I Bought a Home in the 4th Hottest U.S. Neighborhood—Here's What It's Like to Live There
You may not be familiar with Fairport, a scenic town in upstate New York dubbed the 'crown jewel of the Erie Canal.' It's not in Westchester or the Hudson Valley, and it's roughly 350 miles north of Manhattan. But those who know and love it, like me, weren't surprised when it was ranked the fourth hottest neighborhood in the United States, according to Redfin. I love it so much, I bought my first (and possibly forever) home in the heart of Fairport's village. I've called many neighborhoods home over the years—Lenox Hill on NYC's Upper East Side, Back Bay and Fenway in Boston, and Doral in Florida. And with each move, I learned what mattered most to me: Walkability and a sense of community were non-negotiable, leading me to rediscover a suburb I grew up only 20 minutes away from. Dock along the Erie Canal in a lot I miss about living in a major metro, of course. The access to entertainment, culture, and cuisine from around the world is unparalleled. But my happiest moments in these cities were also the simplest: playing with my dog at the park, catching up with friends on coffee walks, exploring flea markets. Why couldn't I replicate those same experiences in my new zip code? I envisioned pushing a stroller on the way to the local library, picnicking under the gazebo, and paddling a kayak along the canal. Now, those dreams are a reality—everything Fairport has to offer is just steps from my front door. Summer kicks off with Fairport Canal Days, one of the most popular arts festivals in New York state. The weekend celebration features local artisans, trendy food trucks, live performances, and a whimsical rubber duck charity race held on the Erie Canal. For a village of roughly 5,000, I'm amazed by the stacked lineup of annual events, which also includes the Fairport Music Festival and Oktoberfest. Beautiful landscape of the Fairport Lift Bridge over the Erie restaurants, and lively pubs line Main Street, making Fairport a destination for young families and singles. In search of a sweet treat? Three ice cream shops are a stone's throw from each other (Moonlight Creamery never misses). Thirsty? Hit up any number of wine bars, breweries, and distilleries, like Iron Smoke, a fan favorite for its award-winning bourbon. Planning a date night? Book a reservation at Bonnie & Clyde, an upscale restaurant and cocktail bar that opened earlier this year in a 1928 bank. Yes, you'll be eating and drinking your way through town, but staying active is also a part of the Fairport lifestyle. You can bike along the picturesque towpath, hit the pavement at the skatepark, or trek through miles of forests. Like every other millennial, I've considered picking up pickleball, and sure enough, Fairport is home to new state-of-the-art indoor courts. But for now, you'll find me walking everywhere—past the tour boats, trains, and historic village hall that makes me feel like I'm in an episode of Gilmore Girls . My ideal day in the village is spent shopping small. In addition to the weekly farmers market, Lombardi's Gourmet Foods and Red Bird Market are great for stocking up on specialty goods. Another Chapter Bookstore is to blame for my never-ending reading list. And I love perusing the quirky antiques and other one-of-a-kind items at boutiques like Main Street Mercantile and Diane Prince Furniture & Gifts. Need an assortment of colorful yarn? There's a shop for that. Looking for handmade soaps? There's a shop for that, too. Every season in Fairport has its own charm. The canalway becomes bustling in the summer months, and the lift bridge featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not makes for a great vantage point. In the fall, the community's eccentric scarecrow creations line the sidewalks. And during the holidays, festive lights are strung all over, including the trees and the gazebo, illuminating the freshly fallen snow. Above all, the people are the reason I chose to build a life here. It's as if there's an unspoken competition among residents to see who can say hello fastest. Even Jimmy Fallon, who frequents Fairport around St. Patrick's Day, has said 'I love the people here. It's super fun.' I couldn't agree more.

Penfield and HF-L punch tickets to Sectional Finals
Class A: (3)Penfield 10, (2)Fairport 7 Griffin Banister scored four times pacing Penfield to a semifinal win at Spencerport high school Friday night. The Patriots led this game start to finish. Jake Maurer added a hat trick for Penfield and Mason Schembri made 10 saves—many of which were spectacular. The Patriots jumped out to a 3-1 lead early. Robert Protz scored one of his three Fairport goals in the final three minutes of the half to close the Red Raiders within 4-3 after 24 minutes. Banninster and Maurer each scored goals in the first 68 seconds of the second half for the Patriots who eventually built an 8-4 lead. Protz answered again for Fairport and then the Raiders got a break when Penfield accidentally put a rebound into their own net with 1.8 seconds left in the quarter. The Penfield lead was down to 8-6. Schembri and the defense shut the door from there. The Raiders scored only once and were never again closer than two goals. Penfield opened the season with a five-game losing streak, but the Patriots are now 11-7. They will meet top-seeded McQuaid for the Class A title Tuesday evening at Hobart College with faceoff scheduled for 5pm. Fairport finished their season at 8-8. Class C: (2) Honeoye Falls-Lima Central 14, (3) Geneva 5 Only down by three, Geneva still had life at the start of the second half. That was until HF-L's Quinn Kailbourne opened the game up, scoring four of his six goals in the second half, leading all scorers on the night. Cash Arena for the Cougars added four goals of his own, including two in a 19-second span to end the second half. Grady Goodberlet had two of his own, followed by Jackson Coon and Marco Vengoechea with one each. Goodberlet and Coon were the key distributors of the game, with three assists each. In goal, Jason Bennett ended the night with 11 saves, only allowing one goal in the second half. On the opposite side, Ryland Dunham led the way for Geneva, with three goals, all coming in the first half. Ben Budgar added one goal and one assist for the Panthers. Jack Dunham and Dominick Verdora found their way into the box score as well. Durham assisted Budgar's first goal of the night, while Verdora scored Geneva's lone goal of the second half. HF-L will take on top-seeded Palmyra-Macedon, who come off a huge 21-10 victory over Wayne. The Class C title game is set for next Friday at Hobart College, with faceoff scheduled for 5pm. Roessel free throw sends Fairport to sectional final in thriller
Jonathan Roessel took a deep breath, dribbled the ball twice and put up his second free throw. The ball landed squarely on the front rim, bounced off the backboard and went in. That free throw with 1.9 seconds remaining gave (2)Fairport a come from behind 71-70 win over (3)Aquinas in the Class AAA semifinals at Gates Chili Monday night. Roessel drew a foul driving on a fast break with the game tied at 70. His first free throw did not clear the front rim. The second one worked just fine. The drama was an appropriate finish for an absolutely incredible game. Aquinas led by nine at the half, but the Raiders closed the game behind LaShard Lowry, Jr. The 5-9 guard poured in 13 points in the third quarter and knocked down a trifecta of trifectas. At the other end, the Irish were also being led by their shortest player. Christian McCullough was dazzling with no-look assists, step back jumpers and rushes to the basket that were nearly a blur. Aquinas held their lead through three quarters, but it was only 54-51. Mackie Terry gave the Irish some breathing room with a crisp Eurostep down the baseline that gave AQ a six-point lead early in the 4th quarter. A few moments later, the Irish had a steal and were inches from an 8-point bulge, but missed a layup. Lowry immediately responded with a three. That's how the fourth quarter progressed. The Irish were poised multiple times to take full control only to have the Raiders knock down a shot that kept the deficit manageable. Terry nailed back to back jumpers with three minutes to go. The second was a three-pointer that pushed Aquinas ahead by six. Fairport knocked down free throws on the next two possessions to close back within two. Derrion Battle and Landon Brunken exchanged layups and the Aquinas lead was 70-68 with a minute to play. After a Fairport stop, Brunken was able to find space on the baseline for an easy layup with 20 seconds left that got the Red Raiders even for the first time in the second half. The next 15 seconds were near madness. Aquinas tried to inbound to McCullough from midcourt, but throwing the ball over his head into the back court. Lowry got to the ball first and had a layup for the lead, but the ball rolled off. The ensuing Aquinas possession was frantic, but concluded with an open layup under the basket that also was no good. Alexander Grejda grabbed the rebound with five seconds left and found Roessel at midcourt with a head of steam for what would turn out to be the game winner. Aquinas had a three-quarters court heave at the buzzer that was well short. Brunken led the Raiders with 25 points while Lowry had 23. Fairport is off to the Big House and a date with their arch rivals from Rush-Henrietta. The top seeded Royal Comets held off a frisky (4)McQuaid team 65-57 in the first semifinal at Gates Chili Monday night. The Class AAA final will be Saturday night with tip time to be determined. Fairport is now 19-3. Aquinas finished their season at 13-9. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
