Travel advisory issued for Southern New Mexico
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Travel advisories have been issued for Tuesday, May 13, and Wednesday, May 14, due to strong winds and blowing dust expected to impact Southern New Mexico between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m., the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) said.
NMDOT said the National Weather Service has forecasted sustained wind speeds of 25 to 35 mph and peak gusts up to 45 to 55 mph, peaking between 3 and 6 p.m.
If you must travel, NMDOT recommends monitoring local forecast conditions before starting your trip and visiting www.nmroads.com for current roadway information.
Roadway conditions may change quickly, and blowing dust can escalate to blinding dust storms as they move quickly through remote areas, NMDOT said.
If you are approaching a dust storm or caught in a dust storm, NMDOT said to follow the guidelines below to help you stay safe:
Avoid driving into or through a dust storm.
Do not wait until poor visibility makes it difficult to safely pull off the roadway — do it as soon as possible. Completely exit the highway if you can.
If you encounter a dust storm, check traffic immediately around your vehicle (front, back and to the side) and begin slowing down.
Do not stop in the roadway; pull completely out of the travel lanes and as far onto the right shoulder as possible.
Stop the vehicle in a position ensuring it is a safe distance from the main roadway and away from where other vehicles may travel.
Turn off all vehicle lights, including your emergency flashers.
Set your emergency brake and take your foot off the brake.
Stay in the vehicle with your seat belts buckled and wait for the storm to pass.
Drivers of high-profile vehicles should be especially aware of changing weather conditions and travel at reduced speeds.
NMDOT will be monitoring roadway conditions with local law enforcement.

The St. Katharine Drexel pilgrimage is traveling from Indianapolis to Los Angeles and making stops along the way, the El Paso Diocese said. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 131 S. Zaragoza Road, will host a Mass and other events, starting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10. Mass will be at 3 p.m., Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be at 4:30 p.m., matachines dancers at 6:30 p.m., and a eucharistic procession to the Diocesan Pastoral Center will start at 7. St. Francis of Assisi Church, 5750 Doniphan, will host a Mass at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, June 11. Eucharistic adoration will be at 8 a.m. The 2025 pilgrimage includes visits to several significant spiritual sites, including the tomb of Archbishop Fulton Sheen, the Shrine of Blessed Stanley Rother, and sacred Native and Hispanic lands, culminating in a grand celebration on Corpus Christi weekend in Los Angeles, the Diocese said. Canonized in 2000, St. Katharine Drexel was a tireless advocate for Native and African Americancommunities, the Diocese said. She founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and established over 100 schools and missions across the United States. County bans sale, use of some fireworks in unincorporated areas for July Fourth
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso County Commissioners Court voted on Monday, June 9 to prohibit the sale and use of some fireworks in the unincorporated areas of the County for the July Fourth season. County commissioners voted to prohibit the sale and use of fireworks classified as 'skyrockets with sticks' and 'missiles with fins,' commonly known as 'sticks and fins,' in the unincorporated areas of El Paso County. Unincorporated areas include parts of the County that are outside city limits and are not governed by municipal governments such as those of El Paso, Socorro, Horizon City, or San Elizario. El Paso County commissioners to look at possibly banning some types of fireworks 'This targeted restriction was adopted as a precautionary measure in response to ongoing extremely dry conditions across the region. According to the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI), El Paso County has reached a level of 710, which indicates elevated fire risk and meets the threshold for implementing restrictions,' the Countuy said. County officials said this is not a blanket ban on fireworks. Many types of legal fireworks remain permitted, allowing residents to continue celebrating the holiday with family and friends – safely and responsibly. 'The (Commissioners) Court acknowledges that these decisions can impact local small businesses that rely on seasonal fireworks sales, and the decision to implement restrictions was not made lightly. County officials stressed that public safety remains the top priority, but they remain mindful of the challenges that small business owners face during this critical sales period,' the County said in its news release. The Commissioners Court urges residents and vendors to exercise caution and good judgment during the Fourth of July season, emphasizing that personal responsibility is key to preventing dangerous fire incidents and protecting the community, the County said in its news release. 'This includes keeping our neighborhoods free of debris and trash that may accumulate during the 4th of July festivities,' the County said in its news release. City to activate rideshare hub by UTEP, Cincinnati Entertainment District
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Signage designating a new rideshare hub will be installed on Monday, June 9, on the 200 block of W. Baltimore Drive, near the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and the Cincinnati Entertainment District, the City of El Paso said in a news release. This initiative, which is part of the City's Social City Assessment Plan, was designed to improve public safety and expand transportation options in the Kern Place neighborhood, the City said. The City said the new rideshare hub is 'well-lit and equipped with security cameras, providing a safe and clearly designated location for rideshare and taxi services to pick up and drop off passengers.' The hub will be operational on Monday afternoon, immediately following the installation signage, the City said. The City said key benefits of the hub include: More organized and efficient passenger pick-ups and drop-offs; Reduced congestion caused by drivers circling the area or blocking traffic lanes; Enhanced safety through ride verification, helping riders ensure they are entering the correct vehicle. 'City officials encourage residents and visitors to begin using the Rideshare Hub, particularly those planning to attend the Coldplay concert at the Sun Bowl this weekend,' read the news release.
