UP free bus travel scheme: Number of passengers expected to hit 75 lakh by midnight on Sunday
The Uttar Pradesh government's free bus travel scheme for women on Raksha Bandhan is expected to benefit 75 lakh passengers by Sunday midnight. UPSRTC anticipates that up to 70% of passengers will utilize the initiative, with numbers surging past 50 lakh in the first two days.
PTI The number of bus passengers is expected to hit 75 lakh by midnight on Sunday following the Uttar Pradesh government's free bus travel scheme for women on Raksha Bandhan. According to the Uttar Pradesh State Roadways Transport Corporation (UPSRTC), up to 70 per cent of the total passengers are expected to be availing the government's free travel initiative, the UP government said in a statement on Sunday.The Yogi Adityanath government has offered free travel to women in the state on Raksha Bandhan on UPSRTC buses from August 8 to 10. This facility is also being provided to a single co-traveller accompanying the woman.
UPSRTC MD Masoom Ali Sarwar said the buses usually carry 14 to15 lakh passengers every day, but in just the first two days of Raksha Bandhan, the numbers surged past 50 lakh. The 66-hour free travel 'Samman Ka Tohfa' offered by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during Raksha Bandhan started at 6 am on August 8. On August 8, 19.5 lakh passengers availed the free service, while 31.7 lakh passengers travelled on August 9, suggesting a spike of 210 per cent than the normal. By 12.50 pm on August 10, 13 lakh passengers had already travelled, and by midnight, this number is estimated to reach 25 lakh.
At major bus stations like Ghaziabad, Moradabad, Meerut, Bareilly, Lucknow, Saharanpur, Agra, Aligarh, Kanpur, and Etawah, special duty staff were deployed due to the large number of passengers.He also said that an incentive scheme for drivers and conductors has been implemented.Meanwhile, lakhs of women in the state who benefited from this facility thanked Chief Minister Adityanath for this "gift".Sandhya, traveling from Jhansi bus depot, said that the Yogi Adityanath government has taken a good step, making women feel positive.
At Moradabad bus depot, Jeetu said this initiative is benefiting millions of women and thanked the chief minister. PTI

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved Rs 5,801 crore for a new 11-km corridor of Lucknow Metro, which has been pending for over six years. The East-West Corridor with 12 stations – 7 underground and 5 elevated – will connect Charbagh to Vasant Kunj and cover the most densely populated Old City area of the state Capital. This metro network will not only ease traffic congestion on the narrow roads of the Old City of Lucknow, but will also provide smooth connectivity to places like Chowk and Aminabad and historical tourist destinations such as Bada and Chhota Imambaras, Rumi Darwaza, Clock Tower, and Moosa Bagh. Thanking the Prime Minister for approving the project, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the decision will not only streamline the Capital's traffic system, but also open new avenues for employment, tourism, and investment. 'The project will elevate Lucknow to new heights by expanding its economic, social, and business infrastructure,' he added. The project will be implemented by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), which is a joint venture of the Union government and the Uttar Pradesh government. The estimated time for completion of the new corridor is five years. Once operational, the new corridor, also called Phase-1B, will extend Lucknow's active Metro network to 34 km, linking key commercial hubs such as Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj, and Chowk. It will also improve access to major healthcare institutions like King George Medical University and old city areas known for their rich heritage and culinary culture. By easing congestion on the busiest routes of old Lucknow, the Metro will reduce travel time with improved connectivity to the Amausi airport, Charbagh railway station, and bus terminals. The 11.165-km corridor will comprise 4.286 km of elevated and 6.879 km of underground sections. It will integrate with the existing North-South Corridor (Phase 1-A) at Charbagh, which will function as an interchange station, facilitating seamless transfers for commuters between the two corridors. The stations on the new corridor are Charbagh (underground), Gautam Budh Road (underground), Aminabad (underground), Pandeyganj (underground), City Railway Station (underground), Medical Chauraha (underground), Chowk (underground), Thakurganj (elevated), Balaganj (elevated), Sarfarazganj (elevated), Moosabagh (elevated), and Vasant Kunj (elevated). 'This new corridor will strengthen access to Old Lucknow's rich cultural heritage, cuisine, tourism destinations, and employment hubs for those living in newer parts of the city,' said Sushil Kumar, the Managing Director of UPMRC Limited. A senior UPMRC official said the process of floating tenders will begin very soon. 'The UPMRC has already undertaken significant groundwork and compiled essential research data for the corridor,' the official said. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the East-West Corridor was approved by the Uttar Pradesh government in March 2024, while the clearance from the Network Planning was granted on July 9, 2024. It was recommended by the Public Investment Board in May 2025. As of now, the Phase 1-A or North-South Corridor of the Lucknow Metro is operational, connecting the CCS Airport to Munshi Pulia, a distance of 22.87km. The corridor started in 2019 and has a total of 21 stations.

It was severely damaged by a cyclone in 1964 and was fixed at the time. Rail traffic on the old Pamban bridge was suspended in December 2022 after cracks were noticed. It is India's first vertical lift railway sea bridge. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the bridge on April 6. The bridge carries a deep cultural significance. According to the Ramayana, the construction of Ram Setu was initiated from Dhanushkodi near Rameswaram. The bridge, linking Rameswaram to the mainland, stands as a remarkable feat of Indian engineering on the global stage. It is built at a cost of over Rs 550 crore. It is 2.08 km in length, features 99 spans and a 72.5-metre vertical lift span that rises up to a height of 17 metres, facilitating smooth movement of larger ships while ensuring seamless train operations, it said. Constructed with stainless steel reinforcement, high-grade protective paint, and fully welded joints, the bridge boasts increased durability and reduced maintenance needs. It is designed for dual rail tracks to accommodate future demands. A special polysiloxane coating protects it from corrosion, ensuring longevity in the harsh marine environment. Maharashtra state transport earns record revenue of Rs 137cr during Rakshabandhan festival
Mumbai: This year, due to Raksha Bandhan and the connected holidays, the state bus corporation earned Rs 137.37 crore from ST buses packed with passengers during the four days from August 8 to 11. Notably, on August 11 alone, the corporation earned Rs 39 crore from passenger transport in a single day. This is record revenue for the current financial year, an official said.
