China paraglider's thundercloud survival claim featured likely AI-faked video
BEIJING/SYDNEY, June 1 (Reuters) - A Chinese paraglider's account of having been unwittingly swept into a thundercloud and dragged 8 km (5 miles) into the sky has come under question after his video of the incident, carried by Chinese state media, turned out to have been likely faked in part.
The video, originally posted after the paraglider's May 24 flight by his support team on Douyin, China's TikTok, employed artificial intelligence to fake some of the footage, according to a review by a digital security firm consulted by Reuters.
The video's opening showed Peng Yujiang, 55, among the clouds, his face encrusted with ice. The video, which caused a sensation in paragliding circles, was aired in China and distributed internationally by state-run broadcaster CCTV. Other news providers also distributed the video, which was picked up globally.
California-based digital security firm GetReal said it was 'fairly confident' the first five seconds of Peng Yujiang's video contained AI-generated images.
There are also inconsistencies noted by GetReal and paragliders who pored over the video: Peng's legs are initially dangling without the insulating cocoon shown later. His helmet is first white, then black.
Still, five expert paragliders interviewed by Reuters said it was possible Peng had flown to 8,589 metres (28,179 feet) as he claimed and survived. But four of them also challenged his claim that the flight had been an unavoidable accident, which Reuters is reporting for the first time.
The current record for a planned flight is held by French pilot Antoine Girard who flew 8,407 metres over a stretch of the Himalayas in 2021.
Peng recorded and then deleted his flight log on XContest, a website popular among paragliders, according to Jakub Havel, a Czech paraglider who helps run the forum. Havel said other flights by Peng remained on the site.
"Nobody intentionally lets themselves be sucked into a thunderstorm cloud in an attempt to break a record - it's something that any sane paragliding pilot tries to avoid at all costs," said Havel, who said Peng's flight should not be considered a record.
Peng could not be reached for comment. CCTV, which distributed the video on a platform owned by Reuters, could not be reached for comment.
Like other Chinese media, CCTV faces a pending regulation from Beijing that requires all AI-generated content to be labeled as such from September.
Contacted on the weekend, China's State Council, which oversees and coordinates government policy, had no immediate comment.
In a statement, Reuters said it had removed the CCTV package on Peng's flight from Reuters Connect, an online marketplace that carries material from more than 100 news organizations.
'This content is clearly labelled as third-party content and is not verified or endorsed by Reuters,' the statement said. 'When we became aware of a piece of content that likely contained AI-generated elements on the Reuters Connect platform, we investigated and took it down because the material does not comply with our partner content policy.'
STORM CLOUDS
In a report published on Wednesday, the Gansu Aeronautical Sports Association said Peng had broken an altitude record after being swept off the ground by a strong wind while testing second-hand gear he had just bought. 'According to Peng, he didn't plan on taking off,' the report said.
The association, a private group that oversees air sports in the province, did not respond to a request for comment. It deleted its report on Peng's flight from its WeChat account and by Thursday the association's website was blocked.
The association suspended Peng from flying for six months. A member of his flight team was suspended for six months for releasing the video without authorization.
Expert pilots interviewed by Reuters said there were reasons to doubt Peng's flight was a fluke accident, saying he was either trying to make an unauthorized high ascent or should have seen the risk.
Storm clouds like the one Peng flew in 'don't just appear above your head and hoover you into space. They build over a period of time,' said Daniel Wainwright, a flight instructor in Australia. 'He shouldn't have been flying.'
The specialized heavy mittens shown in the video seem to undercut Peng's claim he had not intended to take off, said Brad Harris, president of the Tasmanian Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association. He said he believed Peng may have made up the accidental take-off to avoid sanction for entering restricted air space.
'These are not things you would normally wear or have ready if you were just ground-handling to test a wing,' Harris said.
Godfrey Wenness, a former paragliding distance world record holder, said a veteran paraglider could have managed to reverse the extreme but manageable ascent shown in Peng's flight data.
'He was either inexperienced or he was trying to (keep climbing),' Wenness said.
Wenness said, however, he believed Peng hit the altitude he claimed based on flight data posted on XContest and then deleted.
That data has to be transferred from a GPS in a "tamper-proof" format, he said. "We conclude and are confident that the actual flight did occur," he said.

NRL star Angus Crichton cracks up Channel Nine's footy show panel by taking a VERY cheeky stab at the most feared man in the game Phil Gould
Roosters star Angus Crichton has taken a cheeky swipe at Bulldogs boss Phil Gould that left Channel Nine's footy show panelists and viewers in stitches. The Roosters have had a bumpy 2025 season following the departure of some big names, including Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Joey Manu and Joseph Sua'ali'i. The glamour club has also been depleted by ongoing injury setbacks and the recent loss of hooker Brandon Smith to Souths. Crichton, appearing on Monday night's 100% Footy, was asked by Gould about the 'drain' of players from the Roosters - and the Chooks star replied with what everyone was thinking. 'Angus, last year - Joey Manu, Sua'ali'i, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Luke Keary, Brandon Smith, Sam Walker, Sitili Tupouniua - it's a big drain on experienced talent isn't it?' Gould asked. Crichton replied: 'I know, somehow we still don't have any cash. And you guys keep signing everyone, so I don't know what's going on here. There needs to be an investigation.' The panelists erupted in laughter as Gould looked stunned. 'You're more than welcome here any time you want,' laughed co-host Paul Gallen. Footy fans watching at home also approved of the banter. 'That's my Wally Lewis medalist right there,' replied one X user. 'HA! Really threw Gus for a loop there. How good,' said another. 'Got him,' commented a third. Gould has recently been accused of misleading the public about the signing of young playmaker Lachlan Galvin. Galvin joined Canterbury after the Tigers agreed to give the 19-year-old an early release from his contract. The bombshell development occurred just a couple of weeks after Gould said his club had no intention of chasing Galvin. Gould has since stated that 'the goalposts shifted', referring to the Tigers backflipping on their earlier stance that they wouldn't release Galvin until his contract expired at the end of next season. On last Monday's episode of 100% Footy, the Bulldogs kingpin and rugby league journalist Michael Chammas had a heated exchange over the issue. The tense on-air clash saw Gould denying accusations that he misled the public about signing of Galvin. Following the fiery clash, reporter Phil Rothfield stated that Gould's reputation has taken a serious hit. 'I reckon he's been seriously damaged credibility wise and his reputation has been severely damaged at Channel 9 over this,' Rothfield said on the Off the Record podcast. 'I think the punters are awake to it and they are the lifeblood of every TV network that provides the ratings. I honestly think he's been badly damaged and people won't cop his bullsh** anymore.' 'Rugby league officials do lie and it's a fact we have to live with but when you are being paid nearly $1 million to sit on a (TV) panel, you are there to inform and say the truth.

Socceroos star Rhyan Grant lists his gorgeous $1.65million beachside pad in Bondi on the market
Socceroo Rhyan Grant is set to put his gorgeous Sydney beachside flat under the hammer later this month with hopes of a $1.65million sale. Located in North Bondi, the two-bedroom one-bathroom 'garden apartment' is a mere 900 metres from one of the world's most famous beaches. Positioned on the ground floor of a small block of five flats, Rhyan's two-story pad boasts an entertainment deck and stunning ocean views. No price guide has been included in the listing. However, The Daily Telegraph reported on Tuesday that agents behind the sale expect the 34-year-old Sydney FC captain could fetch as much $1.65 million for the spacious apartment. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Built across two-levels, the lower ground floor features the kitchen and main living areas that opens out to a private garden and alfresco dining area. The upper floor, meanwhile, is host to both bedrooms and features a balcony and study nook. Other highlights include a stone kitchen with mosaic tile splashback and an updated bathroom. It comes after Grant recently shut down any talk of retirement. After making his A-League debut in 2008 and chalking up over 300 career appearances for Sydney FC, the former Socceroos star has no plans to walk away just yet. 'I have a contract for next season, and I know I'll be 35, but the body feels great,' the veteran player told Daily Mail Australia in April. 'I'm keen to keep going, beyond that who knows....I would like to apply my knowledge from over the years, so coaching could be an option.' Grant's impressive career includes a stint with the Socceroos squad since 2018. He wowed fans in 2020 when he scored the winning goal in the grand final match between his Sydney FC side and Melbourne. Grant shares a 16-month-old daughter, Bobby Peach, with his partner Dani. Soon after welcoming his bundle of joy, the dynamic soccer star spoke about fatherhood. 'I've got a little girl who's a few months old, keeping me on my toes and giving me some sleepless nights, so that's been fun trying to navigate,' Grant shared on the Sydney FC site last year.
