Former Singapore transport minister Iswaran completes sentence for corruption, released from custody

Malay Mail06-06-2025
SINGAPORE, June 6 — Singapore's former transport minister S. Iswaran is no longer under prison custody, having completed his sentence under Singapore's Home Detention Scheme, the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) confirmed today.
Iswaran, 61, began serving a 12-month jail term in October 2024 after pleading guilty to corruption-related charges — making him the first former Cabinet minister in Singapore to be jailed.
He was incarcerated for four months before being placed on home detention from February 7 this year.
The SPS had earlier said he met the criteria for the scheme, citing his low risk of reoffending, clean record during incarceration, and strong family support.
With the completion of his home detention, Iswaran's sentence has now officially ended.
Iswaran was a Cabinet member for 13 years and had held the trade, communications and transport portfolios.
He pleaded guilty last year to four counts of improperly receiving more than S$300,000 (RM986,000) worth of gifts, and one of obstructing justice.

Australians more anxious about Trump tariffs than China, poll shows

While Australia received the minimum 10 per cent levy on its exports to the US, it could still be in the firing line for sectoral tariffs on industries such as pharmaceuticals. - Bloomberg CANBERRA: Australians are more worried about the Trump administration's protectionist trade policies than China's military buildup in the Asia-Pacific region, a new opinion poll showed. Some 42 per cent of respondents named US tariffs as their top concern compared with 37 per cent who cited the strategic threat from China, according to a Newspoll published Monday (Aug 18) in The Australian. A further 21 per cent said neither bothered them, the survey conducted Aug. 11-14 for the newspaper showed. It had a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points. While Australia received the minimum 10 per cent levy on its exports to the US, it could still be in the firing line for sectoral tariffs on industries such as pharmaceuticals. More generally, it is heavily exposed to global trade as an export-reliant nation and could also see blowback on import duties from its largest trading partner, China. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese undertook a six-day visit to China last month that included meetings with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang in Beijing. While there, he focussed heavily on boosting business and trade ties, sidestepping thornier issues around US-China competition, Taiwan and Beijing's military assertiveness. University-educated voters were more worried about US tariffs than China's military expansion, according to the survey. The results were more evenly split for those without university education, it said On local politics, Newspoll showed Albanese's Labour Party leading the centre-right coalition 56 to 44 per cent, slightly up on the May 3 election result that delivered Labour 94 seats in the 150-member parliament. The prime minister's net satisfaction rating also turned positive for the first time since September 2023, it showed. - Bloomberg

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Federal police will refer its investigation paper into the death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) tomorrow. Bukit Aman criminal investigation department (CID) director M Kumar said the cops will obtain the advice and direction of the AGC following the ongoing investigation by a special task force. Kumar said 195 witnesses have given their statements, including students, teachers, medical officers, security guards, dorm wardens, Zara's parents and other material witnesses. Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after allegedly falling from the third floor of her school's hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital the following day. Her mother, Noraidah Lamat, filed a police report on Aug 3 stating that she recalled seeing bruises on parts of her daughter's back during the Islamic funeral washing ritual. Last weekend, the cops exhumed Zara's body to allow for a post-mortem amid allegations of bullying. On Wednesday, the AGC ordered for an inquest to be held into Zara's death to determine whether there were criminal elements involved. The inquest will be held by a coroner's court and will come up for mention in the Kota Kinabalu magistrates' court tomorrow.

Man arrested after setting JB city council tow truck on fire

CCTV footage showed the suspect pouring petrol over an MBJB tow truck before setting it on fire, causing damage worth an estimated RM10,000. PETALING JAYA : A 31-year-old man has been arrested for setting fire to a Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) tow truck on Friday morning. Johor Bahru Selatan police chief Raub Selamat said the suspect, who had his car towed away the day before, did not have any money to pay the compound fine to have the car released. 'The suspect was asked to file an appeal but he felt that the process was too difficult. He then poured petrol over an MBJB tow truck before setting it on fire, causing damage worth an estimated RM10,000. 'The suspect was arrested on the same day at 1.06pm while police confiscated several items, including an aluminium container and a lighter,' he said in a statement. Raub said the suspect had a criminal record for narcotics offences but tested negative for drugs. The man is under remand until Tuesday.
