Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back, girlfriend behind dog rescue TV show

Coming soon to a TV near you: Brady Oliveira, Alex Blumberg, and a whole lot of dogs.
The Blue Bombers running back and his girlfriend have started filming a new show for CBC that's scheduled to air next spring called Must Love Dogs.
Viewers will see the Winnipeg couple hit the road on dog rescue missions across Manitoba as they try to save as many four-legged friends as possible before winter hits.

Season 1 will feature 10 episodes, lasting 30 minutes each.
'It's very exciting. I think Alex and I wanted this to happen for one reason only, and that is to shine a spotlight on an issue and cause that's near and dear to our hearts, which is obviously dogs and animal rescue,' Oliveira told the Free Press this week.
Blumberg added: 'It will spotlight the issues that we do have in Manitoba that a lot of people probably have no idea about… It's not just you see a cute puppy and it's up for adoption, there's so much more that goes into it. We're just really excited to share that story and have it be in our hometown.'
The canines are the focus, but cameras will also roll on Oliveira's life as a Blue Bomber. Filming began before training camp and will continue throughout the 2025 season, going behind the scenes on the highs and lows of his gridiron career.
'Obviously, everyone sees the results on game day when we're under the lights, and that's all good and everything, but people don't see everything that goes into being a pro athlete and playing at a high level,' said Oliveira, the reigning CFL Most Outstanding Player and a two-time Most Outstanding Canadian.
'It's going to bring a lot of eyes and a lot of great recognition and, hopefully, more viewership to the CFL because I want this league to continue to grow. I think this show is going to blow up, not just here in Canada, but internationally and in the U.S. This is going to be amazing for everyone.'

How does Bombers head coach Mike O'Shea feel about pulling back the curtain for a production crew?
'I don't think he's too fond of cameras in general. But we have had a conversation about this,' said Oliveira.
'He's excited for me, and if it's something that you're very passionate about, he's on board. He understands that this isn't just about Alex and I, this is about a greater good, a greater cause.'

After Oliveira and Blumberg met each other through their work with K9 Advocacy Manitoba, the couple started travelling in the winter months to places like Mexico and Bali, Indonesia, where they filmed a video miniseries for The Dodo — a brand that shares animal-related stories to millions of online followers.
Making the jump to television was the goal, and it turns out a chance encounter in a hotel lobby in Mexico got the ball rolling.
Oliveira was on his way to take out a rescue pup for a walk when producers John Hall and Kayvon Saremi, who were in Cabo San Lucas at the time working on a project for Netflix, struck up a conversation.
'When I shared the work that we do, it kind of sparked something in their heads where they were like, 'This sounds like a TV show,'' said Oliveira. 'They've been grinding the last two years to put something together. We created a pilot trailer and a pitch deck, and then they've been doing their thing, trying to sell it to different networks and here we are.'
'I think meeting them was definitely the reason this all transpired,' said Blumberg, a realtor for Monopoly Realty. 'For a few years, they fought for us, and they believed in what we were doing and now it's coming to fruition and we're super fortunate for the group that they put together to be a part of this.'
The show is produced by Omnifilm Entertainment, a content company based out of Vancouver. The series will also recognize local organizations such as K9 Advocacy, Winnipeg Pet Rescue and Manitoba Animal Alliance, as well as independent rescuers like Jasmine Colucci and Ryan Klassen.
'It just shows that regular people can do extraordinary things and make the world a better place.'–Alex Blumberg
The rescue adventures in the debut season all take place in Indigenous communities across the province.
'You're going to see incredible Indigenous people in these communities that are our contacts when we go to these communities,' said Oliveira.
'They're the ones that are doing the work every single day when we're not there… You're going to see many amazing individuals that are just trying to help their community in a positive way.'
Above everything else, Oliveira and Blumberg hope the show inspires others to get out and help.
'It doesn't really matter how busy life is, you can always make time for something you're passionate about,' said Blumberg.
'It just shows that regular people can do extraordinary things and make the world a better place.'

Summer McIntosh goes for her second gold on Day 2 at the swimming world championships

SINGAPORE (AP) — It's Day 2 at the swimming world championships in Singapore. That means it's a chance for Summer McIntosh to add her second gold medal after winning the 400 freestyle on the opening day. The 18-year-old Canadian is trying for five individual golds across the eight-day event in Singapore. On Monday she's a strong favorite to get her second gold, this time in the 200-meter individual medley. She set the world record of 2 minutes, 05.70 seconds at the Canadian trials a few months ago. McIntosh is expected to be challenged by American Alex Walsh. Also in the field is 12-year-old Chinese Yu Zidi, whose age and astounding times are the talk of global swimming. The women's 100 butterfly is another eye-catching race. American Gretchen Walsh — Alex's older sister — is the favorite and set the world record of 54.60 earlier this year. Roos Vanotterdijk of Belgium and Australia's Alexandria Perkins will push Walsh. Two more finals are set. Qin Haiyang of China and Nicolo Marinenghi of Italy are the favorites in the 100 breaststroke. The Italian is the Olympian champion from Paris, and Qin won this event two years ago at the worlds in Fukuoka, Japan. The 50 fly final is wide open, but the quickest qualifiers were Maxime Grousset of France and Noe Ponti of Switzerland. There are also three semifinals Monday — the men's 100 backstroke, the men's 200 free, and the women's 100 backstroke. ___ AP sports:

Tiger-Cats 37, B.C. Lions 33: Hamilton completes comeback with last-minute touchdown

VANCOUVER — A last-minute touchdown reception from Kiondre Smith lifted the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to a 37-33 win over the B.C. Lions on Sunday. Article content Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 389 yards, three touchdowns and an interception as the Ticats (5-2) stretched their win streak to five straight games. Article content Jake Dolegala tallied a rushing major for the Ticats, and Brendan O'Leary-Orange also reeled in a TD pass. Article content Kicker Marc Liegghio made four converts and three field goals, including a 40-yard attempt, as his team overcame a 10-point deficit late in the fourth quarter. Article content Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke threw for 289 yards, connecting on 20 of his 27 attempts, while kicker Sean Whyte made four field goals — including a 45-yard kick — and three converts. Article content Article content Running back James Butler notched a pair of rushing TDs against his former team and rushed for 115 yards on 16 carries. Article content Butler played two seasons for Hamilton before being released by the club in January. He signed with B.C. as a free agent hours later, making a return to the team where he started his CFL career and had a breakout campaign in 2022. Article content He wasted little time in exacting revenge on his former team. Article content About five minutes into the game, Rourke faked a handoff to Butler, kept the ball himself and sprinted toward the end zone. Article content His backup, Jeremiah Masoli, came on for short yardage duty and dished off to Butler, who manoeuvred his way through traffic and over the goal line for a touchdown. He celebrated with an emphatic spike that sent the ball sailing into the stands. Article content Rourke put in another big run before the end of the first quarter, dashing 21 yards through the midfield and Butler followed suit with a 23-yard run. The QB then handed off to Butler once again and the running back slipped through a hole and into the end zone for his second major of the night. Whyte made the convert and B.C. went up 14-3. Article content Article content Hamilton started the second with a first down on B.C.'s two-yard line and eventually made good on the positioning when Dolegala powered through the crowd for the Ticats' first touchdown of the game. Article content Liegghio added an 11-yard field goal midway through the quarter, cutting his team's deficit to a single point. Article content The Lions responded with some big plays, including Rourke's dish to an unmanned Keon Hatcher Sr. in the midfield. The receiver took advantage, sprinting deep into Hamilton territory for a 73-yard gain. Whyte capped the scoring drive with a 22-yard field goal. Article content With just over a minute left in the first half, B.C. cornerback Robert Carter Jr. made his own highlight reel-worthy play. Mitchell launched a rainbow toward the end zone, where Carter snuck up behind Hamilton receiver O'Leary-Orange, leapt up and — with one hand — reeled in the ball.

Create Account Toronto placed incumbent Chad Kelly on the six-game injured list Saturday before its 31-17 home win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Argos had put Kelly on the one-game list through each week of the season, allowing the CFL's 2023 outstanding player to practise with the team as he recovered from a serious leg injury suffered in last year's East Division final. With Kelly sidelined, Arbuckle led Toronto to its 41-24 Grey Cup win over Winnipeg at B.C. Place. He was named the game MVP after completing 26-of-37 passes for 252 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The Argos were hopeful Kelly might return following their bye week. However, Arbuckle — who has been the starter all season to this point — remained under centre for Toronto's 26-25 loss to Montreal on Thursday before leading the squad to its first home victory Saturday night. And Arbuckle will remain under centre Friday night when Toronto (2-5) visits Winnipeg (3-3) to complete the home-and-home set. 'I think it (placing Kelly on six-game list) is a smart decision,' Toronto coach Ryan Dinwiddie said following Saturday's game. 'We've got to look after Chad and the organization. 'We just can't force his hand, 'Let's play,' when we're not sure yet. When we're fully sure of the situation collectively we'll make that decision. He's willing to play but at the same time we're going to put him on the field when he's ready to play.' Kelly was on Toronto's sidelines Saturday night but Dinwiddie said there's no timeline regarding when the quarterback will make his '25 debut. 'Who knows?' he said. 'That could be week to week but he's working at it. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. 'He wants to be there for his brothers … he's always around and when he's around he makes us better, on or off the field. When the time comes we'll make that decision but it's got to be collectively … we have to make a decision when it's the right time and we won't make that decision until it is the right time.' Kelly missed Toronto's first nine regular-season games in 2024 due to a CFL-imposed suspension. The six-foot-one, 216-pound American returned to the Argos, completing 175-of-258 passes (67.8 per cent) for 2,451 yards with 10 TDs and eight interceptions. He earned CFL outstanding player honours in 2023 after passing for 4,123 yards with 23 TDs and 12 interceptions. Canada Editorials Sports Canada Toronto & GTA
