Peter Lovenkrands on why he left Rangers for Schalke

Glasgow Times25-06-2025
The Danish footballer, who was a fan favourite at Ibrox, left for Schalke on a free transfer in 2006.
He had just finished a successful season, scoring 18 goals, including four in the Champions League.
Despite his impressive performance, Lovenkrands said he was given no indication that he was wanted at the club.
He said on Open Goal: "When I was leaving, I got a phone call.
"David Murray brings me up to the office and basically says, 'Le Guen is on the phone, wants to talk to you'.

"And I went, 'right, okay'.
"So I've got the phone, and he basically said to me, 'if you stay, great, if you don't, I'll just get someone else'.
"And I'll never forget that sentence.
"It was like, 'I've just scored four goals in the Champions League, 18 goals in the season, and you don't want me to stay?
"There was no 'we want you to stay', or whatever, to try and convince you to stay.
"It was literally like a hit in the stomach.
"If you stay - great. If you don't - I'll just get someone else" @lovenkrands11 on the conversation with incoming @RangersFC Manager Paul Le Guen that decided his exit from Ibrox.

"It was like 'okay, I don't like this.
"It doesn't need to sound like he wants me to stay'."
Lovenkrands revealed that even after agreeing a deal with Schalke, he gave ex-chief executive Martin Bain a chance to make him stay.
However, he claimed he was stonewalled again.
The Dane said: "I agreed the deal but I had to go and do my medical.
"Went across to the hospital, done my medical.
"On my way back from the medical to sign the deal, I phoned Martin Bain and said 'That's me just done my medical at Schalke, I'm away to sign the deal.
"Is there anything you want to say to me?
"He was like 'good luck'.
"If he'd said 'we'll match it' or 'we'll offer you this', I would have went straight on the plane back.
"But he just said 'good luck' and that was it."
During his time at Rangers, the left-footed attacker, who could play wide or centrally, was a big favourite at the club and scored several important goals.

Nine tales of Rangers panic permeate the Hotline as Russell Martin hit with a claim he dreads from Celtic camp

Andy Newport takes your calls as Rangers fans are fearful over their huge Champions League tie Rangers avoided being stung by the Wasps on Saturday. ‌ But the Ibrox faithful aren't exactly buzzing with anticipation ahead of the Champions League showdown with Club Brugge. ‌ Russell Martin's team were expected to swarm Alloa in their Premier Sports Cup tie but it was another drab display that left some punters fearing the worst. ‌ Gordon Hendry, Ochiltree, said: 'As a Rangers fan I'm not sure why Russell Martin said he was pleased with most of the performance against Alloa. 'Without John Souttar in the backline, our central defenders were dire. Kieran Dowell continues to be a waste of space and Joe Rothwell can only pass the ball back and to the side and offers little in terms of creativity. 'However, on a more positive note, young Mikey Moore looks like a real player in the making.' Robert Pender added: 'I watched Arsenal and Manchester United both play out from the back at Old Trafford on Sunday but the difference from Rangers is that they both sprung quickly into the No10s or over the top at lightning speed. It didn't take them 10-plus passes only to go back and start again.' Robert Livingstone, Palm Beach, is also concerned - but is hoping for an upturn against the Belgians: 'It hasn't been a good start in league but when Rangers play European games at Ibrox, they do raise their game. 'Hopefully we should do it again against Brugge. If they can win by at least two goals, it gives us every chance in Belgium of going through to the Champions League proper. ‌ 'That would be a huge financial boost for the club and give our loyal fans something to look forward to. Let's hope they can do it.' But across the city, the Celtic faithful aren't so sure. Kenny Wison, Moffat, said: 'Two weeks ago we were told Rangers were back and going to win the league easily against an average Celtic team. 'Two games later, Russell Martin is useless and this is the worst Rangers team ever. ‌ 'Every season is the same script and we can always rely on them to cheer us up on here. As we say, it's the hope that kills them.' Celtic fan Bud Hay, Dumfries, added: 'As I said weeks ago, Martin is yet the latest manager to be flung onto the Ibrox scrap heap. 'I can't wait until we beat them at Ibrox and Club Brugge punt you down to the Europa League.' ‌ Scott McAdam, Glasgow, emailed in: 'That's two weeks in a row that Rangers have needed help with dodgy penalties to get a result. 'Funny, we are not hearing moaning about refs from you-know-who. But once they face Hibs, it will be another trophy that's disappeared. That defence can't keep wains out of a close.' Glen Mitchell said: 'All this bickering between Celtic and Ibrox fans is ridiculous. Just state the facts as there are no clever or cynical answers to those. Trophy count is currently 120 to three, Celtic play in the Champions League and earn coefficient points there. 'The Ibrox club plays in the Europa League and gets its coefficient points there. Celtic are vastly more financially successful and light years ahead in that respect. Facts count, anything else is just smoke and mirrors.' Robert McEwan, Mount Vernon, said: 'I saw the cup draw and it's quite amazing the amount of times that Rangers have been handed a home draw down the years. I don't know if it's luck of the draw or merely compulsory that they play at Ibrox.'

Cocky ex-Club Brugge star's bullish statement over Rangers tie

Russell Martin's side host the Belgian giants in the first leg of their Champions League play-off on Tuesday before travelling for the second leg the week after. Brugge have sold a number of key players this summer but, despite being in a period of transition, Marc Degryse thinks they should have no issues against Rangers. In fact, he doesn't feel the club have any "serious" work to take care of until summer. Read more: Writing in his weekly column for HLN, he said: "Club Brugge lost Jutglà, De Cuyper, Talbi, and Jashari this summer. Ordóñez and Tzolis could potentially be added to that list. If that happens, that would be half a team. All of them were top players last season. "So far, Brugge has done well. Things have been going well this season, and Nicky Hayen is fortunate that some of his substitutions have paid off. Rangers shouldn't be a stumbling block either. But when the serious work starts in September, there's no escaping this squad. "The club absolutely needs to bring in reinforcements. Over €100 million has been invested. I think the board shouldn't just focus on young, forward-thinking players; they also need some experienced players who can be deployed immediately."

Rangers v Club Brugge injury news: 8 out and 3 doubts as Russell Martin sweats over key duo at Ibrox

Rangers will look to take a huge step towards qualification for the 2025/26 Champions League as they welcome Club Brugge in the first leg of the qualifying playoff at Ibrox on Tuesday (kick-off: 8pm). Russell Martin's side were able to get back to winning ways against Alloa Athletic in the Premier Sports Cup on Saturday evening, but were less than convincing as they defeated lower league opposition 4-2 thanks to goals from Nedim Bajrami, Emmanuel Fernandez, James Tavernier and Findlay Curtis. As for their visitors Club Brugge, they arrive in Govan on a high following their last-gasp victory over Zulte Waregem, with South African youngster Shandre Campbell bagging an injury-time goal to hand them a dramatic 1-0 win at the Elindus Arena.
