Ben Askren released from hospital, delivers tearful video message on ride home
Ben Askren is finally home.
An MMA and wrestling legend, Askren revealed he was released from the hospital Tuesday nearly two months after he entered due to a severe case of pneumonia. Askren underwent a double lung transplant four weeks ago.
"Day 59, I'm out with my beautiful wife supporter," Askren said. "Man, that was a long journey, and it's not over because I still can't really walk. I've got to reteach myself to do that, among many other things. I guess I can make light of it because it was me, and I don't really remember it. ... I don't remember 35 days of this journey. I think surgery was 24 or 25 days ago. It was hard. It was hard.
"I said this already in one of the videos, but the support you guys gave me, whether it was starting a GoFundMe, whether it was helping my kids and wife get through it, I had friends come from all over the country to hang out for a couple days. It meant so much. It was so great to just have all the support and all the love. Hopefully I'm not in this situation again for a really, really, really, really long time. I plan on living a while. Thank you guys again for all the positive comments online, everything. It means so much. Love you guys."
Askren, 40, recently revealed he died four times as he battled for his life. He lost 50 pounds in 45 days and was not aware for nearly half of that time. Askren said when he became conscious, he read through all of the supportive messages and felt as if he had attended his own funeral. He was on a ventilator prior to his transplant procedure.
It's still unclear how Askren ended up being hospitalized, though he and his wife Amy have indicated they might reveal more details as time progresses.
The news drew widespread reaction from the combat sports world, with numerous athletes, wrestlers, and the UFC publicly expressing thoughts and prayers for the former ONE and Bellator champion. The UFC's June 14 broadcast featured a segment wishing Askren well.
A T-shirt fundraiser has been launched to help with Askren's medical bills, as well as his mission to help support high-level athletes. After his win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. last month, Jake Paul used his post-fight interview time to express support for Askren and raise awareness about his life-changing situation.
Dana White was asked and confirmed that he donated $10,000 to Askren's GoFundMe.
Askren retired from MMA in 2019 but returned for a one-off boxing bout vs. Paul in 2021. Widely considered one of the greatest amateur wrestlers in U.S. history, Askren remains heavily involved with the wrestling community and recently joined Hulk Hogan's Real American Freestyle.

Burning Man Camp Needs Help To Bring Beloved Ski Slope Back in 2025
The state of Nevada is one of the most mountainous in the United States. With over 30 peaks topping over 10,000 feet in elevation, there are seemingly endless opportunities for backcountry skiing exploration. A group of passionate Burning Man festival-goers, however, brings simulated snow-sliding to the desert floor of Black Rock City each started in 2023 as a "learning experience" has become one of Burning Man's most unique camps. Dubbed 'Lake Lahontan Ski Resort' after Black Rock City's dry lakebed, the slope is made of mats that simulate the feeling of sliding on snow. At 14-feet tall and stretching 62-feet long, the Lake Lahontan Ski Resort is just large enough to capture the thrill of skiing and snowboarding, if you use your BRC Snow Club, which has hosted Lake Lahontan Ski Resort the last two Burning Man festivals, is making a return for 2025, but needs help from the community by way of fundraising. Keep reading for to keep up with the best stories and photos in skiing? Subscribe to the new Powder To The People newsletter for weekly updates. According to the GoFundMe created by BRC Snow Club organizer Dylan Hogan, The Lake Lahontan Ski Resort will be placed in a premiere zone called the 'Espalande' this year, which costs more. Storage and transportation of the dry slope costs $20,000 alone, according to the GoFundMe fundraiser has brought in over $2,500 at time of publishing this article, by BRC Snow Club is aiming for at least $10k. If $15k-$20k is raised, BRC Snow Club will add "après-ski energy to the slope" with a speaker system, dance floor, generator, and lighting fixtures."We're still more than willing to do the heavy lifting, but now we're turning to our community in hopes that the spirit of communal effort will help carry us through," writes Hogan for BRC Snow Club's Snow Club requested funds from the Burning Man Festival, but were denied as camps are ineligible for art grants. This came as a disappointment considering the festival used video clips from last year's Lake Lahontan Ski Resort to promote ticket sales for 2025."The Org posted a (very well-produced) video on their Instagram featuring interactivity at camps, which included footage of our slope," writes Hogan for the GoFundMe page. "Flattered and impressed by the quality of the video, we accepted. What we didn't realize (until the comments rolled in) was that the video was being used as an ADVERTISEMENT to sell tickets (did somebody say decommodification?) using our camp, our project, and our labor for THEIR profit... for an event we have to pay to attend and receive no compensation or support from." Burning Man 2025 will take place from August 24-September 1, 2025. Here's hoping BRC Snow Club raises enough funds to make Lake Lahontan Ski Resort happen of us here at POWDER are pulling for you!Burning Man Camp Needs Help To Bring Beloved Ski Slope Back in 2025 first appeared on Powder on Jul 28, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword

Impa Kasanganay candid about two-fight losing skid: 'I let myself get distracted'
Impa Kasanganay vows to get back to his winning ways. COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – Impa Kasanganay's PFL career has been very successful, but it has hit a rough patch in the last year. The UFC veteran joined the PFL roster through the promotion's challenger series, and went on to win five bouts in 2023 to claim that year's PFL tournament light heavyweight title and its $1 million prize. In 2024, Kasanganay (18-6) then lost a close split decision to Bellator champion Johnny Eblen in a champion vs. champion super fight, but went on to win three straight and reach another PFL tournament final. It was then that things took a turn. Kasanganay was stopped by Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov in the final of the 2024 tournament, and then again in the opening round of the 2025 PFL middleweight tournament this past April against Fabian Edwards. Kasanganay admits he let outside factors get to him in this two fight stretch, which has given him unfavorable results. "Man, I let myself get distracted," Kasanganay told MMA Junkie. "You can put your heart into things, and you can expect to turn out some way. I'm never a person who's scared to take a risk. I don't see what's the point of life if you're not taking risks. I'll take a risk like you want to build a business, and it does well, then build a gym, and it's great, then you have other things like motorcycles, and that's going really well. But you have to learn how to reevaluate who's around you, and you also have to evaluate what you're going to do next. "Sometimes what you see in a fighter it's a reflection where somebody's life is currently, but I also know too that I've been down before. I've lost two fights before. I've been knocked out in front of the whole world before, and I became a champion. I'll be champion again soon. You're a champion before you get the belt, and I'm grateful for everything that's happened: The loss to Fabian, the loss to (Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov) – two guys I definitely could've beat, too. I have looked at myself, talked to my team, looked who's around me, and I'm at the most peace and dialed in. ... Soon I'll have those titles again." Kasanganay returns to the PFL smart cage at 2025 PFL World Tournament 10: Finals on Aug. 21 at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. He takes on fellow UFC veteran Andre Sanchez. Kasanganay, who was originally scheduled to fight Mike Shipman, very much likes this new matchup. "Excellent opponent," Kasanganay said. "He's obviously been around for a while now. He's got heart, technique, skill, so my main focus is claiming this victory."

UFC exec says promotion won't cater headlining fights to specific regions
Don't expect the UFC to change its model for headlining matchups, regardless of the event's location. UFC executive Dave Shaw was asked after UFC on ABC 9, which took place at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, if the promotion would consider changing its booking style to have main events catered to the local audience. Shaw's response was blunt: "No, we're not." The UFC on ABC 9 main event saw New Zealand-born former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker take on Netherlands-born Reinier de Ridder. The fight turned out to be a thriller, but neither fighter had ties to the region. The same was true when the UFC's headliner for its first trip to Baku, Azerbaijan, featured two American light heavyweights, Jamahal Hill and Khalil Rountree Jr. It's a model that won't change, because for the UFC, putting on the best fight possible in the marquee spot is more important than catering to the local audience. The formula has been the standard for the promotion for quite some time. The main event fight will be the biggest available at the time, while the undercard often features talent with ties to the location of the event. "Listen, the way that Dana (White) puts together these fight cards, he's striving, he's accomplishing the best fights he can possibly make at that moment in time," Shaw said. "We also, when we come back to a location pretty frequently, from some of the conversations that we've had with our partners, with fans, with broadcast partners – yes, you get a lot of energy. "You get a lot of local hometown support for the regional guys, but local fans want to see the global stars, and why would anyone not want to see someone like Robert Whittaker, who's had such an extensive career?" With events in Abu Dhabi in the past, the promotion has succeeded in bringing main eventers that generate more local interest. Islam Makhachev and Umar Nurmagomedov have headlined events at Etihad Arena, while fighters like Magomed Ankalaev, Khamzat Chimaev and Shara Magomedov have competed on multiple undercards as well. The UFC returns to Etihad Arena on Oct. 25 for UFC 321, which features Tom Aspinall vs. Ciryl Gane for the undisputed heavyweight championship.
