'Terrorists Will...' Threat Graffiti On Puri Jagannath Temple Walls Sparks Panic In Odisha

Puri Police have started an investigation, with Puri SP Pinak Mishra saying efforts have been initiated to identify the suspects by scanning CCTV footage
Panic gripped residents of the holy city of Puri following threat messages on the walls of the Jagannath temple, raising serious security concerns for the famous 12th century shrine. The graffiti was spotted on the walls of the temple's southern Parikrama Marg.
Warning messages were seen on the temple wall near the Balisahi entrance of the Parikrama Prakalpa (heritage corridor), a popular route taken by devotees. The threats were written at two locations on the wall of the Budhi Maa Thakurani temple. Much to the alarm of locals and temple authorities, the prominent wall writings included phrases like 'Terrorists will destroy the temple'. The messages also mentioned multiple phone numbers with instructions to 'call". The miscreants also vandalised decorative lights installed in the area.
The defacement of the temple wall occurred in a high-security zone which is constantly under the scrutiny of CCTVs and security personnel.
Puri Police have started an investigation, with Puri SP Pinak Mishra saying efforts have been initiated to identify the suspects by scanning CCTV footage and ascertain their motive behind such a brazen act.
'We are taking this matter very seriously as it concerns the security of the temple. Our team, which visited the spot, has gathered several important pieces of information. Only after apprehending the culprit will we be able to say for what purpose it was written," Mishra said.
Responding to concerns about surveillance, the SP explained that although CCTV coverage is part of the Parikrama Project, installation is still pending in certain sections. 'We're currently checking if cameras were in place at the exact location of the incident. We've gathered some leads and are actively pursuing them," he said.
The incident has not just spread fear among locals but also stressed the immediate need for stepping up surveillance measures at one of the most revered sites in the country.
This is not a singular episode of the temple's security coming under threat. In the recent past, there were multiple cases of devotees entering the Srimandir premises with hidden spy cameras. A few youths had also scaled the temple walls to enter the premises, questioning the efficacy of the shrine's security apparatus.
Built in the 12th century AD, the temple draws pilgrims to the sacred town of Puri year-round from across the globe. Festivals such as Devasnana Purnima and Ratha Yatra are marked by vibrant celebrations and deep religious devotion.

Espionage case: Court extends YouTuber Jyoti Malhotras judicial custody

Hisar, Aug 18 (PTI) A local court on Monday extended by a week, the judicial custody of Hisar YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, who was arrested on suspicion of espionage in May. Judicial magistrate (first class) Sunil Kumar extended the judicial custody after Malhotra (33) virtually appeared in the court. Her lawyer Kumar Mukesh said next date of hearing was set on August 25. He said after three months of investigation the police filed the chargesheet in the case on August 14. Malhotra was directed to remain physically present on the next hearing, when she would also be handed over a copy of the chargesheet, he added. On May 16, Hisar Police arrested Malhotra, who ran a YouTube channel 'Travel with JO". The YouTuber, who hails from Hisar, was arrested at the New Aggarsain Extension and booked under provisions of the Official Secrets Act and BNS. A court rejected her regular bail plea on June 9 after the police opposed it and argued the investigation in the case was underway. Hisar Police previously said no evidence emerged to indicate Malhotra had access to any military or defence-related information, but claimed she was in contact with some persons and was aware they were Pakistani intelligence operatives. Police sources have said she was in touch with Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, a staffer in the Pakistani High Commission, since November 2023. India expelled Danish on May 13 for allegedly being involved in espionage. The police in May claimed Pakistani intelligence operatives were developing Malhotra as an 'asset". Diamonds worth Rs 25 crore stolen from Surat companys polishing unit

Surat, Aug 18 (PTI) Diamonds worth Rs 25 crore were stolen from a Surat-based polishing and export unit by unidentified thieves, who prised open a metal safe using a gas cutter to get hold of the precious gems, police said on Monday. The incident took place between August 15 and 17 at DK & Sons Diamond Company's office-cum-polishing unit in the Kapodra area of the Gujarat city during which CCTV cameras were vandalised, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Alok Kumar. Since the company had declared a three-day holiday in view of Independence Day and Janmashatmi, neither employees nor security guards were present at the unit when the diamonds were stolen, he said. 'Taking advantage of the situation, thieves first broke the main door of the office on the ground floor of the company's building and then went on the third floor where a metal safe was kept. The safe was then cut open using a gas cutter," said Kumar. The diamond unit owner learnt about the theft when he reached the office on Monday morning after a gap of three days. 'As per a primary estimate, thieves decamped with diamonds worth Rs 25 crore. They also vandalised CCTV cameras and stole the video recorder in an attempt to destroy evidence," said the DCP, adding efforts were on to nab the culprits.
