India reassures Nepali students after suicide sparked protest
Police have taken into custody a male student as they investigate Sunday's death at a women's hostel, said officials of the university in the state's capital of Bhubaneswar attended by more than 400 Nepali students.
"Nepali students studying in India form an important facet of enduring people-to-people links," the Indian embassy in Kathmandu, the capital of the neighbouring majority-Hindu nation, said on Monday.
"The government of India will continue to take all necessary steps to ensure the well-being of Nepali students in India," it added in its statement.
The assurance followed Monday's protests by students who had blocked a road for hours, which the university said had caused "inconvenience and escalating tensions".
Students shouted slogans and pushed through the gates of buildings in images on domestic media.
"Students have been requested to resume classes as soon as possible," Shradhanjali Nayak, a spokesperson for the university, the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, told Reuters. "The situation is quite under control."
The university, which has 40,000 enrollments a year, also withdrew an internal document urging all international students from Nepal to leave immediately.
The Nepali embassy in New Delhi, the Indian capital, said it had contacted university authorities and asked them to ensure the security and safety of Nepali students.
In a post on X, Nepal's Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli said two officers had been sent to counsel the students, with arrangements made to offer them the options of staying in their hostel or returning home.

Here are the main elements of the deal: * Almost all EU goods entering the U.S. will be subject to a 15% baseline tariff, including cars, which currently face 27.5%, as well as semiconductors and pharmaceuticals. The 15% tariff is the maximum tariff and is not added to any existing rates. * The U.S. is to announce the result of its 232 trade investigations in a few weeks and decide on tariff rates for the sectors under investigation. But the EU-U.S. deal already secures a 15% tariff for European chips and pharmaceuticals, so the results of the investigations will not change that, U.S. officials said. China unveils childcare subsidies in push to boost fertility
BEIJING, July 28 (Reuters) - China rolled out on Monday an annual childcare subsidy of 3,600 yuan ($502) until age three, as authorities look to spur a flagging birth rate with fewer young people choosing to have children. The high cost of childcare and education as well as job uncertainty and a slowing economy are among the concerns that have discouraged many young Chinese from getting married and starting a family. Subsidies will start from this year, with partial subsidies for those younger than three who were born prior to 2025, in a policy expected to benefit more than 20 million families of toddlers and infants, the official Xinhua news agency said. The plan was an "important national livelihood policy" and direct cash subsidies would help "reduce the cost of family childbirth and parenting", the National Health Commission said. China's population fell for a third consecutive year in 2024, with experts warning of a worsening downturn, after decades of falling birth rates following a one-child policy adopted from 1980 to 2015, coupled with rapid urbanisation. In the past two years provinces nationwide have started handing out childcare subsidies in amounts that vary considerably, from 1,000 yuan a child to up to 100,000 yuan, including housing subsidies. The central government will fund the new national policy instead of local authorities, Xinhua said. Authorities rolled out a series of "fertility friendly" measures in 2024 to tackle the coming decade's expected challenge of the entry into retirement of roughly 300 million people, equivalent to almost the entire U.S. population. A nationwide scheme may offer some coordination and signal greater central commitment, said demographer Emma Zhang, a professor at Yale University, but called for greater efforts. "Without sustained structural investment in areas like affordable childcare, parental leave, and job protections for women, the effect on fertility is likely to remain minimal," she added. Thai, Cambodian leaders agree to ceasefire after five days of battle
PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia, July 28 (Reuters) - The leaders of Cambodia and Thailand agreed to a ceasefire on Monday effective midnight, in a bid to bring an end to their deadliest conflict in more than a decade after five days of fierce fighting. Amid an international effort to quell the conflict, the Thai and Cambodian leaders held talks in Malaysia hosted by its Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the current chair of the ASEAN regional bloc, where both sides agreed to halt hostilities and resume direct communications. Anwar said when opening a press conference alongside the Thai and Cambodian leaders that there would be "an immediate and unconditional ceasefire with effect from midnight tonight. This is final." The Southeast Asian neighbours accuse each other of starting the fighting last week, before escalating it with heavy artillery bombardment and Thai air strikes along their 817-km (508-mile) land border. Anwar had proposed ceasefire talks soon after a long-running border dispute erupted into conflict on Thursday, and China and the United States also offered to assist in negotiations. U.S. President Donald Trump called both leaders at the weekend urging them to settle their differences, warning he would not conclude trade deals with them unless they ended the fighting. The tension between Thailand and Cambodia has intensified since the killing of a Cambodian soldier during a brief skirmish late in May. Both sides reinforced border troops amid a full-blown diplomatic crisis that brought Thailand's fragile coalition government to the brink of collapse.
