Agent cops industry fury after rival exposes fake sales, reviews
Byrony O'Neill of Byrony O'Neill Estate Agents is at the centre of an online storm whipped up by a rival agent accusing her of posting false information about her competitors to win clients and gain search traffic.
But Ms O'Neill, who sells multi-million dollar properties in Brisbane's inner west, says the content was posted without her knowledge, and it has since been removed.

Brett Andreassen of Plum Property has posted a YouTube video and social media post claiming Ms O'Neill is providing disinformation to the public for personal gain in a move labelled as 'the scandal of the industry'.
'It was brought to our attention that a prominent agent in Toowong has been creating pages on their website about their competitors — not just me, complete with fake sales, fake reviews, fake testimonials,' Mr Andreassen says in the video.
'This is not about competition; this is about transparency. This is calling out blatant lies when an agent creates pages on their website with fake sales, fake reviews about their competitors to try and trick clients and customers... that agent has done the wrong thing by their clients and elevate their own reputation in the community — this needs to be called out.'

Mr Andreassen provided screenshots of information from what he claims were 18 pages containing fake sales, reviews, and testimonials on Byrony O'Neill's website.
The pages have since been removed from the website, but links to archives of each page are in the description of Mr Andreassen's video.
One testimonial states; ''Brett's negotiation skills and proactive communication made the process easy,' says one client. Another review notes, 'Great result, but Byrony O'Neill is highly recommended by many locals.''
'That's a strange quote from a client who used my services then said we're going to use someone else. I can look back through my career and say that's never happened,' Mr Andreassen said.

Under that testimonial are a number of addresses of properties purported to have been sold by Mr Andreassen, including 3/22 Jephson St, Toowong in April 2025.
'I didn't sell that property, particularly in April 2025. Then I looked it up. There is no 3/22 Jephson St, Toowong,' he said.
'Can you see what's happening here? Fake sales are being put under my name.'
He then noted similar fake testimonials and sales were listed for 18 other agents in the area also listed on Ms O'Neill's website, including identical 'complaints' sections and unverified quotes from clients who are quoted as promoting Byrony.
Each agent also has a small group of fake sales, either for properties that do not exist, are in different suburbs, are units instead of houses, were not sold, or were sold at a different time for a different price.
Mr Andreassen said he stumbled across the findings when he googled his name and the word 'reviews'.
The video is creating quite a stir in the real estate community.
One commented: 'Has she called you yet to say sorry? You know, picking up the phone. Maybe we should all call her today to let her know we aren't very happy with this conduct.'
Another says: 'Office of Fair Trading needs to hear about this.' And another: 'This is the scandal of the industry for sure!' 'This is disgusting! Good work uncovering this!!'
Alex Frew, the founder of 3P Digital, took to Mr Andreassen's Instagram post to respond to the allegations, claiming full responsibility in a comment.
'We're reaching out regarding recent concerns about inaccurate content that appeared on Byrony O'Neill's website. These pages were created and published by one of our team members at 3P Digital as part of a programmatic SEO initiative. Byrony had given us full autonomy to manage this process, and she was not consulted on or made aware of the specific suburb sales or complaint data that was included. She did not give permission for this content to be published.'
'Byrony only became aware of the issue after receiving a phone call from an agent who had seen a public post about it around 7 pm on 27 July. She notified us immediately, and by 3 am on 28 July, all pages in question had been taken down.
'We take full responsibility for this error. The data used in the SEO strategy was incorrect and its inclusion was a mistake. The staff member responsible is being managed internally, and we've since updated our internal checks to prevent this from happening again.'
Ms O'Neill has since released a statement apologising to those impacted.
'I unreservedly apologise to anyone this has impacted,' it states.
'I've been in real estate for more than 21 years, and this is not who I am or how my company operates.
'I engaged a third party to manage all my IT requirements, and this content was created without my knowledge or my approval. The IT company has confirmed this in their public statements.
'I was furious when I was informed, and the pages were taken down immediately.'
Mr Andreassen said he had been contacted by the Office of Fair Trading and had approached the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC), as well as informing other affected agents about the matter.
His concern is that the information on Ms O'Neill's website could dissuade clients from using one of the agents mentioned, which could constitute a loss of business for that agent. He also claims the incorrect sale prices listed could result in agents being accused of underselling.
Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) CEO Antonia Mercorella saidthe REIQ recommended agents lodge complaints to the industry regulator, the Office of Fair Trading, if they believed competitors were acting in a potentially unlawful manner.
'Real estate is an extremely competitive industry, particularly between businesses that specialise in the same practice or local areas,' Ms Mercorella said.
'Significant amounts of money, time and resources are invested in building a brand and reputation in the real estate industry, and many consumers do consider and place trust in reviews when selecting a real estate professional to act on their behalf.'
Ms Mercorella said there were strict laws governing real estate in Queensland, as well as federal consumer laws, and it was important real estate professionals were cautious when it came to their own promotional activities, reviews, and representations.
'We understand in this increasingly digital world, online marketing tactics such as search engine optimisation are vital in keeping ahead of the pack, and we support agents promoting their own achievements,' she said.
'In doing so, integrity and honesty must remain at the core of all professional conduct.'

CSIRO could be facing hundreds more job cuts this year, union warns
There are fears hundreds more Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) jobs could be axed this year, the union has warned. The Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) issued a statement on Thursday morning saying that Australia's national science agency was enduring its "biggest job cuts in a decade". Last year, 440 positions were slashed, and the CPSU said "approximately 200 contract jobs were left to expire, with hundreds more cuts expected to be made to research units later this year". The union said it had made a submission to the Economic Reform Roundtable, warning the nation's capacity for productivity and innovation was being "actively undermined". The union is calling for the federal government to intervene to prevent further proposed cuts. CSIRO Staff Association section secretary Susan Tonks said there was a "clear disconnect between the government's talk about boosting productivity and their failure to support the very institution that helps deliver it". "But deep job cuts at the CSIRO are directly undermining Australia's ability to innovate, compete and grow. And this will continue to be the case as long as this government sits on its hands while hundreds of staff at the CSIRO are shown the door with little to no explanation. "If this government is serious about productivity, it must step in, stop the cuts, and back our country's peak science institution." The CSIRO has been contacted for comment. Ms Tonks said concern among staff was high. "If you're looking at the May budget papers and the workshops … there's workshops coming up to assess what science will be done, and what research will continue in September," she said. "And looking at all the numbers and everything that's coming up, it's looking highly likely that there will be similar numbers [to last year's cuts] coming across the research portfolio. "There's still assessments to be done, but given what we've just come out of, the anxiety and the concern and anger from staff is high." She said it was "hard to say" which areas within the CSIRO would be targeted. "But I think everything's going to be looked at," she said. "Looking at recent conversations with staff in preparation for some of those that are going to go through, there's quotes like, 'We need to be simpler as an organisation, we need to exit some areas and do fewer things better.'" She said it was "unsettling" for staff who had already been through recent changes, and warned some might not remain at the CSIRO if uncertainty lingered. "It's worth noting, public investment in research and development is what delivers innovation, it increases productivity," Ms Tonks said. "The CSIRO's been behind some of the most important scientific innovations that we've had in Australia. "We need to make sure that we back it."

‘Fake seizure guy': Exposing decades-long Melbourne scammer
A Victorian man dubbed 'fake seizure guy' has gained notoriety for allegedly faking seizures in public to get strangers to sit on him. Dozens of locals have reported being lured into restraining him, as he pretends to convulse on the ground, only to abruptly recover and vanish moments later. The mysterious scammer, who has become somewhat of an urban legend both online and on Melbourne streets, seems to target men almost exclusively. Here, speaks to three people who claim they've fallen victim to his act. Last Monday, a man named David was walking through Princes Park in Melbourne when another man caught his eye then suddenly collapsed dramatically and began shaking. Moments later, David found himself doing something completely unexpected. He climbed on top of the man, pinned his arms behind his back as he flailed beneath him. 'At first, I thought he was having a seizure,' David tells 'He toppled over, shaking and saying, 'I need a hand'. I helped him down, and then he told me to roll him face down and hold his arms behind his back. He was really insistent, then suddenly he said, 'You need to get on top of me, Straddle me', and I did.' David, a full-grown man weighing around 85 kilos, was hesitant but trusted the man's request. 'I remember thinking, I don't know what's happening, but I'm trying to help someone in trouble.' After a few minutes of holding the man in this bizarre pose, David called over some schoolboys to help. Suddenly, the man stopped shaking, stood up, and walked off with his dog. 'It was wild,' says David. 'The whole thing was so strange.' After posting his story on TikTok, he gained 400,000 views and quickly realised this wasn't an isolated incident. Comments flooded the video from countless others who've had similar encounters – reportedly with the same man, who many have dubbed 'FSG'. One person even claimed they had an encounter with the man, believed to now be in his mid-40s, in 2003. After going down an internet rabbit hole, David discovered an entire subreddit, @fakeseizureguy, where witnesses post sightings and warnings. Eerily, one user even claimed to have seen the man in Princes Park that same morning David had the interaction with him there. In other comments, people report seeing fake seizure guy target multiple people in the same area, sometimes just minutes apart. Who is fake seizure guy? The stories all follow the same chilling script. FSG wanders into public places like parks, train stations, busy streets, and suddenly acts as if he's having a seizure. He then directs anyone willing to help him with uncanny specificity: lie him face down, pin his arms behind his back, and critically, sit on him and straddle him. According to reports, he almost always targets men, sometimes even refusing help from women. After two to four minutes, the 'seizure' ends abruptly, he stands up, collects himself, sometimes even shaking the hand of the person who helped him, and walks off as if nothing happened. Christian Hull, a popular comedian and content creator, says he also encountered the man in 2018. He had just come out of an exhibition near Queens Bridge and was standing outside on a busy street with friends. 'It was dark outside but very well lit,' Christian says. 'Out of nowhere, this gentleman appeared, and it looked like he was having a seizure. I thought, something's going on here, let's help him.' Initially, Christian tried to lie him on his side and put his jacket under his head, but the man apparently denied his efforts, instead giving Christian instructions about what to do. 'I thought it was strange he was talking while having a seizure, but I was of the opinion that he knew his body,' he says. 'So he said, 'Lie me face down, pin my hands behind my back'. I was sitting on him like a couch, but then he said, 'You need to straddle me … like a horse'.' Christian obliged, but as he began to feel uneasy about the position their bodies ended up in, the idea of calling an ambulance was floated among his friends. But after hearing this, the man asked that they not call an ambulance because he said he had 'just escaped from prison'. At this point, even more alarm bells sounded, so they contacted the police, and then the man stood up and 'bolted'. 'Later, we saw him doing the same thing 80 metres away,' Christian says. 'We yelled out to a group not to help him.' After sharing his experience online, including a photo of himself sitting on top of the man, he learnt that he had just become the latest target of fake seizure guy. Heath, another Melbourne man, said he also helped fake seizure guy while on a day out at Melbourne Zoo with his family. 'We had just parked, and I saw this man collapse onto another man. Leaving my wife and kids behind, I ran over to him. The man said, 'I have seizures all the time, can you help me restrain my arms?'' Heath recalls. 'I was basically holding him down like an arrest. I was a bit confused because his dogs just sat there, unbothered by the fact that their owner was seemingly having a seizure.' The man reportedly asked Heath to put some force into restraining him. 'He asked me to really pin him down,' he says. After a few minutes, he jumped to his feet, hugged Heath, and disappeared. For the Melbourne dad, the strangeness only sank in afterwards. 'I found out that my wife's cousin had a similar experience about 10 years ago,' he says. Why does he do this? His motives remain unclear. Some speculate that FSG might struggle with mental health issues. Others think he finds sexual gratification in being restrained beneath unsuspecting men. David says, 'At the time, I didn't think it was sexual, but looking back, having a near 90-kilo man sit on you like that. It makes you wonder'. Why hasn't he been stopped? Despite FSG's ongoing behaviour, many hesitate to report incidents to the police because of the confusing nature of his actions. Christian said he didn't file a report because, 'What can they really do, you know? I sat on a man'. However, when he did speak to the police on the night of the incident, he claims they said they were aware of the man. David also mentioned that he hadn't thought about reporting it until he shared the video and realised it was part of a wider issue. 'I wasn't traumatised by it, but I understand that it could affect others,' he says. Many also might not report because they walk away thinking they have done a good thing and helped someone. Is this what real seizures look like? A person having a seizure may display a variety of signs, including jerking movements, loss of consciousness, stiffening of the body, and confusion. There are specific types of seizures, such as simple partial seizures, where a person can sometimes speak during the event. According to the Epilepsy Foundation, if you see someone having a seizure with jerking movements, you shouldn't try to restrain them. You should also attempt to roll the person onto their side if possible. Manipulating people's good intentions Fake seizure guy has caused many who have seen his antics to rethink whether they would help a stranger again. 'People want to help, it's human nature. If someone has fallen over, I'll always go to help them. But if someone asked me to get on top of them again – there's no chance,' David says. 'It would definitely make me think twice'.

Labor looks to speed up PBS listings amid calls from lobby groups
Health Minister Mark Butler says he is looking at recommendations to speed up medicine approvals amid pressure from lobbyists both within Australia and in the US. Medicines Australia has repeatedly highlighted that Australia lags behind comparable countries in listing new medicines on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) – a list of federally subsidised medicines. It takes an average of 466 days from when the Therapeutic Goods Administration approves a medicine to when it becomes affordable on the PBS, according to the peak body. This is much longer than in the UK and Canada, for example. The lengthy timeline has also angered the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), which has framed the PBS as a 'non-tariff trade barrier' that harms American companies in representations to the Trump administration. Lengthy PBS listing times is among PhRMA's core criticisms. Mr Butler said on Thursday he would look at Medicines Australia's recommendations to make the 'approvals system quicker'. 'We're getting an enormous number of new medicining coming on to the market,' he told the ABC. 'We're living through a turbocharged period of discovery bringing more and more new medicine, so making sure that we can assess them and approve them very quickly to get them into patients as quickly as possible is something I've said is a real priority for us this term.' Because the PBS compels drugmakers to negotiate prices with the federal government, PhRMA has accused Australia of 'freeloading' on US-funded research and development. Meanwhile, American consumers pick up the bill, according to the lobby group. 'The medicines industry, understandably, given their interest, want to make prices higher as well, so there will be a bit of a debate about how we do that,' Mr Butler said. 'But I'm very much on the page of getting medicines more quickly into our system, our PBS system. 'It's a terrific system and we're trying to make medicines cheaper at the same time for Australians.' PhRMA has explicitly urged the Trump administration to 'leverage ongoing trade negotiations' to influence Australia's PBS policies. Mr Butler has echoed Anthony Albanese and fellow senior government ministers in ruling out any 'compromise' on the system as part of tariff talks. For the moment, Donald Trump's concern with the sector appears to be largely focused on bringing down prices in the US rather than punishing allies for having cheaper medicines. A RAND Corporation report found that Americans pay nearly four times more than Australians for medicines and about three times more than the average in other developed economies. The answer, according to the US President, is to make pharmaceuticals in the US. In a warning shot to firms, Mr Trump this week threatened to slap tariffs of up to 250 per cent on foreign-made products. With Australian pharma exports to the US worth more than $2bn in 2024, it would hit producers Down Under hard. Exports are mostly blood products and vaccines but also include packaged medicines and miscellaneous products, such as bandages. 'We'll be putting (an) initially small tariff on pharmaceuticals,' Mr Trump told US business news channel CNBC. 'In one year, 1½ years maximum, it's going to go to 150 per cent and then it's going to go to 250 per cent because we want pharmaceuticals made in our country.' He did not say what the initial rate would be, but earlier in the year he said duties on the sector would start from 25 per cent.
