Weekend heat builds across Colorado
After a week of unsettled weather, Colorado is in for a drier weekend—though not entirely quiet. And while summer officially starts next week, the heat is already making itself at home.

While most of the Front Range will remain dry, don't be surprised if you see a few high-based showers or feel a sudden gust of wind this weekend. These showers likely won't bring much rain to the ground, but gusts up to 50 mph are possible—especially Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Thunderstorms will mostly stay confined to far eastern Colorado. The best chances for severe storms—capable of producing golf ball-sized hail and 70 mph winds—are from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday in areas east of a line from Fort Morgan to Limon.

Temperatures will soar into the 90s across the Denver metro area through Monday, with a strong ridge of high pressure keeping things hot and mostly dry.

Tuesday brings a short-lived break from the heat as a cold front sweeps through. Highs will drop into the 80s with a chance for showers and storms. By Wednesday, skies clear again and temperatures stay below 90°F one more day. By Thursday, the heat returns with a vengeance. Highs in the 90s dominate the forecast late next week, with some areas possibly reaching the low 100s next weekend (June 21–22), just in time for the official start of summer.

Mile-long stretch of downtown Olympia road, park to close for maintenance
The Department of Enterprise Services will close a portion of Deschutes Parkway and Marathon Park for maintenance next week. According to a news release from the DES, Deschutes Parkway will close to vehicle traffic from Lakeridge Drive Southwest to Fifth Avenue from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, June 16 and June 17. The roadside path and all of Marathon Park, including the parking area and restrooms, will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, June 16 to June 18. The restrooms at the Capitol Lake Interpretive Center also will be closed during this time period. The pathway through Marathon Park to the bridge over Capitol Lake also will be closed during this time. Staff will be mowing the brush along the lake, replacing broken light bulbs in streetlamps, cleaning light poles and benches along the road, and painting the interior of the restrooms at the Interpretive Center, the markings on the road and the park parking lot.

The usual expression describes vanishing into thin air. In Washington on Saturday, the opposite seemed to occur. The city's distant views and vistas disappeared frequently into what appeared to be thick air. Particularly in late afternoon and early evening, the air in and around the city was filled with tiny droplets of moisture, droplets that hovered aloft, suspended between ground and sky.
