Chris Glaisek, chief planning officer at Waterfront Toronto, explained the project seeks to 'heal the land from the way it was repurposed 100 years ago,' focusing on flood protection and ecological restoration. The work included digging a new river valley, creating wetlands, and constructing two river outlets to absorb excess stormwater.
Historically, the Don River's mouth was the Great Lakes' largest freshwater marsh, a vital resource for Indigenous communities before industrialization. By the late 19th century, much of the marsh was drained to make way for port facilities, leaving the river polluted and the area underused. 'It was really dirty, it was foul, it was terrible,' recalled Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow.
The urgency for flood protection grew after Hurricane Hazel devastated Toronto in 1954, killing 81 people. Glaisek noted that similar rainfall over the Don River would have caused comparable destruction. Climate change has since reinforced the need for resilient infrastructure.
The project, designed by US-based Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, not only mitigates flooding but also opens land for housing and recreation. Lead designer Laura Solano said the initiative was 'duty bound to address catastrophic flooding' but also offers 'much more,' including parks and waterways for kayaking.
Glaisek emphasized the importance of planning for nature's unpredictability. 'Let's acknowledge the river is going to flood. Let's build the space for it,' he said, referencing recent deadly floods in Texas. - AFP

Napoli's Osimhen completes 75mln euro move to Galatasaray
ISTANBUL: Napoli striker Victor Osimhen on Thursday completed his permanent move to Turkish champions Galatasaray in a 75 million euro (US$87.5 million) four-year deal. A key figure in Napoli's 2023 title triumph, Osimhen spent last season on loan at Galatasaray, scoring 26 goals in 30 league games as the Istanbul club claimed their 25th Super Lig crown. He was absent as Napoli, the freshly crowned Serie A champions, resumed training at the start of the week as the finer details of the deal were concluded. Napoli coach Antonio Conte seemingly did not have the 26-year-old in his plans for his side's Scudetto defence next term. Negotiations with Galatasaray had been ongoing for several weeks but up to Thursday had stalled over the terms of payment for the transfer. Napoli recently recruited Kevin De Bruyne from Premier League club Manchester City.

Reddit forecasts strong revenue on AI-driven ad strength, shares surge
(Reuters) -Reddit forecast third-quarter revenue above Wall Street estimates on Thursday, betting on growing digital advertising driven by its artificial intelligence-powered marketing tools. Shares of the company, which went public in March last year, rose more than 10% in extended trading. The forecast follows bigger rival Meta's upbeat second-quarter results and strong revenue outlook on Wednesday, lifted by the Facebook and Instagram parent's core ad business. Advertisers are increasingly turning to platforms such as Reddit, Meta, and TikTok, which offer advanced AI-powered tools for automated ad creation, precise audience targeting and access to fast-growing user bases. Reddit offers marketers various ad formats, including conversation placement ads, which allow brands to advertise directly within discussion threads in its interest-based communities known as subreddits. The San Francisco, California-based company last month launched two new AI-powered ad features designed to help brands drive engagement by tapping into user conversations on the platform. "Reddit just turned in a quarter that would make even its harshest subreddit proud," Emarketer analyst Jeremy Goldman said. The company expects third-quarter revenue of $535 million to $545 million, well above analysts' average estimate of $473 million, according to data compiled by LSEG. It projected quarterly adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization of $185 million to $195 million, compared with estimates of $160.4 million. Second quarter revenue rose 78% to $500 million, beating estimates of $426 million. Its profit came in at 45 cents per share, topping expectations of 19 cents. Reddit said its machine translation feature now supports 23 languages, helping fuel user growth across Asia Pacific, Europe and Latin America. Daily active unique visitors increased 21% to 110.4 million in the quarter ended June 30, while global average revenue per user jumped 47% to $4.53, the company said. Hydrogen projects to lift demand for insurance
Your browser does not support the audio element. KUALA LUMPUR: Insurers expect greater demand for its services from hydrogen fuel players as investments into the sector surge in the next few decades. A report by the Hydrogen Council and international consultancy firm McKinsey said more than 60 countries, including Malaysia, had introduced hydrogen strategies and the number of planned projects worldwide had jumped from 200 in 2021 to more than 1,500 today. Europe leads the charge, with 617 projects and US$199 billion in announced investments. The report noted that realising these initiatives could require up to US$680 billion in investment by 2030. However, the report noted that hydrogen faced considerable hurdles. Reducing infrastructure costs is essential to ensure hydrogen can be competitive with other energy sources. At the same time, stringent safety standards must be enforced to mitigate hazards such as fire and explosion. As hydrogen becomes integrated into the global economy, insurers can expect to see a significant increase in demand for coverage, with Allianz Commercial expecting the insurance market for hydrogen project coverage to grow to over US$3 billion in premiums by 2030. "Insurers have a key role to play in the development of the hydrogen economy, enabling investment and innovation, and providing risk management advice and guidance. "Collaboration and knowledge-sharing within this industry are essential for developing best practices and building expertise," said Anthony Vassallo, global head of natural resources at Allianz Commercial. Vassallo added that energy, natural resources and liability lines were likely to be most impacted by hydrogen-related risks over the next five to 10 years, followed by property and marine insurance. Hydrogen has long been used in chemical industries, but its expansion into new sectors — including transportation and energy generation — requires a substantial upgrade in risk management strategies. Hydrogen storage, high-temperature combustion, fuel cell vehicle usage and cryogenic fuel handling all bring significant safety challenges. "Hydrogen holds significant promise in driving the energy transition across the Asia-Pacific region, and we are already seeing power generation projects being developed that are designed to run with hydrogen as a potential fuel source. "Further collaboration between countries can also be expected in areas such as storage and transportation infrastructure that will help to accelerate the deployment of hydrogen in the region," said Trent Cannings, regional head of natural resources and construction and head of speciality hub at Allianz Commercial Asia Pacific. Cannings said the implications for insurance could be far-reaching, touching on multiple sectors and lines of business over the next decade.
