A Memphis man charged with fatally shooting his girlfriend is claiming he pulled the trigger after mistaking her as a "male with dreads" at his front door.
Jyrah Smith, 23, was found with a gunshot wound to the head right outside the front door of her 27-year-old boyfriend, Deangelo Mitchell's, apartment on May 23.
Mitchell Had Allegedly Previously Threatened to Kill Smith
As reported by WREG, Mitchell told police he shot Smith in a case of mistaken identity. Police responded to reports of shots ringing out following an argument on the second floor of one of the apartment buildings in the 400 block of East Georgia Avenue.
Smith's family members told police that Mitchell had previously threatened to kill her and her three children — a 1-year-old, a 3-year-old, and a 6-year-old.
Mitchell Fled from the Scene After the Shooting, Did Not Attempt to Aid Smith or Call an Ambulance
Police said Mitchell threw the shotgun away after the shooting and did not attempt to aid Smith or call an ambulance. A spent shotgun shell was located inside Mitchell's apartment, but he was nowhere to be found. Police say Mitchell turned himself in at around 1:20 p.m. that same day.
He told officers that he was asleep and woke up to male and female voices outside his apartment. He said they were knocking on his door, so he armed himself with a shotgun.
When Mitchell opened the door, he shot who he claims he thought was a man with dreads. Mitchell said he was a few feet away from the person he shot and didn't recognize the person as Smith. Mitchell has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with Smith's shooting death.
Mitchell Has a History of Domestic Violence
Records show Mitchell has a history of domestic violence. He was arrested in August 2024 after he allegedly punched the mother of his child in the face repeatedly while she was working at a hotel.
In November 2019, Mitchell was arrested and charged with assault after he allegedly kicked and punched a woman in the head multiple times. In January 2020, he was charged with violating bond agreements in connection with the previous incident. He was allegedly caught banging on his ex-girlfriend's window.
Mitchell is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 9. Smith's family has set up a GoFundMe as they try to raise money for her funeral costs.

Elias Rodriguez: DC Jewish Museum Shooter Has Links to Radical Socialist Groups Funded by Millionaire Chinese Sympathizer Neville Singham
The suspected terrorist who shot dead two Israeli embassy staffers in Washington on Wednesday is linked to radical socialist groups that receive funding from far-left Chinese sympathizer and millionaire, Neville Singham, and his activist wife, Jodie Evans. Elias Rodriguez, 31, who admitted to killing the couple near the Capital Jewish Museum while shouting "free, free Palestine," was part of the broader network through his involvement with the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), a communist political group that has been running presidential candidates since 2008. Rodriguez also raised $240 in 2018 via a GoFundMe campaign to join the March to Fight Poverty in Washington, D.C, according to the Anti-Defamation League. Suspicious Liaisons Rodriguez was also earlier active in protests and rallies around Chicago in 2017 and 2018 as part of the ANSWER Coalition, another far-left socialist group. The PSL and the ANSWER Coalition are both linked to the People's Forum, a nonprofit organization based in Manhattan that has ties to the Chinese Communist Party, primarily through financial backing from Singham, 71. All three groups have taken part in anti-Israel demonstrations, and previous reports indicate that the People's Forum has placed several cadres at Columbia University, which has become a major hub for such protests. The People's Forum has reportedly received over $20 million in grant money from Singham, with a large portion funneled through the Goldman Sachs Philanthropy Fund, a fiscal sponsor, according to earlier reporting by The Post. Besides, the Bronx Antiwar Coalition, another group linked to organizations within Singham's network, publicly praised the killing of the Israeli diplomats in a post on X on Thursday. "What Elias Rodriguez did is the highest expression of anti-Zionism," a tweet from the group proclaimed. The Bronx Anti-War Coalition was founded by Dee Knight, a far-left socialist and pro-China advocate who has worked with the People's Forum, according to reports. Knight's latest book, "Befriending China: People to People Peacemaking", received advance praise from 70-year-old Jodie Evans, a prominent activist who advocates for stronger ties between the U.S. and China. "He reveals in so many ways that China is not our enemy, but has an abundance to share with us," wrote Evans, who has written her own book about embracing China in conjunction with Tricontental Insitute for Social Research, a Marxist think tank center funded by her husband and the Communist Party of China (CCP), according to the Network Contagion Research Institute. Singham at the Center of Controversy According to a report by the New Jersey-based think tank National Contagion Research Institute, Singham's son, Nate Singham, works as a researcher at the center. Meanwhile, the PSL tried to distance from Rodriguez on Thursday, saying that his "brief association" with one of their branches ended in 2017. We have nothing to do with this shooting and do not support it." Claudia de la Cruz, a socialist activist from the Bronx, was listed as the first president of the People's Forum in 2017 and ran for U.S. president in 2024 under the Party for Socialism and Liberation banner. During her campaign, De La Cruz raised close to $400,000. She stepped down from her leadership role at the nonprofit in 2023, according to federal records. Ben Becker, one of the party's founding members, is listed as a board member of Breakthrough Media—a nonprofit linked to the People's Forum and located at the same Midtown address, according to public documents. De La Cruz is also listed as a board member of Breakthrough Media in its 2023 federal filings.

Female Arkansas Teacher and Church Volunteer Who Sexually Assaulted 15-Year-Old Church Member, Gets Probation After Pleading No Contest
Reagan Danielle Gray, a former middle school teacher and Immanuel Baptist Church praise team member, pleaded no contest on Monday to second-degree sexual assault involving one of the congregation's minors. Originally charged with first-degree sexual assault, she accepted a plea agreement reducing the count and dismissing a separate count of fourth-degree sexual assault. Gray Sentenced to 6 Years Probation, $1,000 Fine and Required to Register as a Sex Offender, Avoid Contact with Victim According to deputy prosecuting attorney Claire Maddox, Gray had engaged in sexual contact with a minor while she was serving as a volunteer in the student ministry at Immanuel Baptist Church and that she had done so while holding "a position of trust or authority" over the minor. After briefly questioning her, Sixth Judicial Circuit Court Judge LaTonya Honorable found her guilty, determining that Gray had "knowingly, intelligently and voluntarily" entered the no-contest plea. She sentenced Gray to six years probation, assessed her $1,000 in fines plus court costs and ordered her to stay away from the victim. Gray, 27, was also required to submit a DNA sample and to register as a sex offender. She'll have to undergo random drug screens and drug treatment as deemed necessary by probations, the judge said. Gray had been accused of sexually assaulting a high-school aged music ministry volunteer, beginning when he was 15 years old. Prosecutors said the criminal conduct occurred from roughly Sept. 1, 2020, through May 31, 2021. Victim's Parents Discovered Text Exchanges Between Their Son and Gray, Reported Her to the Head Pastor According to the investigator, the alleged victim's parents discovered text messages between the alleged victim and Gray in 2020 that they reported to a senior pastor at the church. The affidavit continued that then-head pastor Steven Smith then confronted Gray about the messages and was told by her that the relationship was not physical. Gray was then removed from student ministry and required by the church to undergo counseling, which she did, investigators said. The affidavit states that she returned to student ministry shortly after being removed. Smith later told FBI investigators in February 2024 that Gray had confessed in counseling that the relationship between her and the alleged victim was "sexual in nature," according to the affidavit. The affidavit continues that Gray and the victim continued sending messages to each other using the Snapchat application instead of text messages. Gray and Victim Continued to Have Sexual Contact with Victim, Had Encounters with Him in Her Car, Apartment The affidavit shows Smith told investigators Gray and the alleged victim had additional physical contact since the 2020 discovery of their relationship. Gray told Smith about this, investigators reported. The affidavit details that an FBI investigator interviewed the alleged victim in February and was told the alleged victim and Gray had sexual contact when Gray was 23 years old and the victim was 15 years old. The alleged victim also said he received nude images on the phone from Gray "on a daily basis" and that she requested the victim send images as well. Per the affidavit, the alleged victim told investigators they did not remember sending images but considering the nature of the relationship, he said it probably did happen. In the affidavit the alleged victim continued to tell investigators that they never had procreative sex but did have sexual interaction, either in Gray's car or her apartment. "Ms. Gray, let me say this. Keep in mind that actions that you do impact other people. Take this time to reflect on whatever decisions you made that landed you here and look for a way to repent, if you will, and change whatever course got you here," Honorable said. In a written statement afterwards, Prosecuting Attorney Will Jones said the conviction "ensures the defendant will be supervised by Arkansas Community Corrections, undergo a sex offender assessment and register as a sex offender, providing accountability and protection for the community."
