Roessel free throw sends Fairport to sectional final in thriller

Yahoo04-03-2025

Jonathan Roessel took a deep breath, dribbled the ball twice and put up his second free throw. The ball landed squarely on the front rim, bounced off the backboard and went in.
That free throw with 1.9 seconds remaining gave (2)Fairport a come from behind 71-70 win over (3)Aquinas in the Class AAA semifinals at Gates Chili Monday night.
Roessel drew a foul driving on a fast break with the game tied at 70. His first free throw did not clear the front rim. The second one worked just fine.
The drama was an appropriate finish for an absolutely incredible game.
Aquinas led by nine at the half, but the Raiders closed the game behind LaShard Lowry, Jr. The 5-9 guard poured in 13 points in the third quarter and knocked down a trifecta of trifectas.
At the other end, the Irish were also being led by their shortest player. Christian McCullough was dazzling with no-look assists, step back jumpers and rushes to the basket that were nearly a blur. Aquinas held their lead through three quarters, but it was only 54-51.
Mackie Terry gave the Irish some breathing room with a crisp Eurostep down the baseline that gave AQ a six-point lead early in the 4th quarter. A few moments later, the Irish had a steal and were inches from an 8-point bulge, but missed a layup. Lowry immediately responded with a three. That's how the fourth quarter progressed. The Irish were poised multiple times to take full control only to have the Raiders knock down a shot that kept the deficit manageable.
Terry nailed back to back jumpers with three minutes to go. The second was a three-pointer that pushed Aquinas ahead by six. Fairport knocked down free throws on the next two possessions to close back within two. Derrion Battle and Landon Brunken exchanged layups and the Aquinas lead was 70-68 with a minute to play.
After a Fairport stop, Brunken was able to find space on the baseline for an easy layup with 20 seconds left that got the Red Raiders even for the first time in the second half. The next 15 seconds were near madness.
Aquinas tried to inbound to McCullough from midcourt, but throwing the ball over his head into the back court. Lowry got to the ball first and had a layup for the lead, but the ball rolled off. The ensuing Aquinas possession was frantic, but concluded with an open layup under the basket that also was no good.
Alexander Grejda grabbed the rebound with five seconds left and found Roessel at midcourt with a head of steam for what would turn out to be the game winner. Aquinas had a three-quarters court heave at the buzzer that was well short.
Brunken led the Raiders with 25 points while Lowry had 23. Fairport is off to the Big House and a date with their arch rivals from Rush-Henrietta. The top seeded Royal Comets held off a frisky (4)McQuaid team 65-57 in the first semifinal at Gates Chili Monday night. The Class AAA final will be Saturday night with tip time to be determined.
Fairport is now 19-3. Aquinas finished their season at 13-9.

Geno Smith Delivers Clear Maxx Crosby Statement at Raiders OTAs

Geno Smith Delivers Clear Maxx Crosby Statement at Raiders OTAs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Las Vegas Raiders have completely revamped their offense this year under new general manager John Spytek and head coach Pete Carroll. In March, the team sent a third-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for veteran quarterback Geno Smith. Advertisement Smith will be the starter under center instead of Aidan O'Connell or Gardner Minshew, who helped the team win just four games in 2024. He already has a rapport with coach Pete Carroll as well, considering the two spent four seasons together in Seattle. When Smith faced the Raiders in 2022, the Seahawks put up 34 points thanks to his 27-for-37 passing performance in which he racked up 328 yards and two touchdowns. He also got sacked three times, however, 1.5 of which came from star edge rusher Maxx Crosby. Las Vegas Raiders QB Geno Smith (7).Joe Nicholson-Imagn Images Last Thursday, Smith talked to the media after a Raiders OTA workout. He spoke glowingly about Crosby and what it means to be playing with him now instead of against him. Advertisement "Maxx is a great player, I got to know him a little bit more at the Pro Bowl a few years back," Smith said. "One of the hardest working guys I've ever seen. One of the guys who's more committed to football than anyone. He loves the game, you can tell he's passionate about it, and he's got a great leadership style. ... He's a special player, man. It's great to have him on my side." Crosby is coming off an underwhelming season, as he mustered only 7.5 sacks in an injury-riddled campaign. He missed five games during the 2024 NFL season as well, which marked the first time in his career that he has missed a contest. Still, he managed 17 tackles for loss and 20 quarterback hits, as well as 45 total tackles. With, hopefully, a healthy defensive line room surrounding him this year, Crosby should be able to take both his game and the Raiders' defense to new heights. This can only help Smith, who is looking to revitalize the Las Vegas offense as well after a brutal 2024 season in which they averaged just under 18.2 points per game. Raiders Veteran LB Praises North Carolina Coach Bill Belichick

Raiders Veteran LB Praises North Carolina Coach Bill Belichick originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Las Vegas Raiders have been largely praised this offseason for the decisions they made under new head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Spytek. However, they were not absolved of criticism, especially as it pertains to the linebacker room. Advertisement Spytek let veterans Robert Spillane and Divine Deablo leave in free agency without a contract, which was met with uncertainty from the fan base. However, defensive coordinator Patrick Graham has made a living by developing linebackers in recent years. Veteran Elandon Roberts, who the team signed to a one-year deal worth $3 million this offseason, is expected to be the Raiders' starting middle linebacker in 2025. Las Vegas Raiders LB Elandon Roberts (50).Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images Roberts has played nine NFL seasons, including four with the New England Patriots. There, he won two Super Bowls under head coach Bill Belichick and alongside Raiders minority owner Tom Brady. Advertisement On Tuesday, Roberts was a guest on "The Rush With Maxx Crosby," and was asked about how he thought his former coach would fair at North Carolina this season. He had nothing but positive things to say about Belichick ahead of his first year in the college ranks. "Man, believe it or not, I think he'll do straight,' Roberts said. 'Bill not like, an awkward guy as he was when he was coach of the New England Patriots. … He's very with the military background and stuff like that, very structured guy, … One thing I know he knows how to do is develop.' Through nine NFL seasons, Roberts has compiled 604 career tackles, including 54 for a loss, as well as 14.5 sacks and five forced fumbles. He also has an interception returned for a touchdown on his resume, which came in 2021 against Derek Carr and the Raiders. Advertisement Las Vegas will need a linebacker to step up alongside Roberts this season if the defense wants to reach its full potential. Veterans Devin White and Jaylon Smith are in the running, as well as seventh-round rookie Cody Lindenberg.
