Forget to pack one thing and your holiday could be 'ruined', warns expert
While casual dining is common in the UK, dress code standards can be stricter in popular EU cities. For that reason, holidaymakers can find themselves turned away from bars and restaurants for failing to dress appropriately.
The footwear expert at A Fine Pair of Shoes, Julian Nelson, is warning travellers to pack appropriately to avoid disappointment. According to him, everything starts with packing the right footwear options.
Even if you have packed your airport-appropriate trainers or comfortable slides, Julian says you need a 'smart-casual' option on hand when travelling to certain cities. It comes after an Airbnb host rejected a duo's booking after learning where in the UK they're from.
"Restaurants and rooftop bars in places like Barcelona, Dubai, or even the Greek Islands often have strict dress codes, and they're not letting men in wearing gym shoes or beach sandals," he says.
In places like Dubai and Turkey, bars and restaurants are notorious for requiring 'closed-toe shoes' for men. In one TripAdvisor thread about wearing open-toe shoes around Dubai, a commenter wrote: 'Generally it's fine, but upmarket places like [Jumeirah Burj Al Arab] will have a dress code so it's best to check in advance.'
The commenter suggested calling or emailing ahead to clarify the ' Smart Casual ' dress code and noted that it only seemed to apply to me. 'Ladies should be fine in nice sandals…not flip flips'.
Another commenter speaking on Dubai's dress codes clarified that while it is fine to dress more casually, most residents tend to dress up. 'You will find that many Dubaians tend to dress up even for going to the mall. In fact, there are some sections at Dubai Mall that resemble a catwalk more than shopping mall hallways.
'Nonetheless, you will find people dressed in all sorts of styles, casual, middle of the road, etc.'
Julian warns that cruise ships also enforce dress codes that sometimes catch travellers off guard. 'Cruise lines often have dress policies buried in their websites. Many specify that trainers aren't allowed in the evenings, even just walking around the ship or dining in restaurants."
P&O, Royal Caribbean, and MSC Cruises all have 'smart evening' rules, which typically exclude sandals and trainers for men. P&O Cruises specifies that in the evening guests should opt for their 'favourite 'going out' shirt, paired with smart shoes'.
Julian says a simple loafer or smart slip-on is lightweight and easy to pack, but can 'save your evening'. 'If you're planning on going for a nice meal to end the holiday, or want to try out some cocktail bars in your nearest city, you don't want to be turned away.'
He recommends travellers pack using a 'three-shoe rule': one pair for walking and daytime exploring; one smart option for the evenings; and one lightweight pair like slides for the pool or beach.

Mum trades her busy UK life to live in luxury in huge villa in Spain with a pool and private gym - and saved £100k in the process
A British mother has revealed how she and her family uprooted their lives in the UK to move to a spacious villa in Spain with a pool and gym - and reduced their cost of living by thousands. Bridie moved abroad with her husband, two teenagers, three dogs and cat five months ago - and says their new 'huge' home cost £100,000 less than her property back home. The project coordinator has been sharing her and her family's transition from Essex to the sunny Mediterranean holiday hot spot n social media, leaving viewers stunned. She gave a virtual tour of her palatial new abode in the port city of Alicante on TikTok. Starting at the front door, Bridie entered a huge living area, then went through to the bedrooms, many of which had their own en-suite bathroom. She then showed off the roomy dining area and Spanish-style kitchen that led out to the massive garden with fruit trees and sweeping mountain views. The lavish home sits on a large plot of land, acres away from neighbours, offering privacy and quietness. Outside, the property has an enormous garage as well as a pool, a vast lawn and a pool house with another bedroom and bathroom. Bridie said she and her family viewed 18 houses before falling in love with the one they ended up buying. The mother revealed that the family plan on doing renovations to the house and garden to add another en-suite inside and a games room, fire pit, outdoor kitchen and gym to the garden. Viewers were wowed by the incredible home and garden, with many expressing their jealousy. 'It's lovely, so much space and seems a peaceful location,' one user said. 'Absolutely beautiful. A total dream. This is what I wish for,' another wrote. 'Well done. Renovations can be done in your own time. Most importantly, you're all out there. Much better environment for all the family and friendly people too,' a third replied. 'Sooooo much property and land for your money over there. You can see why so many people do it,' someone added. In the UK, Bridie lived with her family in Essex in a four-bedroom house with stunning views. Bridie said she and her family viewed 18 houses before falling in love with the one they ended up buying She said the house was 'perfect', but she didn't like having to work hours on end to afford the mortgage. 'Back in the UK, you feel like you're just working to pay the bills, so the reason we sold it was to be able to move over to Spain and buy a cheaper house to get rid of the mortgage and have less outgoing,' she explained. 'Believe it or not, this home sold for £100k more than what our Spanish home cost us, therefore less outgoings all round. 'And yes, it's big but you get a hell of a lot more for your money in Spain compared to the UK.' The expat said while she loved her British home, she was inspired to move to somewhere sunnier as she 'dreamt' of a life where she could work less and spend more time with her family. 'UK weather is not always sunny, we get a hell of a lot of rain and I wanted to be able to be outside more, enjoying the sunshine in Spain,' she added. Bridie said she was able to get a digital nomad visa to live and work in Spain, and it took two and a half years of planning. The Briton explained the visa lasts up to three years, after which she will reapply for another two years before getting full residency. 'We always knew we wanted to move abroad, but the time was never right, but when is the time ever right?' she said. 'The whole process of moving to Spain took about two and a half years. It's not easy to move from the UK to Spain; there are lots of different visas. 'We went down the digital nomad route because my job is all online-based, I do project coordination for a company back in the UK.' She added that her job involves organising events like fitness classes for the business and that she was going to the classes herself six days a week while in the UK - but she has chosen to live a slower life now that she's in Spain. 'I do feel like I have a lot of spare time now that I'm out here, it's very quiet, it's very relaxed,' Bridie admitted. She recommended that those who want to do the same move to join Facebook groups to get information and advice from people who have been through the process themselves.

Hot air balloon crashes into primary school roof
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video People had a narrow escape when their hot air balloon almost tipped over in Bristol. The hot air balloon ride turned into a nightmare when it smashed into a primary school during the first day of the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. Footage shows several balloons gliding in the sky as part of the jamboree this morning. Suddenly, one of them begins descending rapidly towards the Oasis Academy Connaught in the Knowle West neighbourhood at about 7.11am. The basket then collides with the sloped roof, tipping dangerously to one side as the force of the balloon pulls it along. The pilot releases more hot air, which helps to straighten the balloon and makes it glide back and over the building. Worried onlookers thought passengers were going to fall out. Resident Stephanie, 22, a lash technician, who captured the moment, said: 'I thought 'that one is looking a bit low' and pressed record. 'The basket was tilting – it looked like they were going to fall out. More Trending 'It must have been scary.' The Bristol Balloon Fiesta is a free,three-day event that runs until Sunday, with hundreds of balloons taking off. The near-miss incident comes after two hot air balloons with tourists fell to the ground in Turkey. At least a dozen people were injured and one person died when the tourist balloons crashed in June. British woman moves to China and can't get over nine big career perks
A young British woman insists people should move to China as she has been wowed by her new way of life living in Shanghai – and she pointed out nine positive changes Moving to a new city or country can be an exciting and fulfilling adventure, but it can also be daunting leaving behind the life that you are used to. However, often people who move abroad find that they prefer it. And one of these expats is Luka Larkin. It was the young woman's 2025 goal to move to China – and last month she made it happen. She flew from Manchester to Shanghai on a 13 hour flight and began her new life living in an apartment in the city. She now works as a pharmacist close by to the stunning Oriental Pearl Tower. The Brit has since opened up about her new life after moving to China, which she says "beats the UK by a mile". On her TikTok page, Luka gushed she feels "so lucky" after making the move. So here are eight of her observations about the new work culture she is experiencing... 1. Employers provide food Luka said: "All food is free, it's normal for employers to give free lunch in China. If you have leftover lunch money, you can use it for snacks." 2. Napping isn't frowned upon The British expat explained: "It's normal to sleep in the office at lunch time." 3. It's high-tech Luka revealed many offices have temperature readers when you arrive, which can help to detect who is ill. This should help to stop sickness spreading to further employees. 4. Great amenities Luka's office has some brilliant facilities. She said: "The office has two gyms and a yoga studio that offers daily classes." 5. Relaxing areas It's not all fitness and productivity either – as there's even a room to unwind. The employee shared a picture of a "library room with a water fountain", which looks like a seriously nice place to relax. 6. Massages Speaking of relaxing, there are massage chairs available for workers to use. Plus, Luka added: "We also get a free 15 minute physio massage every week." 7. Less childcare costs Luka revealed: "Employees with children are allowed to bring them in during summer holidays!" 8. Nice views If you're working in cities like Shanghai, you're likely to get lovely cityscape views. From Luka's office, she can see iconic skyscrapers like the Pearl Tower. 9. Beautiful scenery everywhere It's not all corporate either – as Luka pointed out some lovely green spaces near her workplace. Fresh vegetables are being grown and there are plenty of pretty trees too. Reaction After looking through Luka's list, many took to the comments section to leave their thoughts. One viewer gushed: "I love working in China." Another wrote: "Wow China has it right! The napping on lunch would help so many people." A third said: "Ok I'm ready to work in China." A fourth argued: "Normalise sleeping in the office, I love this." A fifth wrote: "I love China. The work lunches are the most delicious things ever, I think about them every day."
