VS Achuthanandan, former Kerala chief minister and veteran communist leader, died in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday. He was 101.
The former chief minister had withdrawn from public life after suffering a minor stroke in 2019, The Hindu reported. He had since been living with his son, V Arun Kumar, at his home in the state capital.
Achuthanandan was admitted to a hospital after a cardiac arrest in June, The Indian Express reported. He had been on a life support system since then.
The communist leader was born into a family of agricultural workers at Punnapra village in Alappuzha district in 1923. He lost his mother at the age of four and his father at 11.
At an early age, Achuthanandan developed an interest in politics and joined the Travancore State Congress, The Indian Express reported. He became a member of the undivided Communist Party of India after he turned 17.
In 1940, Achuthanandan joined a coir factory in Alappuzha and was urged by Communist leader Comrade P Krishna Pillai to bring the workers closer to the movement and ask them to fight for their rights.
The communist leader was also actively involved in a militant agitation against the colonial rule in 1946, which culminated in the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising, The Hindu reported.
In 1954, Achuthanandan became a member of the Communist Party of India state committee and was promoted to the state secretariat three years later.
However, Achuthanandan was one among the 32 leaders of the undivided Communist Party of India to walk out and form the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1964 after a prolonged inner-party struggle over political strategy.
In 1965, the communist leader started his legislative career during the Assembly elections, contesting from the Ambalapuzha seat, but did not win. He won from the same seat in 1967 and 1970.
Achuthanandan was also arrested for 21 months during the Emergency.
The communist leader was elected as state secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1980 and held the post for 12 years. He was the convener of the Left Democratic Front from 1996 to 2000.
He served as the chief minister of Kerala from 2006 to 2011.

Woman gang-raped in M.P., four held

A 19-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by four men in Madhya Pradesh's Sidhi district, police said on Wednesday (August 6, 2025). Police said the incident took place on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) afternoon when the woman and her friend visited a forested area under Churhat police station limits. The four accused have been arrested. Sidhi Superintendent of Police Ravindra Verma told The Hindu that finding the couple in a secluded area, the accused followed them. 'They thrashed the man and while he ran to seek help, the accused raped the woman,' Mr. Verma said, adding that the woman and her friend reported the incident at Semaria police station. Mr. Verma said five teams of 10 personnel each were formed to trace the accused. 'Three were nabbed overnight, while one man had been hiding atop a nearby hill. Our teams searched for him for 10 hours and caught him on Wednesday evening,' he said. An FIR has been filed under relevant provisions against the four accused, he added. Following the incident, State Congress president Jitu Patwari slammed the State's ruling BJP over the incident and said such incidents prove the 'failure of the government'. 'When will the horror of cases of Dalit, tribal, and women's oppression decrease? When will the government ensure their safety? In the past three years, 7,418 cases of rape of Dalit and tribal women, 558 murders, and 338 gang rapes have been recorded in Madhya Pradesh! The figures recorded in the government report itself reveal that on average, seven Dalit/tribal women are raped every day,' Mr. Patwari wrote on Twitter, while tagging Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who also heads the Home Department.

A.P. well-positioned to supply skilled workforce to global market, says German official

Germany is facing a major demographic challenge as an aging society, resulting in an urgent need for skilled workforce. On the other hand, India, with its youthful population and emphasis on education, holds a strategic demographic advantage, said Balasubramanian Ramani, Head of Talent Acquisition for Skilled Workforce in the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Government of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony), Germany. Speaking to The Hindu during his recent visit to Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC) to explore collaboration between Andhra Pradesh and Lower Saxony in skilling and employment, Mr. Ramani said a partnership between the two can be mutually beneficial. Mr. Ramani, who met Secretary (Skill Development and Education department) Kona Sasidhar and Advisor to the A.P. government for International Skilling Seeta Sharma said, with institutions such as ITIs, universities and vocational training centres, A.P. is well-positioned to train and supply skilled workers for global markets. The State's commitment to becoming a hub of renewable energy and quantum technologies further enhances its relevance, he said. He said that though the current focus was on the healthcare, partnership in renewable energy will also be explored actively, given that Lower Saxony leads Germany in renewable energy (offshore and onshore wind and solar). 'The idea is to attract, train and retain skilled professionals,' he said, adding that to take this forward, an invitation will be sent to A.P. government to send its delegation to Lower Saxony for a first-hand experience of its industries, training centres and political engagement. 'A concrete agreement should happen in six months,' he said. Technical sectors, metal industry and higher education and research segments will also be discussed in the days to come, he said. Language training As proficiency in German is crucial for workforce integration in Germany, he said A.P. government has expressed readiness to set up joint language academies, sending 15 trainers to Germany for language training and hosting German language interns from Germany to train local teachers. Referring to A.P.'s vision to become a quantum technology hub, Mr. Ramani said Lower Saxony has strong physics and quantum research universities and suggested cooperation in higher education mobility, research and student exchange. Speaking about broader economic cooperation, he said besides skilling, the collaboration can extend to investment and joint ventures, food processing (Lower Saxony is a major agricultural state) and ports and shipbuilding, suggesting links between Visakhapatnam and German ports.

UP suspends official after anti-encroachment order in Ballia mentions caste, religion

The Uttar Pradesh government suspended a Panchayati Raj Department official in Ballia district after an order issued by him mentioning the caste and religion of persons whose properties were to be demolished in an anti-encroachment drive triggered a row, The Indian Express reported on Tuesday. The order suspending Joint Director of Panchayati Raj SN Singh came on Monday night. The district administration also withdrew the order on the anti-encroachment drive dated August 2, which was issued by Singh, following criticism on social media and directives from Chief Minister Adityanath, the Hindustan Times reported. The August 2 order pertained to a drive to remove alleged encroachments from Gram Sabha land, ponds, playgrounds, cremation grounds and panchayat buildings. It specifically mentioned 'illegal occupation by people of a particular caste (Yadav) and a particular religion (Muslim)', The Indian Express reported. Adityanath said that the order was 'completely discriminatory and unacceptable', adding that it was a serious administrative lapse, the Hindustan Times reported. The Bharatiya Janata Party leader said that the language used in the directive was contrary to the state government's policies and created division in the society, which would not be tolerated. He added that action against encroachments should be taken with complete fairness, facts and law and not on the basis of caste or religion, the newspaper reported. The chief minister also warned officials not to allow such mistakes to be repeated, according to the Hindustan Times. In light of the development, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said that his party would move the court against the order. 'Action should be taken against anything that is illegal…so why are people of a particular caste or religion being targeted,' Yadav said in a social media post. 'The judiciary should take immediate notice, this is an anti-constitutional act.' — Akhilesh Yadav (@yadavakhilesh) August 5, 2025 Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai said the incident had shown the mindset of the state government and its officials. 'Orders based on caste or religion are not acceptable at any cost,' the Hindustan Times quoted Rai as saying. 'The officers who are hand in gloves with the BJP should be severely punished.'
