Brazil coach Ancelotti sentenced to jail term in Spain over tax fraud

Al Jazeera09-07-2025
A Spanish court sentenced Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti to a one-year suspended prison term for tax fraud when he was Real Madrid manager in 2014.
The Madrid court also fined Ancelotti 386,000 euros ($452,187) during Wednesday's proceedings.
Spanish prosecutors accused Ancelotti of defrauding the state of 1 million euros ($1m) in 2014 and 2015.
State prosecutors sought a prison sentence of up to four years and nine months on two counts of tax fraud.
But the former Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain boss, who no longer lives in Spain, will not serve jail time because the sentence is less than two years and he has no criminal record. In Spain, a judge has the discretion to suspend a sentence of less than two years for first-time offenders.
In March 2024, prosecutors accused Ancelotti of having used shell companies to hide his true earnings. They claimed Ancelotti, for example, used one company that lacked 'any real [economic] activity' in the Virgin Islands as part of an alleged scheme.
Carlos Sanchez, Ancelotti's press officer, told The Associated Press that the coach 'will not make comments for now.'
Brazil's football confederation (CBF) said in a statement that it was following the case.
The Italian coach is the latest in a string of major football profiles to face a crackdown by Spanish authorities over unpaid taxes, although none have actually been sent to prison so far. That list includes star players Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as Jose Mourinho, another former Madrid coach.
The CBF did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Ancelotti, who turned 66 last month, is one of football's most successful coaches. He is the only coach to have won the Champions League five times, three with Madrid and twice with AC Milan, and the only coach to have won domestic league titles in England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France.
The former Italy midfielder left Real Madrid to become Brazil boss at the end of last season after a rare trophy-less campaign in the 2024-25 season.

Match abandoned in Argentina with 10 hurt, 90 arrested as violence erupts

Ten people were injured and 90 arrested after violent clashes between rival fans during a Copa Sudamericana match involving Argentina's Independiente and visiting Universidad de Chile in Buenos Aires, club officials and police said. A stun grenade was among the objects hurled by fans as the last-16 second-leg encounter in the regional competition at the Libertadores de America stadium was initially suspended shortly after halftime and eventually abandoned on Wednesday. In shocking and chaotic scenes, one fan of the Chilean visitors jumped from the stands to escape attacking opposing supporters after being cornered. Home supporters beat and stripped some visiting fans of their clothes after storming the away end, an AFP news agency reporter at the scene said. The violence had flared at halftime when fans of the Chilean side began throwing stones, sticks, bottles and seats at a section housing home supporters. 'We have 90 people detained outside the stadium because they tried to cause trouble, and they have already been taken to the police station,' a source from the security ministry told AFP. An Independiente spokesperson said that 10 people were injured. The match was 1-1 when it was suspended in the 48th minute, before being called off. The away side, from the Chilean capital Santiago, won the first leg 1-0. Chile's ambassador to Argentina told Chilean radio station Cooperativa FM that 'there were stab wounds'. Jose Antonio Viera-Gallo also told AFP that at least one person was seriously injured, although it was not clear what their nationality was. Chile's President Gabriel Boric called on social media for those behind the violence to face justice and pointed the finger at organisers. As they left the stadium, Independiente fans expressed anger over the policing of the game and the decision to place the visitors in a section near the home fans. Both clubs condemned the violence, the latest in South American football. Independiente president Nestor Grindetti blamed supporters of the Chilean club, calling their behaviour 'truly reprehensible', he told TyC Sports. Players from both sides had tried unsuccessfully to appeal for calm. 'This level of violence cannot be tolerated,' Chilean international Felipe Loyola, who plays for Independiente, wrote on social media. 'I don't know where the police were.' In April, two people died after fans and police clashed outside the Monumental Stadium in Santiago ahead of a game in the Copa Libertadores between Chile's Colo Colo and Brazilian club Fortaleza.

No Messi, no problem: Inter Miami beat Tigris in Leagues Cup quarterfinal

Luis Suarez scored twice on penalty kicks and Inter Miami overcame Lionel Messi's absence to beat the Tigres UANL from Mexico 2-1 in a Leagues Cup quarterfinal. After leading his team to victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy, Messi did not train ahead of the Wednesday night game. 'We all go off what Messi is feeling. Today, [coach] Javier [Mascherano] spoke with him, and he wasn't feeling the best. We preferred to not risk him, and take a step back,' Inter Miami assistant coach Javier Morales told reporters after the game. Suarez converted his first penalty after Jordi Alba's cross hit the arm of sliding Tigres defender Javier Aquino. Angel Correa scored for the Tigres in the 67th minute, slicing through the defence for the equaliser. Then, the ball once again hit Aquino's arm in the box, and Suarez scored the match-winner from the penalty spot in the 89th minute. A late header from the Tigres' Edgar Lopez ricocheted off both posts. Mascherano was given a red card before the second half began. The Inter Miami coach was seen talking on the phone during the live television broadcast and giving instructions after being sent off, which is prohibited per Leagues Cup rules. 'We were complaining about the time. They said four minutes [off added time], and we ended up playing like six,' Morales said. 'I didn't see what was going on. To be honest, a lot of things happened on the bench,' Morales said when asked about Mascherano giving instructions by phone. Inter Miami's Jordi Alba left early in the second half after hurting his lower leg in a collision late in the first. 'We don't have the medical report yet, but from what I understand, he took a hit to the knee.' Miami booked a semifinal Leagues Cup clash with Florida rivals Orlando City, who beat the Liga MX champions Toluca FC 6-5 on penalties after the teams played to a scoreless draw in Carson, California. Both finalists and the third-place match winner of the tournament will qualify for the Concacaf Champions Cup, with the Leagues Cup champion securing direct entry to the Champions Cup round of 16.

Brazil keeper Fabio breaks Shilton's world record for most games

Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio on Tuesday claimed the record for the most competitive appearances in men's football when the Brazilian played for a 1,391st time. The 44-year-old on Saturday equalled the landmark held by former England stopper Peter Shilton and Fabio has now gone one better following a 2-0 win over Colombia's America de Cali at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro. Fluminense and Brazilian media say Fabio now stands alone in football history, although neither FIFA nor regional body CONMEBOL has declared it a record. 'Sometimes we don't realise the importance of such a significant achievement as breaking this record, which has stood for many years,' Fabio, who has spent his entire career in Brazil, said following his clean sheet in the Copa Sudamericana last-16 second leg. The home fans chanted, 'Fabio is the best goalkeeper in Brazil,' and he received a commemorative plaque to mark the achievement. 'No one plays so many matches without a level of professionalism like his,' said Fluminense coach Renato Gaucho. 'He'll undoubtedly continue to play for a long time. 'It will be difficult for another player to surpass his record.' Fabio won the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense in 2023 and was part of the side that reached the semifinals of the Club World Cup in the United States this summer. They were only stopped by eventual champions, Chelsea. He made 976 appearances for Cruzeiro between 2005 and 2022, after playing 30 times for Uniao Bandeirante and another 150 games for Vasco da Gama. His record outing against America de Cali was his 235th match for Fluminense. Fabio began his career in 1997, the year that Shilton retired, the latter being famed in particular for being beaten to a cross by Argentina's Diego Maradona in the infamous 'Hand of God' goal in the quarterfinal of the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Shilton considers his total number of appearances to be 1,387, but Guinness World Records puts the number at 1,390.
