A Northfield family's search for their missing singing dog

A Northfield, Minnesota, family has been searching for their missing singing dog for eight weeks. Arrow, a New Guinea singing dog, took off on May 27, and the Nelsen family has been on the hunt for him ever since. Christaina Nelsen said there are roughly 200 to 300 singing dogs in the United States. They're a unique kind of wild dog, like a dingo. "What we've learned is that they were an ancient dog that came over with man, maybe thousands of years ago, across the ice bridge into New Guinea," said Buck Nelsen. "And then were basically just stranded there, and there's pockets of them still left there." The Nelsens say that since Arrow, the 1.5-year-old pup, took off, it's been a struggle. "But, you know, I think we still have faith that he's out there, he's alive, and we just want him home so he can be with us again and go camping, do all the things that we did before," said Buck Nelsen. The family says they're hoping to lure Arrow home. "If we can get close enough for him to hear some of this howling, maybe he'll be able to come to us," Devon Thomas Treadwell, founder of The Retrievers, said. The Retrievers is a volunteer group based in Minneapolis that helps people find their dogs. The Nelsens are hoping he comes home soon, as after eight weeks, they feel as if something is missing from their family. "It's still hard to think about him not being here," said Buck Nelsen. "The house is a lot quieter."

Southwest Airlines jet dives when collision alarms sound as a fighter jet crosses its path near Los Angeles

Federal agencies Airplane crashes FacebookTweetLink Alarms sounded in the cockpit of a Southwest Airlines jet shortly after taking off from Hollywood Burbank airport near Los Angeles on Friday, prompting evasive maneuvers, the airline said in a statement. Southwest Flight 1496, operating on a Boeing 737, took off just before noon local time on a short flight to Las Vegas. After less than six minutes in the air, a privately owned Hawker Hunter fighter jet, crossed less than two miles in front of it within a few hundred feet of its altitude, according to the flight tracking site Flightradar24. 'There was a small initial drop that I thought was just like really bad turbulence,' passenger Steve Ulasewicz told CNN. 'And then after that, there was this long free fall.' He describes being terrified, people screaming and pandemonium in the cabin. 'I definitely thought that the plane was going down, that there was a mechanical issue with it,' Ulasewicz said. Eventually the pilots got on the intercom and told the passengers they had to maneuver the plane to avoid the midair collision. 'The crew of Southwest Flight 1496 responded to two onboard traffic alerts Friday afternoon… requiring them to climb and descend to comply with the alerts,' said Lynn Lunsford, Southwest spokesman in a statement. 'Southwest is engaged with the Federal Aviation Administration to further understand the circumstances.' The fighter jet was flying from El Paso, Texas to Venture County Airport in Oxnard, California. The FAA is investigating. It's not clear if the aircraft were directed so close together or if one of them was in a location where they were not supposed to be. When the alarms sounded, the Southwest plane dropped about 475 feet and then went back up about 600 feet over the course of about a minute, according to Flightradar24. The fighter jet went up about 100 feet in just a few seconds. Two Southwest flight attendants are being treated for injuries, but no passengers were hurt, the airline said. The passenger jet did not declare an emergency and continued the 39-minute flight to Las Vegas, landing about nine minutes ahead of schedule. CNN has reached out to Hunter Aviation International, the registered owner of the fighter jet. Most commercial planes are equipped with a Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System, often called TCAS, which can direct pilots to climb or descended to avoid getting too close to other planes. TCAS works independently of ground air traffic control, searching nearby airspace using radio frequencies from transponders in other aircraft. CNN's Sarah Dewberry contributed to this report.

A tour of the food, fun and animals at the Fayette County Fair

For 70 years, tens of thousands of people have visited Fayette County each year for its county fair. The 10-day event kicked off on Thursday. Fair-goers can attend through Saturday, Aug. 2, and can enjoy the carnival rides, games, fair food and lots of entertainment. KDKA talked to a local vendor who has been offering specialty food for around 20 years. "You can get Italian sausage and sauce, cheesesteaks, meatball sandwiches, chicken parm. We make fresh dough daily for our pizzas," said Jim Cellurale of Marilyn's Italian Kitchen. As you get deeper into the grounds, there's a large area where 4-H is the focal point of the fair. "I have a camper, so I'm here 24/7. I get up early in the morning, feed your animal, bathe your animal, get them ready, and then have to wait around for the show," said Eli Wolf, who is involved in 4-H. In 4-H, kids complete hands-on projects in areas including health, science, agriculture and civic engagement. "4-H has taught me a lot of things, not just about animals, but also about teamwork and helping out each other, because it's really just like a giant community of people," Wolf said. He told KDKA he has shown goats for several years. "Unlike the carnival and stuff, these are projects done by kids as a family and as a community. So, I think that's really important that people come out and support this," Wolf said. "If you see every person here, they'll have a story to tell about how they've worked hard day and night coming out." Organizers said the roots of the fair surround the people and agriculture that's been embedded in Fayette County since the 1950s. "That has always been the base of our fair. From 4-H and even to open, we have exhibitors who are, they're adults, and they grew up in 4-H and then they are done with 4-H, aged out of 4-H, and then they're still doing it. I'm one of them," said Danielle Hansen, vice president of the fair board. Hansen touted that the fair in Fayette County is one of the biggest in the state., It's definitely something to be proud of here Fayette County," Hansen said. As a fair-goer, you can also head to the outdoor arena for the tractor pull, demolition derby and monster truck races. Hansen said there are also other entertainment options for families to enjoy. "This year, I have John Cassidy. He does comedy magic and things with balloons. We have a strong man act. He's an extreme strong man. And we have another circus act," Hansen said. "So, there's so many fun acts down there that a lot of people, I think, they're family acts, not just for little kids, or you know, adults, there's a lot of things that are offered in our family area."
