Israeli strike hit four areas in notorious Tehran prison. Civilians among the dead.

The Israeli strike hit just before noon, a series of blasts that shook Tehran's Evin Prison, a sprawling complex that holds thousands of prisoners and has been a symbol of the Iranian regime's repression for more than four decades.
A former prisoner who happened to be near the complex June 23 when the rockets fell said he ran toward the explosions. As an inmate, he dreamed that he might one day see the prison gates come crashing down, but what he found that day was nightmarish, he told The Washington Post.

Golan leaders demand recognition in possible Syria peace talks

'While we welcome real peace efforts, we are very clear: any future agreement must recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan,' leaders in the Golan Heights noted in a press release. As reports emerge about Syria potentially entering the Abraham Accords, residents of the Golan are urging the government to strike a deal that emphasizes that the Golan Heights is part of Israeli territory. 'While we welcome real peace efforts, we are very clear: any future agreement must recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan,' Golan Regional Council Governor Ori Kallner and Katzrin Local Council head Yehuda Dua noted in a joint statement. The two noted that a potential deal 'must also keep Israel's security strong in the region and include clear rules to protect the safety of all Israelis.' The leaders of the Golan Heights called on the IDF and the government to 'keep a strong security presence in the Golan and its key locations to maintain peace and safety for Israel. 'The people of the Golan bravely faced thousands of rockets, attacks, and fires to protect Israel's border,' the statement added. 'We urge the Israeli government to remember this and act firmly and responsibly to ensure the safety of all Israelis." The joint statement comes as Israel and Syria hold discussions that could later lead to a peace agreement. However, sources told The Jerusalem Post that Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa's administration refused to allow Israel to strike within Syrian territory. Israel wishes to continue addressing security threats, especially if it withdraws from buffer zones on the border. The sources said that this has led to an impasse in the talks. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar said that 'Israel is interested in expanding the circle of the Abraham Accords' in a Monday statement and mentioned Syria as a potential addition. In line with what the Golan residents requested, Sa'ar affirmed that Israel would retain the Golan Heights as part of its territory. 'Israel applied its laws to the Golan Heights over 40 years ago, and in any peace agreement, the Golan will remain an inseparable part of the State of Israel.' 'At this stage, it will be less a peace agreement and more a security arrangement aimed at cooperating against civilian threats,' one of the sources told the Post.

IDF elite unit 504 interrogations lead to bust of Iranian terror cell operating in southern Syria

The elite IDF unit 504 provided intelligence that led to the arrests of multiple members of an Iranian terrorist cell in southern Syria. The IDF arrested members of an Iranian terrorist cell while operating in southern Syria following receiving special intelligence from interrogations of other Syrian operatives by the elite Unit 504, the military said on Wednesday. Intelligence that Unit 504 ('the IDF's Mossad') acquired during interrogations of operatives it captured in Syria opened up the ability to plan and execute the nighttime operations, which led to the arrests. In the past, before the Assad regime fell, the air force did kill Iranian operatives moving around in Syria as part of its often under-the-radar 'war between wars,' but it rarely was able to capture such Iranians, which would require more boots on the ground and for longer. During the operation announced Wednesday, the IDF also located weapons in the areas where the terrorists were arrested, including several firearms and grenades. One of the commanders in the field said they are 'working day and night to ensure that the residents of the Golan Heights can sleep in peace. 'We will not allow terrorist organizations or hostile elements to establish themselves in this area.' On June 11, Unit 504's interrogations of other operatives in Syria led to the arrest of Hamas terrorists in Beit Jinn in Syria. In January, the IDF released unusual footage that showed the interrogation of a Hamas terrorist by Unit 504 after he had been arrested at Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza. Anas Muhammad Faiz al-Sharif was captured during an operation by the IDF's 401st Brigade and Unit 504 near the hospital and transferred to Israel for questioning. During his interrogation, Sharif outlined his role within Hamas and revealed how it uses the hospital as a base for operations. He disclosed that hospital grounds were used to transport equipment and weapons for launching attacks against Israeli forces. Also, in January, the IDF announced that it was greatly expanding Unit 504's human and financial resources to take on a much larger role on the various Palestinian, Lebanese, and Syrian fronts. While Unit 504 was always operating in Lebanon and Syria, even in those countries, its footprint was smaller before the current war, given that those countries' borders were less porous. Further, for more than a decade until the current war, Unit 504 had exited Gaza, leaving it entirely to the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) to recruit human spies. However, immediately following October 7, 2023, Unit 504's Gaza Division was reestablished. Typically, the Shin Bet handles a small number of strategic-level interrogations, such as a long-term project to locate an enemy leader or major threat, whereas Unit 504 might handle lower-level interrogations to assist with real-time tactical operations. Yet, Unit 504's locating Iranians to arrest in Syria signals using them for even more strategic issues. Earlier this week, the IDF's 210th Division arrested several suspects in southern Syria. The division's forces were also deployed from the Mount Hermon area to the 'border triangle,' which refers to the borders of Israel, Syria, and Jordan. In May, the division uncovered combat equipment, including several rocket shells and landmines in southern Syria, the military said.

IDF arrests Quds Force-backed terror cell operating along Israel's borders

This marks the second time in the past week that the military arrested several Iranian operatives who posed a threat in the area. IDF special forces arrested a terror cell operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force in southern Syria, the military said on Monday. Following investigations by the IDF's Unit 504, soldiers from the Alexandroni Brigade, under the command of Division 210, completed a nighttime operation to arrest the terror cell operated by Iran's Quds Force in the Tel Kudna area in southern Syria, the IDF stated. This marks the second time in the past week that the military arrested several Iranian operatives who posed a threat in the area. The IDF's Unit 504 had also arrested Iranian terror cell members days earlier, also operating in southern Syria, following receiving special intelligence from the interrogations of other Syrian operatives. The operation last Wednesday also saw the IDF locating weapons in the areas where the terrorists were arrested, including several firearms and grenades. The Jerusalem Post disclosed in January that the unit, which is the military's human spying version of the Mossad, has been vital in unmasking Hamas's abuse of hospitals for a variety of terrorist and military purposes. Yonah Jeremy Bob contributed to this report.
