'Law & Order' star Christopher Meloni says he's 'f---ing trying' to get Stabler and Benson to hook up
As much as Law & Order audiences want to see Christopher Meloni's Elliot Stabler and Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson get together, Meloni might want it more.
After a fan on X suggested Monday that, "for f--- sake, kiss her already," he replied, "I'm f---ing trying."
There has long been a will-they-won't-they vibe between the two characters in the beloved franchise. They two were partners for more than a decade on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and while Benson has stayed put, Stabler has moved to Law & Order: Organized Crime. However, they still communicate via appearances in one another's departments. They've come very close to becoming a couple, but they haven't actually gone there.
Not only Meloni but Hargitay, too, is hoping for that. But she just doesn't want it to happen just yet.
"Maybe on the last episode," she said in June on the Call Her Daddy podcast. "I think that's when they should be together... if it's right. We'll see when we get there."
The law enforcement officers are "soulmates, in a way," Hargitay said, adding, "But let's see where the story takes us, you know?"
Meloni himself has addressed a moment when the two nearly kissed in a season 24 episode of SVU that Stabler appeared on. That time, it was Benson who pulled away."We were attempting something," he said in April during a TVLine Spotlight conversation. "I don't think it worked. But I'm not going to tell you why it didn't work, because you all have your opinion," Meloni said, before adding, "I know what transpired."
In May 2024, Hargitay dished that the kiss was initially supposed to happen.
"To be honest with you, Chris and I thought it should go one way and the powers that be didn't, so it got changed at the last minute, that near kiss," Hargitay said in a May 2024 interview with Variety. "Obviously [creator] Dick [Wolf] gets final say. It's his show and he didn't want that."
While Meloni's Law & Order: Organized Crime wrapped up its fifth season last month, there will be plenty more Benson — and maybe some Stabler references or even encounters? — when L&O: SVU returns for its 27th season Sept. 25 on NBC.

Neon sets Oscar path for latest Cannes winner ‘The Secret Agent': Everything to know about the thriller
Could this be the next Anora for Neon? Brazilian political thriller The Secret Agent won four prizes at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival: writer-director Kleber Mendonça Filho won the FIPRESCI Prize, the AFCAE Art House Cinema Award, and Best Director, while star Wagner Moura won Best Actor. More from Gold Derby TIFF reveals its compelling documentary slate featuring Paula Deen, champion whistlers and balloonists 'Deliciously twisted,' 'murderously enjoyable': 'Wednesday' Season 2 reviews surpass Season 1 by double digits Neon picked it up for North American distribution at the festival, along with Palme d'Or winner It Was Just an Accident and second-place Grand Prix winner Sentimental Value, the latter of which is likely Neon's strongest awards contender this year (it's currently sitting at #2 in Gold Derby's combined odds for a Best Picture nomination). The independent distributor hopes to replicate the success it had with Anora, which went from taking Cannes' top prize to winning the Academy Award for Best Picture. The Secret Agent appears to be Neon's third-strongest contender coming out of the festival. Now, the company has set awards season release dates for the film. It will open in New York on Nov. 26, followed by a Los Angeles release on Dec. 5, with a national rollout to follow, per Variety. It is also set to screen at the New York Film Festival this fall. Neon is hoping The Secret Agent will continue its streak of turning Cannes hits into major award winners. Here's what to know about the film as its path comes into focus. What's it about? The Secret Agent is a political thriller set in the waning years of the Brazilian dictatorship. Moura plays a man trying to evade capture by government authorities. Critics describe it as a serious film with a mischievous sense of humor and a digressive narrative structure. Here's the film's official synopsis: 'Brazil, 1977. Marcelo, a technology expert in his early 40s, is on the run. He arrives in Recife during carnival week, hoping to reunite with his son but soon realizes that the city is far from being the non-violent refuge he seeks.' Who's in it? Moura — who is best known to American audiences for his roles as drug kingpin Pablo Escobar on Narcos, a performance that earned him a Golden Globe nomination in 2016, and as journalist Joel in Civil War — leads a cast that also includes Carlos Francisco, Tânia Maria, Robério Diógenes, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Gabriel Leone, and Udo Kier. What are its awards odds? The Secret Agent is a longshot contender for Best Picture. It's currently sitting at 15th in Gold Derby's nomination odds, but that relatively high ranking doesn't tell the whole story, as it's 18 percentage points behind #14, Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein. Mendonça Filho is in a similar position in Best Original Screenplay, as he's at #8 but 18 points behind the next contender. He's at #14 in Best Director odds, which puts him firmly outside of the ranks of top-tier contenders. The Secret Agent is a more likely contender in Best Actor and Best International Film. In addition to the Cannes win, Moura has earned the best reviews of his career for his performance. 'He's always been a good actor, but Mendonça Filho makes him a movie star,' The Hollywood Reporter's David Rooney wrote in his review of the film. Moura is currently sitting at #8 in the Best Actor odds, which in this race is within striking distance of the top five spots, especially if Neon pushes him hard. Gold Derby doesn't have Best International Film odds yet, but The Secret Agent is the third-ranked international film in Best Picture odds, behind Sentimental Value and It Was Just an Accident, which bodes well for its chances. Mel Gibson's 'Passion Of The Christ' Sequel Split Into Two Movies
One of the most anticipated sequel projects in Hollywood is the follow-up to Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ . Gibson is set to return as director for the sequel to his 2004 biblical epic which became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time for decades at the domestic box office until the release of Deadpool & Wolverine . Fans have been hearing plenty of chatter regarding the film's sequel, which was dubbed The Resurrection of the Christ , and details have been mixed regarding production start dates and release dates. Now we have a clearer idea regarding this timetable and when fans will be able to see not just one but two follow-ups to The Passion of the Christ . As shared below, Variety has confirmed that the two new films, titled The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One and The Resurrection of the Christ: Part Two , will both be released in 2027: '' The Resurrection of the Christ Part One ' is slated for Good Friday, March 26, while ' Part Two ' is set for 40 days later on Ascension Day, May 6. Lionsgate will release the films in theaters.' It's become a popular trend in recent years for a blockbuster-sized sequel to be split into more than one film – as we'll now seeing with the plans to continue The Passion of the Christ . While it certainly wasn't expected for Mel Gibson's follow-up to The Passion of the Christ , it does suggest that fans will get a rather extensive moviegoing experience for this long-awaited continuation. This lines up with Gibson's previous statements regarding how risky and ambitious the film is intended to be. Many details regarding the projects are still being kept under wraps, and now that there are two films on the way, it's likely that the secrecy will continue. Fortunately, with the short gap between releases, fans won't have long to wait after the first sequel's release to see the second. This should make some of the wait easier for those interested. Jim Caviezel is said to return as Jesus in the film. Randall Wallace and Gibson are both penning the follow-ups, and so we'll have to wait and see what other details will come our way moving towards the productions of both sequels, courtesy of Lionsgate. 'Devil Wears Prada 2' photos tease Anne Hathaway's possible love interest
Andy Sachs has officially left the "lumpy blue sweater" behind. Photos from the set of "The Devil Wears Prada 2" may offer some insight into the big-city life of Anne Hathaway's character two decades after the beloved original book adaptation came out on June 30, 2006. In photos captured Aug. 5 on the streets of Brooklyn, Hathaway, 42, is seen getting cozy with a new costar, "Colin from Accounts" actor/creator Patrick Brammall. Hathaway, whose character Andy is presumably out from under the thumb of "Runway" magazine overlord Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), dons a glittery blue, shin-length Rabanne dress from the designer's 2026 cruise collection. Perhaps an ode to the cerulean sweater that prompted Priestly's long-winded rant in the original film? That remains to be seen. It's unclear what character Brammall, 49, plays in the sequel. The Australian actor is married to "Colin from Accounts" costar and co-creator Harriet Dyer. In the first "Devil Wears Prada," Andy's love life is largely a casualty as her job as Priestly's second assistant takes precedence. She lives with her boyfriend, Nate (Adrian Grenier), but the two ultimately are unable to find middle ground as Andy develops an edge while working in the cutthroat fashion world. She also dabbles in a romance with journalist Christian Thompson (Simon Baker), which doesn't pan out. Details of the highly anticipated sequel are scant while it's in production, but fans have for weeks dissected the characters' fashion, as captured in paparazzi photos. "The Devil Wears Prada," based on the book of the same name, grossed more than $325 million at the worldwide box office and earned Streep an Academy Award nomination for best actress. 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' cast Among the returning stars are Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci. Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux and B.J. Novak flesh out the cast, according to Variety and People. Undoubtedly bringing comic relief, "Sex Lives of College Girls" actress Pauline Chalamet will also appear, according to the outlets. The film has also brought in Broadway talent, with "Maybe Happy Ending" star Helen J. Shen and "Oh, Mary!" actor Conrad Ricamora confirmed, per Variety. The halls of Runway won't be missing familiar faces, though. Tracie Thoms, who played Lily, Hathaway's best friend, will reprise her character, as will Tibor Feldman, who portrayed media executive Irv Ravitz. David Frankel, director of the original "Devil Wears Prada," is returning for the sequel, and the first movie's screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna, is writing the script. "The Devil Wears Prada 2" will give Hathaway the opportunity to revisit one of her most iconic early roles, 20 years later. The first movie hit theaters just five years after she made her film debut with 2001's "The Princess Diaries." When will 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' come out? "The Devil Wears Prada 2" is set for release on May 1, 2026. Contributing: Brendan Morrow and Anna Kaufman, USA TODAY
