PBDS calls for end to political interference in tuai rumah appointments

Borneo Post3 days ago

Dr John Brian Anthony
KUCHING (June 9): Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) has called for an end to political interference in the appointment of tuai rumah (longhouse chief).
The party's permanent chairman Dr John Brian Anthony claimed that political interference in the appointment of community leaders has long occurred in the Dayak community.
He explained that such practice not only 'contaminates' the customs and traditional social structure of the Dayak community but also erodes their trust in grassroots leadership institution.
'These are also often used as a political tool to ensure support for certain parties, thus weakening the autonomy of the community.
'PBDS emphasises that the appointment of tuai rumah should be based on the acceptance and trust of the community they represent, not based on the influence or interference of any political party.
'This appointment process needs to return to the foundations of custom, community values, and genuine leadership spirit,' he said in a press statement.
His statement was issued in support of Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, who on Sunday warned a certain political party leader against meddling in the selection of committee members for the Sibu Chinese Community Leaders Association.
John Brian noted that Tiong's criticism shows how political interference has affected communities in Sarawak.
Therefore, he urged the Sarawak government and relevant authorities to cease all forms of political interference in the appointment of community leaders, including tuai rumah.
He added that this should be achieved by formulating transparent and fair guidelines for grassroots leadership appointments, with active community involvement.
He stressed that the government must restore the Dayak community's autonomous power to nominate credible tuai rumah candidates who are accepted by the majority.
'PBDS will continue to fight for the rights and dignity of the Dayak community so that their social structure and customs are not further compromised for short-term political interests.
'Grassroots leadership is not a political tool — it is the voice of the community,' he said.

DOSM elected to chair Asean statistics working group for 2026–2027

PUTRAJAYA: The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) has been unanimously elected as chair of the Working Group on Data Sharing, Analysis, Dissemination and Communication of Statistics (WGDSA) for the 2026–2027 term. The decision was made at the 23rd Meeting of the WGDSA (WGDSA23), which began yesterday in Putrajaya. The two-day meeting brought together 18 delegates from Asean Member States (AMS) and the Asean Secretariat (Aseanstats), with Myanmar participating virtually. The gathering aimed to strengthen regional statistical cooperation, enhance data transparency and improve communication strategies under the ASEAN Community Statistical System (ACSS). Chief statistician and ACSS15 chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin, said in a statement today that the appointment reflected the continued trust of member states in Malaysia's active role in advancing the Asean statistical system. He reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to fostering innovation, inclusivity and resilience in the regional statistical ecosystem, stressing the importance of accessible, reliable and timely statistics in supporting evidence-based policymaking and Asean's integration and development goals. "As we move forward together, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that statistics are communicated clearly, shared meaningfully and used effectively to support Asean's progress. "Malaysia, as Asean chair for 2025, remains committed to promoting statistical cooperation, capacity building and innovation across the region," he said. Discussions at the meeting focused on the implementation of the WGDSA Multi-Year Plan (MYP), expansion of the Asean Statistical Indicators – Consolidated Template (ASI-CT), integration of Application Programming Interfaces (API) for real-time data access, and increased statistical outreach through initiatives such as the Asean Virtual Learning Academy and targeted awareness programmes. Mohd Uzir said the meeting also discussed enhancements to the ASICT data collection template for indicators in areas such as micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the manufacturing sector, inflation, population and employment. A key milestone of WGDSA23 was the presentation of Malaysia's preliminary 2025 Action Plan for the Awareness Initiative - an ACSS Annual Priority under the Asean Economic Community (AEC) reporting framework. "The initiative was previously endorsed by the Heads of National Statistical Offices (NSOs) at the 14th Session of the Asean Community Statistical System (ACSS14) in Laos. "As the lead country, Malaysia announced the formation of a dedicated Task Force on Statistical Awareness and Engagement under WGDSA to spearhead its implementation," he said. The outcomes of WGDSA23 will directly inform the ACSS Action Plan 2026–2030, aligned with the broader Asean Community's post-2025 vision, reinforcing the role of statistics in regional integration and policy development.

PDP VP backs president's criticism of partisan interference in Sibu community association

Wong stresses the importance of fair and balanced leadership appointments, calling for capable individuals from across the political spectrum to be given the opportunity to serve. – Photo by Chimon Upon SIBU (June 11): Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) senior vice president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has voiced support for party president Dato Sri Tiong King Sing's recent remarks criticising the reduction of community leaders into mere 'party assets.' He stressed the importance of fair and balanced leadership appointments, calling for capable individuals from across the political spectrum to be given the opportunity to serve. In a statement, Wong referred to Tiong's recent allegation that a political party had interfered in the outcome of the Persatuan Ketua Kaum Masyarakat Cina Sibu Sarawak (Sibu Chinese Community Leaders Association) election. He described the incident as part of a broader pattern of political meddling in grassroots affairs. According to Wong, PDP had nominated 14 candidates for the association's executive committee, none of whom were successful. The Bawang Assan assemblyman claimed the newly elected committee appears heavily aligned with one particular political party, which he said goes against the association's original inclusive spirit. He also criticised the association's subsequent clarification statement, calling it unconvincing and evasive. The former Sarawak minister questioned how the association could exert such influence over its own internal election and urged component parties within the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition to address the matter through calm and constructive dialogue. He emphasised the need for a transparent, fair, and inclusive resolution due to its broader impact on the Chinese community. Wong said if the association truly wants to be seen as impartial and community-driven, it should welcome representation from all political parties. 'Only then can the association rightfully claim to represent the broader Chinese community, rather than functioning as a partisan 'one-voice' platform,' he said. He further questioned whether community leaders aligned with a single party would extend help to individuals from differing political backgrounds, noting that such behaviour is becoming increasingly common in Sibu. Wong praised Tiong for speaking out, saying he exposed what he described as an ongoing attempt by a political party to dominate local influence and treat community positions as political tools. 'The people of Sibu are well aware of the unscrupulous tactics employed by the said party. As the party president rightly pointed out, this party seeks to monopolise influence at the local level. 'If it is truly that dominant, would it also adopt the same attitude during elections? If so, does it still require the support of allied parties? Let it then 'perform' accordingly during elections — and we shall all watch in silence to observe its real influence,' he said. He again criticised the association's rebuttal as ineffective, asserting: 'Facts speak louder than words.' 'If the association truly wishes to earn the public's trust, it should transparently publish the list of newly elected committee members so the public can assess their political affiliations and backgrounds for themselves. The truth will then become evident to all.' Wong also warned against excessive reliance on constitutional provisions to justify exclusionary decisions. He said any objective observer can see the imbalance when a committee consists entirely of members linked to one party, risking turning the association into a partisan body and abandoning its core mission of community service. He cautioned that such developments could erode the independence of civil society organisations in Sibu. Wong called on the unnamed political party to stop interfering in grassroots matters, especially in the appointment of community leaders. He warned that continued involvement could provoke public discontent and weaken the integrity of local associations. Political parties at the local level should not be leading the charge in sowing division or partisanship, he said. 'Instead, they should serve the public with humility and act as effective bridges between the government and the people, ultimately working for the betterment of the entire Chinese community and its future,' he concluded.
