Value-hungry Aussies will benefit from even more auto brands, says BYD

Australia is already home to more automotive brands than any other country, making it one of the world's most competitive auto markets as well as one of the smallest, but Chinese giant BYD says value-focused local consumers will benefit from even more of them as brand loyalty disappears amid the cost of living crisis.
'Australia has the most brands available in any market, but I think what we're seeing is a shift in understanding as well,' BYD Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Kate Hornstein told CarExpert.
'The walls are coming down to new brands. I think brand loyalty is somewhat disappearing, and I think Australians are very driven, especially in today's climate, by value and what their own personal family needs.

'By being able to give them choice and more options, it's only going to be better for the customer.'
BYD launched in Australia in 2022 and has since announced it will bring its Denza luxury brand – which will play a similar role for BYD as Lexus does for Toyota – to showrooms before the end of 2025.
While it hasn't announced any others, BYD also has its Yangwang and Fangchengbao brands in China, and models from each are on the cards for Australia – although they will likely be sold as BYD or Denza models.
Other Chinese automakers have also brought several brands to Australia, including Chery which recently launched its Omoda Jaecoo brand and potentially has more to come.
The first Geely -badged model – the EX5 mid-size electric SUV – went on sale here in March 2025, adding to other Geely owned or controlled brand already present locally including Volvo, Polestar, Smart and Zeekr.
While many more are coming here, Australia currently has about 70 auto brands, despite the exit of several in relatively recent years including Holden, Daewoo, Daihatsu, Dodge, Chrysler, Citroen, Opel and Alpine, which will make a comeback in 2026 with the Alpine A390 hatch.
In the space of less than five years, Australia will have added about a dozen new Chinese brands, providing more choice for consumers than ever, but also forcing each automaker to fight over a relatively small sales pie – 1.2 million total sales across all brands in 2024.
That compares to roughly 30 million new vehicle sales annually in China, 16 million in the US, 2.8 million in Germany and 1.95 million in the UK.
Chinese automaker MG became a top-10 selling brand for the first time Down Under in July 2021. It's now firmly entrenched here and will launch its IM Motors premium electric brand here later this year.
IM Motors is to MG what Denza is to BYD, which previously stated plans to eclipse local market leader Toyota by 2027. Ms Hornstein says Denza will be another alternative to luxury marques primarily from Germany.
'When we look at Denza, the [luxury car] segment is largely populated by European brands and I think when we look at cost of ownership, initial outlay, cost of extended ownership, it's incredibly expensive for Australians just given where we are geographically,' she said.
'So I think what this provides is another option for customers to explore when they are in the market for a car.'

A mandate to work from the office is unlikely to fix a 'bigger problem' of employees who won't do their jobs without a manager 'hovering over them', HP Australia director Brad Pulford has told NewsWire. Amazon, Dell and Tabcorp have ordered workers into the office five days a week. Coles has tightened the reins on its administrative staff, with one day in-person minimums becoming a three-day mandate this year. Woolworths office staff need to show up three days a week too. Commonwealth Bank and ANZ staff need to rock up for half of all working days per month. At National Australia Bank, the rank and file need to show face three times a week, and managers only get one day at home per week. On paper, the NSW public service is the biggest employer in the country. Public servants in that state were sent a memo last year saying they would 'principally' need to be in the office, but different agencies are mandating different rules. The availability of actual desks is cited online by workers as a tangible factor at each agency. NewsWire / Andrew Henshaw Credit: News Corp Australia Mr Pulford points to HP's own analysis, which shows 73 per cent of people think it's important that staff are empowered to work in the way that best suits their personal needs and maximises their effectiveness. However, Australian workers do not think they are entitled to flexible working arrangements, the HP analysis shows. Among Australian 'knowledge workers', 92 per cent would take a pay cut to work where and when they want, or for a better work-life balance. 'There are real and persistent concerns over team collaboration, organisational culture and performance management,' Mr Pulford said. 'Some professions require in-person creativity. Others have a physical component that can't be replicated. But these problems can be managed. 'The businesses that are going against the grain usually cite productivity as their main justification. But if your employees won't do their job without a manager hovering over them, arguably you have a bigger problem,' he said. HP employs 435 people in Australia and New Zealand. Mr Pulford said flexible working arrangements were 'not a free-for-all' at the tech firm, but an issue to be managed 'carefully and thoughtfully'. 'Our employees are at times required to connect in person at our HP sites to further business goals.' The Australian job market had clearly adapted with one-third of people working remotely at least some of the time, he said. 'We think the entire conversation around hybrid work needs to shift. If the debate hasn't been decided entirely, we think those in favour of hybrid work definitely have the upper hand at this point.' 'We should spend less time arguing about whether it's acceptable and more time thinking about how we can use it to drive growth by creating better workplaces,' Mr Pulford said.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Amazon's $20b AI spend in Australia will help seize tech future

Anthony Albanese has said a new $20 billion Amazon deal will help Australia embrace AI, enhance national resilience and drive job creation. The artificial intelligence and data centre agreement was announced by the US tech giant's chief Matt Garman alongside the Prime Minister during his visit to Seattle on Sunday. It will expand Australia's network of data centres to boost AI capabilities and cloud technology. As it stands Amazon Web Services operates three data centre zones across Melbourne and Sydney. Mr Albanese said it would help drive productivity by allowing existing businesses to adopt or accelerate new technology use and give startups confidence to commercialise their ideas. The $20 billion investment over five years by AWS, builds on the $9.1 billion they have injected into Australia since 2012 and is the largest by any tech firm down under. Mr Albanese said it was important to be on the frontfoot of emerging technologies so Australia shaped its own future rather than 'have the future shape us'. 'My government wants to make sure that Australia seizes the opportunities that are presented by AI,' he said. 'It will boost Australia's economic growth, our resilience and our productivity. 'We want to make sure as well that Australians are better prepared to capitalize on the opportunities of AI, while making sure that we secure ourselves against its risks.' Perth-founded graphic design platform Canva, financial institution CommBank, and software company Atlassian have also harnessed AI through AWS. Mr Garman said while AWS has supported Aussie businesses it also helped the Australian National Swimming Team finesse their performance ahead of the Paris Olympics. 'AI is changing everything that we see, from sports to industry to the economy,' he said. Industry and Innovation Minister Tim Ayres on Sunday labelled Amazon's investment as 'very significant' and a 'pointer to the future' for Australia. 'This is absolutely in our economic interest (and) absolutely in our security and broader geopolitical interest in a fast moving and less secure world,' he told Sky News. He said it presented 'an enormous opportunity' for Australia to boost productivity. The PM said the investment comes ahead of his recently announced productivity roundtable which Treasurer Jim Chalmbers will hold in August. Dr Chalmers is expected to reveal more about the summit when he speaks at the National Press Club on Wednesday. Mr Garman said boosting cloud computing technology would be a 'huge gateway' to new business and job creation. 'We estimate that technology over the next decade will drive over $600 billion increases in Australia's GDP out of the year 2030,' Mr Garman said. As part of the investment the tech giant is also expanding their renewables energy investment to help fuel their initiatives. 'We're announcing the creation of three new large solar farms, two in Victoria and one in Queensland. This will add to the eight renewable projects that we already have running in Australia,' Mr Garman said. Mr Garman noted that while the US backs nuclear energy to support AI's power needs, it would consider renewable investments depending on national preferences. While in Seattle, Mr Albanese also addressed key industry players from startups to larger more well-known companies at a technology and business reception. He pitched Australia as a safe and stable base to reach the Indo-Pacific's growing population to American investors. He also stressed the importance of Australia's free trade ties with the US, appearing to lay the groundwork for his upcoming meeting with President Donald Trump at the G7. 'We bring a lot to the table. We will continue to advocate for free and fair trade, for the jobs it creates and the investment it drives,' he said.
