90% of Girls in UAE to Be Vaccinated Against HPV by 2030
The strategy also includes implementing routine cervical cancer screenings for women starting at age 25.
Apr 06, 2025
The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has launched a national strategy aimed at eliminating cervical cancer and reducing diseases linked to the human papillomavirus (HPV). A central objective of the initiative is to vaccinate 90% of girls against HPV before the age of 15 by the year 2030. The plan also calls for routine cervical cancer screenings for women beginning at age 25.
Cervical cancer remains the fifth most common cancer among women in the UAE. While national incidence rates are lower than the global average, MoHAP underscored the importance of early detection and prevention through a combined approach of vaccination and regular screening. The strategy aligns with broader national goals to enhance healthcare quality and raise overall life expectancy.
The UAE was the first country in the Eastern Mediterranean region to introduce the HPV vaccine into its national immunisation programme, beginning with girls aged 13 to 14 in 2018. In 2023, the programme was extended to include boys in the same age group, broadening community-level protection against the virus and its associated health risks.
The ministry's updated plan is part of a long-term public health framework aimed at reducing the burden of preventable cancers and strengthening immunisation coverage nationwide.

Health Ministry Eliminates Medical Paper Records
The announcement was made at a ceremony recognising Egypt as the first in the region to meet WHO's hepatitis B control target. Jun 04, 2025 The Ministry of Health and Population has announced the complete elimination of paper records across all health offices, marking a step in Egypt's healthcare digital transformation. Deputy Minister Dr. Amr Qandil confirmed that a unified digital system has been rolled out across health and vaccination offices nationwide, in order to improve service delivery and administrative efficiency. As part of the new system, parents receive automated SMS reminders 48 hours before scheduled vaccination appointments. The ministry currently operates around 5,300 vaccination points across the country, administering approximately 65 million doses annually. These include vaccinations for newborns, schoolchildren, healthcare workers, high-risk groups such as dialysis patients, and refugees. The announcement was made during a ceremony celebrating Egypt's achievement in hepatitis B control, where the country was recognised as the first in the Eastern Mediterranean region to meet the World Health Organization's target of reducing prevalence below 1% among children aged five and older. This digital shift is part of the broader national strategy to integrate technology into public health infrastructure and expand access to comprehensive healthcare services.

New Digital Platform to Aid Smokers in Early Lung Cancer Detection
The platform will focus on individuals aged 50 and older who are current or former smokers, as they represent the highest-risk group for developing lung cancer. Nov 08, 2024 The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) is set to launch a digital health assessment platform aimed at improving the early detection of lung cancer. The platform will focus on individuals aged 50 and older who are current or former smokers, as they represent the highest-risk group for developing lung cancer. The new initiative is aligned with the development of a national guide for early lung cancer detection, which MoHAP is creating in collaboration with the National Committee for the Prevention and Control of Cancer. The guide aims to support the national prevention of non-communicable diseases and ensure a sustainable, health-conscious population. In addition, MoHAP is working on implementing an AI-based detection system for lung cancer, which will integrate advanced algorithms to help identify early signs of the disease with greater accuracy. Medical staff will also be trained in international best practices, and innovative awareness programs will be introduced to educate high-risk groups. These efforts are supported by a strategic agreement between MoHAP and AstraZeneca, a global pharmaceutical company, coinciding with the global observance of Lung Cancer Awareness Month this November. As part of the campaign, a series of specialized workshops and community awareness events will be held in Dubai to educate the public on the importance of early detection and regular screenings. The events will feature expert talks and presentations focused on the latest detection methods and the benefits of timely intervention.
