Karnataka BJP demands CBI probe in stampede case
Karnataka Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka wrote a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday, urging that the case be handed over to the CBI.
Ashoka stated, "Our fight will not stop until justice is delivered to the families of the 11 innocent youths who lost their lives in the tragedy caused by the negligence of the Congress government during the IPL victory celebrations.
By projecting the police department as solely responsible for the tragedy, the government is attempting to evade its own accountability. I have written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, demanding that the case be handed over to the CBI to ensure justice for the victims' families."
In his letter, Ashoka noted, "Eleven people were killed and more than 56 injured during the RCB victory celebrations on June 4. The incident sparked nationwide discussion and has become a black mark in the sporting history of the state. There have been allegations and counter-allegations between the police and the state government regarding the incident."
"The media has reported that the stampede occurred due to the failure of the police department. However, the government has simply suspended a few police officers and remained silent. The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), while reviewing a petition by one of the suspended officers, opined that it was not appropriate to hold only the police responsible," he stated.
"It still remains unclear who is truly responsible for the tragedy, and the public also has the same question. Therefore, I urge you not to politicise this matter and to hand over the case to the CBI to ensure justice for the innocent lives lost," Ashoka demanded.

NEW DELHI: In an important judgment reinforcing the constitutional safeguards against custodial torture, the Supreme Court on Monday directed the CBI to register an FIR over the "brutal and inhuman custodial torture" of a police constable in Jammu and Kashmir and ordered the Union Territory administration to pay him Rs 50 lakh as compensation. "In order to provide some solace to the victim and his family for the barbaric acts of custodial torture leading to complete castration, we hereby direct the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir to pay compensation of Rs 50,00,000/- (Rupees Fifty Lakhs) to the appellant (victim), Khursheed Ahmed Chauhan. The said amount shall be recoverable from the officer(s) concerned, against whom departmental proceedings shall be initiated upon conclusion of the investigation by the CBI. The CBI shall submit its status report by November 10, 2025, to this court," said the apex court. "The injuries caused to the constable during his illegal detention, particularly the complete mutilation of his genitalia, the use of pepper/chilly powder, and electric shocks on his private parts, are grave reminders of the inhuman torture meted out to him. The cumulative effect of all these facts is deeply shocking to the conscience of this court," the two-judge bench of the top court, headed by Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta, observed.

Congress MP surrenders in 2007 case, gets bail
Ghaziabad: Congress MP from Saharanpur Imran Masood on Monday surrendered before a special CBI court in connection with a case involving fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 40 lakh. He was allowed interim bail till the next date of hearing on July 25. The case relates to the withdrawal of Rs 40 lakh from the account of Saharanpur Nagar Palika Parishad in 2007, when Masood was the chairman. On July 12, special CBI court had issued a non-bailable warrant for the arrest of the MP after he failed to appear despite repeated summons and warrants. Executive officer of the civic body Yashwant Singh had lodged an FIR against Masood and his aide, accusing them of withdrawing money from the municipal council's bank account. Sources said the matter was later registered under Prevention of Money Laundering Act. Special CBI judge Arwind Misra had issued the NBW directing police to arrest the accused by July 18. Paper leak: Eight former Western Railway employees awarded five years in jail, fined 5L
Ahmedabad: A special CBI court here on Monday sentenced eight former Western Railway employees to five years' imprisonment and imposed a Rs 5 lakh fine on each of them after finding them guilty of leaking the paper of an exam conducted by the railways in 2002. The court said that this case is a "glaring example of betrayal of public trust". Those punished are former head clerks Sunil Golani and Prakash Karamchandani, senior cipher operator Mahendra Vyas, signal maintainers Rajesh Goswami and Anand Meraiya, assistant diesel drivers Mehboobali Ansari and Paresh Patel and railway protection force personnel Pappu Khan. The CBI filed a case against them based on a complaint made by the chief vigilance inspector on Aug 17, 2002. They were charged with criminal conspiracy, theft, causing the disappearance of evidence and dishonestly receiving or retaining stolen property after they leaked and sold question papers for the exam to be held on Aug 18, 2002, for the post of probationary assistant station master.
