Basketball playoffs: Al-Ahly Benghazi takes a 2–0 lead

Libya Observer04-07-2025
Al-Ahly Benghazi has taken a commanding 2–0 lead over rivals Al-Ahly Tripoli in the opening matches of the Libyan Basketball Premier League finals.
Due to renovations at the Suleiman Al-Darrat Hall, the first two games of the playoffs were held at Al-Hilal Club's arena in Benghazi. Last season's runner-up, Al-Ahly Benghazi, clinched a nail-biting first win (82–80).
Defending champions and African title-holders Al-Ahly Tripoli struggled without their injured captain Mohamed Al-Saadi. The team also faced difficulties with the delayed chemistry between Americans McClough and Vital, coupled with underwhelming performances from Nassim Badrosh, Wagdi Omran, and Anis Al-Mansouri.
Al-Ahly Benghazi capitalized again in game 2, securing a more comfortable victory (80–68), widening the gap to two games in the best-of-five playoffs.
According to the finals, the next three games will move to the Tripoli Arena, starting Friday, with no audience. Coach Fouad Abou Chacra's Tripoli side will be hoping for a leave-it-all-on-the-court comeback to claim their ninth title. Meanwhile, fellow Lebanese coach Joe Ghattas will be aiming to seal the playoffs with a third consecutive win and deny the capital's team a chance for a fourth or decisive fifth game.
The championship follows a best-of-five format, with the first team to secure three victories crowned Libyan champions.

Al-Ahly Tripoli clinches derby win to top championship playoff group

Al-Ahly Tripoli has taken the lead in the Libyan Premier League's championship playoff group after a commanding 4-1 victory over city rivals Al-Ittihad in the derby clash of matchday three. The win puts Al-Ahly Tripoli at the top with 7 points, two ahead of closest challengers Al-Hilal and Al-Akhdar, who drew 2-2 in their fixture. The match started with high intensity as Algerian forward Ismail Belkasmi opened the scoring for Al-Ahly Tripoli in the second minute, assisted by standout performer Hamdou Elhouni. Al-Ittihad responded through Taher Bin Amer, who capitalized on a defensive error by Ayman Al-Tihar, leveling the score before halftime despite Ahli Tripoli's dominance. In the second half, Al-Ahly Tripoli turned their control into goals. Full-back Mohamed Al-Ajnaf restored the lead, followed by a strike from Moayad Al-Lafi—again set up by Elhouni. The fourth goal came via an own goal by Al-Ittihad midfielder Wissam Abu Zreida, who lobbed the ball over his own goalkeeper Muad Al-Lafi. The match also saw tensions flare and missed chances, including a missed penalty by Moroccan Noufel Zerhouni. In another fixture, Al-Ahly Benghazi kept their hopes of securing a continental spot alive with a 2-0 win over Al-Swehli—marking their first victory and lifting them to 3 points, while Al-Sweihli remains on one. The playoff action continues Wednesday with potentially decisive matchups in round four. Leaders Al-Ahly Tripoli face Al-Sweihli, while Al-Hilal meets Al-Ittihad, who are still aiming for a continental berth. Meanwhile, Al-Akhdar takes on Al-Ahly Benghazi in a key battle among the chasing pack. Tags: Libyan Football League

Libya win African minifootball title after shootout victory over Morocco

Libya secured their first-ever African Minifootball Championship title with a dramatic 3-2 penalty shootout victory over Morocco following a goalless draw in regulation and extra time. The final, held on Friday in the eastern city of Derna, marked a significant milestone for both Libyan sport and the host city, which is recovering from the devastating floods of 2023. Libyan players Mohannad Ito, Fadel Shleiq, and Jasem Al-Ghazali converted from the spot, sealing the win and sparking jubilant celebrations in the stands. The victory also sees Libya qualify for the upcoming Minifootball World Cup. Libya reached the final after defeating Guinea 2-0 in the semi-finals, while Morocco edged past Mauritania 4-3. The tournament featured 16 teams from across the continent and was hosted by Libya for the first time in several years. This triumph is being hailed as a symbol of resilience and renewal in Derna, and a testament to Libya's ability to host major sporting events amid ongoing national challenges.
