Car dealership with over 90,000 vehicles to close in weeks

Daily Mail05-05-2025

A large car dealership which has more than 91,000 vehicles currently on sale is set to close within weeks, leaving hundreds of employees vulnerable. German online used car marketplace Heycar, founded in 2017 and later launched in the UK in 2019, had initially set its sights on rivaling Auto Trader and Motors, but experienced a loss of £30million in 2022, followed by a £22.4million loss in 2023.
Its latest annual report indicated that the firm had even seen its revenue decrease to just £7.4million. Now, its once majority shareholders, Volkswagen Financial Services (VWFS), have withdrawn from the business, leaving its more than 126 employees in the UK, Germany and France all at risk.
As a result, the firm is expected to close in Germany in the next couple of weeks, with the UK set to follow shortly after. Volkswagen Financial Services (VWFS) had initially acted as the company's largest shareholder at 78 per cent, followed by Volkswagen at 13 per cent and Renault at 9 per cent. Some reports even suggested that VWFS had invested more than £205million in the marketplace since its launch, according to Car Dealer Magazine.
Described on their website as 'the place to buy your next car the feel good way' and designed 'with car buyers in mind', the dealership, which sought to focus on younger used cars and provide greater backing for buyers, was described by a VWFS spokesperson as 'a pioneer in the online used car marketplace'. Former CEO Matt Moakes previously declared: 'Other online listings businesses are just digital versions of newspaper ads. That's not Heycar.
'We have features and products that improve the experience whether you're a dealer or a consumer, the latest of which includes our worry-free back guarantee, and our new Concierge service which helps car buyers take the stress and inconvenience out of car ownership.' But now, the VWFS spokesperson has confirmed to Car Dealer that the company 'expect we will have to let go of a large proportion of Heycar's employees'.
They are, however, set to launch a 'new subsidiary' that they hoped would 'integrate the technology developed by Heycar' into its wider business. They added: 'We are considering whether some of the UK employees could be taken on by VWFS UK to further expand the used car business in the B2B sector.
'Despite the decision to wind down their operations, the valuable insights and digital solutions developed so far will play a crucial role in the future of VWFS UK, as we continue to explore new ways to drive growth and innovation in the automotive e-commerce space.' Heycar and VWFS were both contacted for comment.

Aldi's Scottish gin under £20 named 'best in the world' at awards ceremony

The Scottish-made gin wowed a panel of expert judges with its "elegant" and "classic" flavour profile. Aldi's Còmhla Scottish Gin has been something of a trailblazer. Since its launch a couple of years ago, it has racked up multiple awards and glowing praise. And now it has another win under its belt, as the budget-friendly tipple has just taking home the coveted title as the World's Best Classic Gin at the prestigious World Gin Awards 2025. ‌ The acclaimed awards ceremony recognises the very best of the best across a range of lucrative brands, with the German discounter's gin beating out tough competition from over 20 countries including USA, Germany and China. ‌ Retailing at a humble £19.99 for a 70cl bottle, the Còmhla Scottish Gin ensures that gin lovers and shoppers will be able to bag premium quality at an affordable price. After a rigorous blind tasting of hundreds of entries across the globe, Aldi's Scottish-made London dry gin managed to wow the expert judging panel with its "elegant" and "classic" flavour profile. The World Gin Awards' description for Aldi's win read: "This gin presents a shy yet clean nose with a hint of dusty elegance and a subtle woody note reminiscent of moss. On the palate, it showcases a classic blend of juniper, coriander, and citrus, accompanied by chilli heat and slight bitterness. While the flavours are complex, they lack full integration, leading to a balanced yet somewhat short and dry finish." Aldi's Còmhla is a classic London dry gin that is crafted in small batches, boasting a well-balanced blend of notes including juniper, coriander and citrus, rounded off with a hint of bitterness. ‌ Despite only being launched in 2023, it has already been the subject of significant praise from experts, scooping prizes for its quality and flavour profile and multiple prestigious ceremonies. The Scottish-made gin previously bagged the coveted 'Gold' award in the 'premium' Gin Masters category of the 2024 Spirits Business Awards, a ceremony championed by leading spirits specialists. ‌ Before it managed to nab the most recent title as "the best in the world", it was previously named "the best in the country" at the 2025 World Drink Awards. Graham Nicolson, Group Buying Director at Aldi Scotland, said: "We have had an incredible response for Còmhla both from our loyal customers and the wider drinks industry. To be named the Best Classic Gin in the world is the ultimate honour. "Scotland may be small, but we consistently punch above our weight on the world food and drink stage. To be able to compete at such as high standard and to win, is testament to the craftsmanship and skill of our homegrown suppliers, and to the strength of the longstanding partnerships we have formed with them." ‌ Aldi's Còmhla Scottish Gin joins a cabinet of award-winning tipples that can be purchased from Aldi, as the supermarket's Haysmith's Seville Orange & Persian Lime Gin was also voted 'Best in the County' at the same gin awards ceremony in 2024. Costing just £14.99 for a 70cl, this trendy, citrus-based drink isn't just an award-winner, but it is also 46 percent cheaper than Tanqueray's popular Flor De Sevilla Orange which it has been compared to. Aldi's best in the world Còmhla Scottish Gin(70cl) retails at £19.99 and can be bought in all 109 stores across Scotland.

Leroy Sane's staggering salary demands sheds light on Arsenal transfer failure

Germany star Leroy Sane was linked with a free transfer to Arsenal earlier in the transfer window but will instead earn an eye-watering sum at new club Galatasaray The staggering wages Galatasaray are paying Leroy Sane have come to light. Arsenal had been linked with a move to bring the Germany international back to the Premier League, but instead he is off to Istanbul on a three-year deal. Gunners manager Mikel Arteta worked with Sane at previous club Manchester City before he left to join Bayern Munich in 2020. Any suggestions that might give Arsenal an advantage were soon put to bed, though, and Galatasaray's spending power may well be a factor. ‌ According to a club announcement, Sane will take home a huge £10.2million per season after tax - £7.65m basic and a £2.55m net loyalty bonus each year. The Mail reports that the same post-tax amount in England would be the equivalent of £410,000 per week. ‌ Such a sum would make him far and away Arsenal's highest earner, and the second highest-paid player in the Premier League behind Erling Haaland. Even Mohamed Salah, who signed a bumper new Liverpool deal in April, isn't thought to make that much. Sane had been named in Bayern Munich's squad for the Club World Cup, with a view to featuring in the competition. However, he left to undergo a medical in Istanbul on Thursday before completing the switch. Sane has spoken of the impact of fellow Germany international Kerem Demirbay in convincing him to move to Istanbul. He is the third new arrival this summer, with Ismail Jakobs and Przemyslaw Frankowski both completing permanent moves after spending time at the club on loan last term. 'It is a great honor for me to be here and to sign here. I would like to thank the club for giving me this opportunity," Sane said upon his unveiling. "I have come to the biggest club in Türkiye. I can't wait to give everything I have for this club and achieve success in this team. I can't wait to meet with the fans.' He continued: "I spoke to Kerem and he was incredibly happy that I was coming here. He told me that I would be coming to a great club, great people, great fans and a great country. He told me how happy he was and how happy I would be too. I can't wait to meet him as soon as possible." ‌ Sane will take the number 10 shirt previously worn by Belgium star Dries Mertens. 'Dries Mertens was a great player, a very important player. I want to achieve those successes with his number. I want to bring luck to Galatasaray with this number," the German said. "Frankly, I am aware of the previous images, I know all of them. I have been following them on social media. I was still very surprised. When you stand there and experience that, you feel very different emotions. I thank them very much. It was a truly extraordinary feeling. Therefore, my biggest wish is to get on the field as soon as possible and achieve success with the fans." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Florian Wirtz transfer details as Liverpool agree record deal to sign top target

Liverpool have finally agreed a deal with Bayer Leverkusen to sign Florian Wirtz in a British-record deal that will see the 22-year-old German head to Anfield this summer Liverpool will smash the British transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz after agreeing a £116m to sign the Germany star. The Reds will pay £100m upfront to Bayer Leverkusen with the rest due in add-ons which are linked to both the individual success of the player and the team. Wirtz, 22, will now be given the green light to travel to Merseyside to undergo a medical and complete the formalities of a long-term contract. ‌ Liverpool have committed to pay £100m guaranteed. That is a huge figure and more than the club has ever paid for a single player even including add-ons. But the overall cost of the deal will surpass the £115m which Chelsea paid Brighton for Moises Caicedo in 2023. ‌ That shows the belief within Anfield for the ability of the Germany international both now and in the future with those who have watched him intently sure there's still huge scope for improvement for a player who had 30 goal contributions last season. Wirtz wanted only to move to Merseyside after turning down advances from Manchester City and Bayern Munich which surprised many. Liverpool were never prepared to match the £127m (€150m) Leverkusen were keen to get. But a compromise has been worked out between Reds sporting director Richard Hughes and his counterpart at Leverkusen, Simon Rolfes. There has been consistent dialogue between the two clubs since last week when the Reds tabled an offer worth around £114m. But Liverpool have had to up their offer by a further £2m to get the deal done. The deal for Wirtz was the most Liverpool have ever offered for a single player in their history and it will smash their transfer record of £85m (including add-ons) for Darwin Nunez, who they signed from Benfica in 2022. The finer details of that include what Wirtz and Liverpool must achieve during the course of his contract at Liverpool to trigger the payments over £100m were finalised late on Thursday night. The £100m will be guaranteed but, like any modern deal, will be paid in instalments over a number of years while the add-ons will then be paid as and when they are triggered. ‌ It's a complex and complicated deal but nothing out of the ordinary for a player so highly-sought after and a financial package so eye-watering. The transfer window is now closed again until next week but deals can still be agreed and medicals done. The deal will be made official next week. Liverpool's spending this summer is set to go north of £200m as they look to land Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, who are holding out for £45m. Jeremie Frimpong has already been signed from Leverkusen for £29.5m Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is arriving from Valencia for around £30m after spending last season on loan with the La Liga club.
