Three persons sentenced to seven-year imprisonment by NIA court in DJ Halli-KG Halli riots
The accused were sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 36,000 each.
The convicted are Syed Ikramuddin alias Syed Naveed, 49; Syed Asif, 51; and Mohammed Atif, 31; all residents of KG Halli. They earlier had pleaded guilty in the special court. Since their arrest in Aug 2020, the three have been in the judicial custody of Bengaluru central prison.
They were produced through video conference when the special court Judge Kemparaju passed the orders.
Furthermore, the court observed that their stay in prison would be treated as set-off period. Since they have spent five years in prison and their conviction is for seven years, they have to spend two more years in prison.

Initially, the case was probed by Bengaluru city police and then transferred to the NIA. In the case that claimed the lives of three men, 199 suspects were named while 187 accused persons were arrested.

Four accused surrendered before the police. Finally, 138 of the accused persons were charge-sheeted. During the trial, one of them died. The three convicts approached the court, seeking to plead guilty on July 8 this year.
The trial for the other charge-sheeted accused persons is ongoing.
What happened that night
Three persons were killed and over 50, including police, journalists, and civilians, sustained injuries during the mob violence that erupted in DJ Halli and KG Halli on the night of Aug 11, 2020.
The violence initially began over a derogatory social media post uploaded by a close relative of the then Pulakeshinagar Congress MLA Akhanda Srinivas Murthy. The angry mob set a portion of the MLA's house and KG Halli police station on fire.
A police team, led by the then city police commissioner Kamal Pant, opened fire to disperse the mob, resulting in three men dying of bullet injuries.
Reacting to TOI, special public prosecutor P Prasanna Kumar said: "The police are entrusted with the duty of maintaining law and order as well as public order.
When such custodians of law and order and public order are attacked, the confidence of public in the efficiency of the police is likely to be shaken, and thereby public order is likely to be disturbed. We, the people, feel secure when we have a robust police force.
By the act of the accused in torching the KG Halli police station, the confidence of the people at large and their sense of security was shaken. The judgment has not only secured the confidence of the public at large in the police force but also vindicated the action of the central govt in declaring PFI (Popular Front of India) as an unlawful association," he said. |

A doctor in Gujarat's Gandhinagar was allegedly placed under 103 days of 'digital arrest' and forced to sell her properties, take loan against gold to pay the accused over Rs 19.24 crore. The cyber criminals had placed her under alleged 'digital arrest' between March and June this year. While one of the accused allegedly identified herself as Jyoti Vishwanath from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), another identified himself as Police Sub-Inspector Mohan Singh, a third identified himself as Public Prosecutor Deepak Saini, a fourth as Public Prosecutor Venkateswara, and the fifth as as Notary Officer Pawan Kumar. The victim was called from different numbers. 'The accused made phone calls, WhatsApp video calls, and sent messages on the victim's WhatsApp. They allegedly told the victim that they would block her mobile numbers as 'offensive' messages were being sent to people from her numbers. They also allegedly threatened the doctor, who is the complainant in the case, saying that a case would be filed against her,' said a statement from SP Dharmendra Sharma. The accused obtained details of the victim's Aadhaar card and allegedly claimed that she was found involved in money laundering. Later, they even told her that a case of money laundering had been registered against her. The accused also sent a fake letter in which the complainant had been named as an accused in a case for alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) as well as the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). They also warned the victim against talking to anyone about this matter. A case was registered in the matter in July. A statement from the State Cybercrime Cell of the CID on Monday said that an investigation has been launched. As per the State Cyber Crime Cell statement, the accused persons kept the victim under 'digital arrest' for 103 days, from March 15 to June 26 and she was told that a man in plain clothes was keeping an eye on her and if she wanted to get a relief, she would have to provide information about all her properties. 'After the complainant provided the information about the properties, the accused persons made her withdraw her Fixed Deposit (FD), sell the gold in her house and further made her take a loan on the gold in her bank locker. They made her sell her house and shares in her stock market portfolio as well, and made her transfer a total amount of Rs 19,24,41,541 to different bank accounts on a fake receipt of 'Financial Supervisionary Freezing Certificate' for the same, and falsely promised that the money would be returned to her after investigation.'

Minister falls prey to Rs 25L land fraud, files FIR
Bhubaneswar: Odisha cabinet minister Krushna Chandra Patra has fallen prey to an alleged land fraud, leading to the registration of a cheating case against a property dealer in Dhenkanal district. According to an FIR filed by Patra at Town police station in Dhenkanal on Saturday, he had transferred Rs 25 lakh to Niranjan Satpathy in 2021 to purchase a plot of land in Banasingh area of Dhenkanal district. Satpathy, however, neither transferred the property nor returned the money to Patra. "Based on my complaint, police are investigating the case. The incident occurred in 2021 when I was not an MLA. I was then working as a director in a company and had planned to purchase land. I gave the money to Satpathy, but he reneged on the land deal," the food supplies & consumer welfare minister said on Monday. The complaint read that Satpathy contacted Patra through an intermediary in 2021, offering land at an attractive price. Satpathy presented land documents and claimed the property belonged to someone who was eager to sell, subsequently collecting Rs 25 lakh from Patra. Further verification by Patra revealed that Satpathy neither possessed land nor had any arrangements with landowners, indicating his intention to deceive. "He has failed to return my money. This act has caused me financial distress and mental grief. By taking advantage of my simplicity, he cheated me. I request that immediate action be taken against him," the FIR copy read. Dhenkanal town police inspector Prabhat Sahoo said they are verifying the minister's allegation. "We have issued summons to the suspect to face interrogation. No smart meters for farmers, rollout limited to industrial, commercial consumers: AP energy minister
Visakhapatnam: Energy minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar underscored the critical need to raise public awareness about smart electricity meters. He clarified that no smart meters have been installed for agricultural connections in Andhra Pradesh, affirming that the rollout is limited solely to industrial and commercial consumers. He directed the Discoms to proactively educate people, clarifying the smart meter policy and dispelling any misinformation or apprehensions about the technology. A comprehensive review meeting was held on Monday by Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar, with participation from APEPDCL CMD Immadi Prudhvi Tej, to assess power supply within the APEPDCL jurisdiction. Officials reported that power supply aligns well with demand and emphasised that in nine out of eleven agriculture-focused districts, nine hours of continuous electricity is being reliably supplied to farming consumers. The minister emphasised that misconceptions circulating on social media must be addressed through structured outreach efforts. He called on officials to engage directly with consumers, providing accurate information on where and why smart meters are being deployed, ensuring that any doubts are resolved before installations proceed.
