzled out a while ago, but he remains a huge admirer of her music, and he's looking forward to being front and center at her upcoming performances whilst quietly hoping it'll lead to more, Life & Style has exclusively learned. "Kevin's big miscalculation in his ongoing attempts to woo Jewel is his failing to understand that she isn't done yet, and she's certainly not in any frame of mind where she would want to be arm candy,' a source exclusively tells Life & Style. 'You talk to Jewel for five minutes and it becomes very clear that she still has a lot she wants to do with her music career and writing, and she still longs to win a Grammy after being nominated four times during her heyday.' The insider also makes it clear that the 'Who Will Save Your Soul' singer, 50, 'has other priorities ahead of finding a new romantic relationship.' 'For all of Kevin's lofty talk about his own musical ambitions, he is still not much more than an amateur while Jewel is undeniably a seasoned pro. It took a while for Kevin to really understand this, but he remains in awe of her talent and supportive of her career, even from a distance,' the source explains to Life & Style. 'He would have loved to collaborate with her and even date her, but he has to resign himself to being her number one fan instead, because she still has a lot of mountains she wants to climb herself!" Kevin, 70, and Jewel maintained a low-key romance after they sparked dating rumors in November 2023, seven months after the Yellowstone alum and ex-wife Christine Baumgartner separated. They finalized their divorce in February 2024. The pair met while participating in a pro-am tennis tournament at billionaire Richard Branson's Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands. 'Kevin looked handsome, tan and fit. All the guests were going crazy over him,' a source told In Touch in December 2023. 'He really hit it off with Jewel.' The insider told the outlet that the pair were seated next to each other at a dinner and were 'laughing and chatting' and 'looked like they were having a lot of fun.' Chatter about Jewel and Kevin's romance continued to make headlines in the following months, leading the musician to address the speculation during an April 2024 interview with Elle. 'He's a great person,' Jewel told the publication, who noted that she was 'blushing' while talking about the Bodyguard actor. 'The public fascination is intense for sure.' Later that month, In Touch reported that Jewel was a positive aspect in Kevin's life during his nasty divorce battle with Christine, 51. 'Jewel's been through divorce too [with ex-husband Ty Murray], though not in such a public way as Kevin. The media interest in her romance with Kevin isn't something she's used to, but she's handled it remarkably well,' the second insider told the outlet. 'She's not someone who caters to the spotlight. She can turn it off. Her focus is on keeping her life as normal as possible. She sees Kevin for the sensitive, caring soul he is.' Kevin, for his part, addressed the dating rumors during a candid interview with Howard Stern in June 2024, claiming their relationship was strictly platonic while still singing her praises. 'No, Jewel and I are friends. We've never gone out, ever,' he said at the time. 'She's special, and I don't want these rumors to ruin our friendship because that's what we have. She's special to me. She's beautiful enough to go out with.'

Scottish band reveal how Dolly Parton became the key to their success ahead of Glastonbury gig

'We really do have Dolly to thank for us being there at all." SAVED US FROM A 9-5 Scottish band reveal how Dolly Parton became the key to their success ahead of Glastonbury gig THE Bluebells will play Glastonbury for the first time this summer — and insist it's all down to Dolly Parton. Lead singer Bobby Bluebell — real name Robert Hodgens — and the McCluskey brothers will take to the festival's Acoustic Stage at the end of next month. Advertisement 5 The Bluebells thank Dolly Parton for their success However, Bobby reveals their incredible resurgence wouldn't have been possible if the country and western legend Dolly hadn't priced herself out of doing a TV car advert in the 90's. Her original version of I Will Always Love You was first choice to be used in a Volkswagen commercial. However, after Whitney Houston's cover from the Bodyguard movie topped charts around the world it was deemed too expensive to use. So the Scots indie band's 80s track Young At Heart was chosen instead - before giving the trio their first-ever No1 when the song topped the charts for four weeks in 1993. Advertisement Bobby explains: 'Clare Grogan's sister Kate was working at this advertising agency in London at the time. 'They had already made the Volkswagen advert with Dolly Parton singing her version of I Will Always Love You. 5 Dolly Parton attends Dolly Parton's Threads: My Songs In Symphony World Premiere 'But in 1992 it became this huge hit for Whitney Houston, so the money for the use of Dolly's song suddenly went through the roof. 'The agency was scrambling around as they were just about to launch and they needed a replacement and fast. Advertisement 'Kate then says, 'I think Young At Heart will fit the bill' as it had the same vibe as Dolly's song. "So because Dolly became too expensive and I had known Kate from school before her sister was in Altered Images, The Bluebells got their first No1.' Music icon Dolly Parton appears on The One Show and viewers can't believe her 'real age' Govan-born Bobby had written a piece about Ken and David McCluskey's teenage band for his music fanzine, then joined it in 1981. He recalls: 'I was finding groups to write about and at that time there were only about 10 bands in Glasgow — so they were going to get written about at some point. 'David was probably 14 at the time and I just thought he was an incredible drummer — he was like Keith Moon.' Advertisement But Bobby soon moved to London to live with girlfriend Siobhan Fahey from the trio Bananarama. He says: 'I had a duffle coat and NHS specs, but fortunately for me at that point the geeky look was coming in.' Together Bobby and Siobhan co-wrote Young At Heart as a Bananarama album track. But The Bluebells then reached the top 10 themselves with the track in 1984 before the band split two years later. 5 Dolly Parton attends "Dolly: An Original Musical" fireside chat and press conference at The Fisher Center for the Performing Arts Advertisement Bobby went on to be a club DJ, David worked a music tutor with additional-needs adults for charity SenseScotland, while Ken became a college lecturer. However, they were all thrown back together again when Dolly said no and Volkswagen called. Their longevity and continued popularity will now see their debut album Sisters re-released on June 27 — the day before they take to the Glasto stage. But it's not all been a bed of roses for the track that keeps them ticking. 5 Dolly Parton attends the opening of Country Music Hall of Fame (Photo by) Advertisement Session musician Bobby Valentino — who gave the jaunty violin performance on the track — sued for £100,000 worth of royalties in 2002 after only being paid £75 to play on the song. The US musician even gave a violin solo in court to help convince the judge to rule in his favour. Bobby recalls: 'I had a drink in the pub with Valentino afterwards and he said to me, 'I'm sorry Robert, I needed the money and was just chancing my arm really'.' The track has followed them all around the world, even when they played behind the Iron Curtain in the mid-80s. Dad-of-two Bobby says: 'We were travelling to East Berlin and stopped at a service station. Advertisement "Although you can hardly call it a service station. It had about one sandwich and bowls of gruel. 'Suddenly Young At Heart started playing over the sound system and even to this day I'm convinced that it was too much of a coincidence. 'What I actually think happened was that the Stasi were following us and they had put it on, just to remind us that we were being watched by the East German Secret Police.' 5 Bobby Bluebell shared how Dolly Parton helped the band He adds: 'I used to find it strange to hear it played at funerals. But I'm kind of getting used to that now. Advertisement 'I never thought of it as being a funeral song but yeah, I think it does fit quite well.' Dolly herself played the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury in 2014 and now The Bluebells will get to follow in her footsteps at Worthy Farm in Somerset. But for someone who is now more likely to be found in a golf clubhouse than in a nightclub, Bobby is just glad that their Glasto slot is an early one. The 65-year-old, who used to play golf with a 12 handicap, says: 'My favourite festival is actually Fringe by the Sea in North Berwick, because it's surrounded by all those lovely golf courses. 'I have been to Glastonbury before with Texas when they were on the main stage and they were brilliant. Advertisement 'But it's not the sort of thing I would normally do. Standing in a field for four days queuing for an autobank or the toilet isn't really my thing. "So I was delighted when I was told we would be on stage at half five. 'That means we can get out of there and be in a hotel by 10pm — perfect.' He adds: 'We really do have Dolly to thank for us being there at all. 'But life is full of all these little Sliding Doors moments that can take you to some incredible places.'

This director made the same film thrice in a year with 3 superstars, all big hits; yet never worked in Bollywood again

The trend of remaking one's own film in another language is not new. Priyadarshan made a career for himself in Hindi cinema by remaking his old Malayalam classics in Bollywood, and doing it quite successfully. Of late, Atlee has repackaged elements from his films in his Hindi debut, Jawan. But nobody did it quite as successfully as one man in the late 2010s. This maverick made the same film in three languages, with three different star casts, all in one year. And all of them were blockbusters. Yet, this was his final foray in Bollywood. Siddique Ismail, known in the film world as simply Siddique, started his film career as an assistant to Fazil in Malayalam cinema. He later teamed up with Lal, and the Siddique-Lal duo gave Mollywood many hits. But after their split in the 90s, Siddique began to direct films solo. In 2010, he directed Bodyguard, starring Dileep with Nayanthara and Mithra Kurian. The film was a roaring box office success, sparking calls for a remake in the Tamil and Telugu industries. Just months later, Siddique mounted the Tamil remake - Kaavalan. This starred Vijay, Asin, and Mithra Kurian (reprising her role from the Malayalam original). Kaavalan became Vijay's first film to gross ₹100 crore and was declared an industry hit. Not to be outdone, barely a year after the release of the original Bodyguard, Siddique went on the floors with the Hindi remake. Also titled Bodyguard, this film starred Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor, alongside Raj Babbar and Hazel Keech. The film earned ₹253 crore and was one of the highest-grossing Hindi films at the time of its release. After the success of the three Bodyguard films, Siddique went back to Malayalam cinema. Reportedly, he had offers from top Bollywood stars, who wanted to replicate the Bodyguard success. But Siddique had Malayalam cinema on his mind. In 2018, he made a Tamil film - Bhaskar Oru Rascal - again, a remake of his film. And in 2020, he directed his final film, Big Brother, starring Mohanlal and Arbaaz Khan. Siddique suffered from liver cirrhosis in his final days and died after a prolonged illness in July 202. He was only 55.
