Bengaluru: 626 trees face axe for new jail in Devanahalli
This request comes amid rising public opposition to another controversial project by the Railway Land Development Authority, under the Ministry of Railways, which proposes cutting down 368 trees-prompting widespread citizen outrage.
In April 2025, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) invited public feedback on the jail project. Now, in accordance with the Karnataka Tree Preservation Act, 1976, the forest department has issued a public notice, dated May 31, 2025, giving citizens ten days to file objections regarding the proposed tree felling.
'We have asked the jail authorities to explore the option of translocating the trees,' said a senior forest department official, speaking on condition of anonymity. 'A new 153-acre tree park is being developed in Madapanahalli, Yelahanka, where an existing eucalyptus plantation is being cleared. We have adequate space there. Though translocation is expensive, we are urging all applicants seeking tree-felling permissions to consider it as a first option. Axing is easy, but conservation is now imperative.'

Vellore pregnant woman pushed from train case: Hemaraj gets rigorous life imprisonment
The District and Sessions Court on Monday convicted history-sheeter K. Hemaraj and sentenced him to undergo rigorous life imprisonment for pushing a pregnant woman off a moving train near Katpadi when she resisted a sexual assault attempt in February. Judge S. Meenakumari delivered the verdict, sentencing Hemaraj to undergo rigorous life imprisonment besides imposing a fine of ₹85,000. The Judge also directed the Ministry of Railways and the State government to pay a compensation of ₹50 lakh each to the survivor. The compensation should be deposited within a month. The court, in its ruling, also said that all future medical expenses of the survivor, if required, should be fully borne by the State government. 'A total of 22 witnesses, including the survivor were examined for the case. All charges filed against Hemaraj have been proved,' Public Prosecutor (PP) P.T. Saravanan told The Hindu. Police said that on February 6, a 36-year-old pregnant woman was pushed off a moving train near Katpadi in Vellore, when she resisted an attempt of Hemaraj, 27, to sexually assault her. He was arrested by the Government Railway Police (GRP), Jolarpet, in connection with the incident. The police said the woman, who was four months pregnant, had been living with her family in Tiruppur. Owing to her pregnancy, she was travelling to her mother's house and boarded the Coimbatore-Tirupati Intercity Express alone on the said day. The police said the accused person, Hemaraj, of Pooncholai near K.V. Kuppam in Vellore, boarded the ladies compartment of the train at Jolarpet. As she was alone in the compartment, he attempted to sexually assault her, she said. When she resisted his attempt, Hemaraj allegedly fractured her right hand and pushed her towards the entrance. Though she held onto the handle, she fell down after losing her grip and became unconscious. The police said the incident occurred at around 11.30 a.m. near the K.V. Kuppam station. A few railway workers rescued the woman, who was admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Vellore. The police said the accused was freed on conditional bail a few months ago in a case of murder of a 29-year-old woman from Chennai in April 2024. He is also facing another case, registered by the GRP, Jolarpet, in 2022 for pushing a woman commuter off a moving train after snatching her mobile phone. He was also charged under the Goondas Act twice.

Railways to install CCTV cameras in all passenger coaches, locomotives to enhance safety
In a move to check miscreants and ensure safety of passengers, the Ministry of Railways has decided to install CCTV cameras in all coaches. These high-end cameras, which will show clear footage even at the speed of 100 kmph and at low-light conditions, will be installed in the locomotives also. A senior official said that the decision was taken at a review meeting held by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday. To preserve the privacy of passengers, CCTV cameras will be installed in the common movement area near the doors. Currently, semi-high speed trains such as Vande Bharat, Tejas Express and superfast train Amrit Bharat Express have CCTV cameras. 'A trial run for the project was carried out in some coaches and locomotives in the Northern Railway. In the review meeting with the senior officials of the Railway Board, it was decided to install CCTV cameras in all 7,400 plus coaches and around 15,000 locomotives,' the official said. 'Each railway coach will have a total of four dome type CCTV cameras — two each at the entrance side. Each locomotive will be equipped with six CCTVs — one each at the front, rear, left and right side, all outside. Inside the loco, there will be one dome CCTV each at the front and rear side. The locomotives will also be equipped with the two desk mounted microphones,' the official explained. These cameras will be certified by the Standardization Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) directorate. 'These cameras will help the Railway staff to identify miscreants. Taking the issue of privacy of passengers into account, these cameras will be installed only at the entry gate of the coaches. In the meeting, it was also decided to explore the use of AI on the data captured by CCTV cameras, in collaboration with the IndiaAI mission,' said the official. Speaking to The Indian Express, a senior official of the Northern Railway said that the trial of the project was done in a few coaches by the Delhi division of the zone. 'The trial was successful in reducing the number of cameras from three (earlier provided in Research Designs & Standard Organisation (RDSO) specifications) to two on each end of the coach. The proposed location of two cameras helped to cover all the four doors in any AC coach on each end. The same was accepted by the Railway Board and approved for implementation,' he said. The official further said that CCTV cameras have been installed in 6,139 coaches in Northern Railway so far. These include 3,853 LHB coaches, 1,436 ICF coaches and 850 EMU/MEMU/DEMU coaches. 'Tenders for the installation in all the coaches were floated on July 11. Three workshops of the Northern Railway will be carrying out the task- Jagadhri for LHB coaches, Alambagh for ICF coaches and Charbagh for EMU/MEMU/DEMU coaches,' the official added. Only Aadhaar users can book Tatkal tickets on IRCTC site
New Delhi: The Ministry of Railways announced on Wednesday that with effect from July 1, Tatkal tickets booked through IRCTC's official website and mobile app will be available only to users authenticated with Aadhaar. Further, Aadhaar-based OTP authentication will become mandatory for Tatkal bookings made online starting July 15. Tatkal tickets booked at computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and through authorised agents will require OTP authentication sent to the mobile number provided by the user at the time of booking. This provision will also come into effect from July 15. To prevent bulk bookings during the critical opening period, authorised ticketing agents of Indian Railways will not be permitted to book opening-day Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window. For AC classes, this restriction applies from 10 a.m. to 10.30 a.m., and for non-AC classes, from 11 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. These changes are being implemented to improve transparency in Tatkal bookings and to ensure that the benefits of the scheme reach genuine end users, according to the official statement. The CRIS (Centre for Railway Information Services) and IRCTC have been instructed to make necessary system modifications and inform all Zonal Railways and departments concerned accordingly. The Ministry of Railways has urged all passengers to take note of these changes and asked everyone to ensure Aadhaar linkage with their IRCTC user profiles to avoid inconvenience. The steps are being implemented with an aim to ensure fair and transparent access to Tatkal tickets and to safeguard the interests of genuine passengers. The changes will enhance user authentication and reduce misuse of the scheme, the statement added. Indian Railways had cracked down on misuse of Tatkal bookings and identified and deactivated 2.5 crore fake IDs and flagged another 20 lakh for revalidation. Some of these accounts were found to be using disposable email addresses, which were being used to hoard tickets and sell them at inflated prices. IRCTC is utilising AI-driven tools to monitor and detect bot activity, which was being used by touts to book tickets in bulk and then make genuine travellers pay huge amounts for the tickets.
