Ireland men's and women's squads confirmed for Summer Series against Norway
One of the newest members of the women's squad for the games, which will be played at the National Basketball arena on Saturday July 26th, is forward Lucy Coogan, who has enjoyed an excellent junior season with Caldwell University in the USA, moving to 16th on their all-time scoring list on 1,130 points.
The Kilkenny native has been capped at every youth level, most recently with the Ireland U20 side a year ago. Guard's Erin Maguire, who has featured heavily on the FIBA 3x3 Women's World Series this summer and 21-year-old Maria Kealy from Donegal – another graduate of the Basketball Ireland Academy system – also earn their first call-ups.
32-year-old Lorraine Scanlon is rewarded for her role in helping Utility Trust St. Paul's to the Domino's Women's Super League Final this season with a call-up.
Elsewhere there's a recall for Annaliese Murphy and Enya Maguire who missed out on our most recent FIBA Women's EuroBasket qualifier against Latvia at the National Basketball Arena, while Edel Thornton will captain the side as she continues her return from injury.
'I'm really looking forward to getting back in camp with this group,' said head coach James Weldon.
'The Jysk Summer Series gives me a good chance to look at Lucy, Maria Erin and Lorraine – as well as others – against strong opponents in Norway.
"It's always great to introduce some new faces to the group and the energy that brings and with the draw for the next qualification campaign coming up later this month, these are really important games to set the tone for the coming months.'
New Ireland senior men's head coach Michael Bree has also selected four uncapped players amongst a 20 strong squad for the friendly against Norway.
His coaching staff of Paul Kelleher, Ciaran O'Sullivan, Colin O'Reilly and Shane O'Meara will take charge for the game, as Bree completes his contractual duties with Denmark before taking charge for the FIBA EuroBasket 2029 qualifying campaign later this Autumn.
Max Amadasun, Eoin Nelson, Jamie Muldowney and Sean Fitzpatrick are all in line for their first senior minutes after being included in the initial list.
Amadasun has just finished his senior season at Augusta University, with the 6'9 centre averaging a 16-point double-double, starting 29 games. 25 year-old Eoin Nelson is another who will bring size and rebounding to the group after an impressive season with UCD Marian, while Jamie Muldowney and Sean Fitzpatrick both make the step up from the U20 programme for the Jysk Summer Series.
Otherwise, there's a settled look to the squad, with all 12 of the players who lined out in Ireland's most recent FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifying win over Azerbaijan available for selection.
'It's an exciting time for both the new coaching staff and this talented group of players,' said lead coach Paul Kelleher.
'We've had some excellent results in the last qualifying campaign so now it's about building on that and this staff firmly believes that we have a group of players who are ready to bring Irish basketball to the next level.
"Norway are fantastic opponents to bring to the National Basketball Arena. They're preparing for the next round of FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers in August and have some top level talent, so we know they're going to be at the top of their game in Dublin.'
Ireland men's squad: Max Amadasun (Augusta University, USA), Eoin Nelson (UCD Marian), Neal Quinn (Aix Maurienne Savoie Basket, France), Sean Flood (Tartu, Estonia), Paul Dick (Killester BC), John Carroll (EJ Sligo All-Stars), Rapolas Buivydas (Garvey's Tralee Warriors), Jamie Muldowney (West Liberty College, USA), Conor Quinn (Belfast Star), James Hannigan (UCC Demons), Sean Fitzpatrick (Malahide BC), Sean Jenkins (Griffith College Éanna), Taiwo Badmus (Tindastoll, Iceland), Adrian O'Sullivan (Ballincollig BC), David Lehane (UCC Demons), Matt Treacy (Snaefell, Iceland) Sam Alajiki (Oral Roberts, USA), Jordan Blount (Flexachem KCYMS), James Gormley (Griffith College Éanna), Aidan Igiehon (Abbey Seals Dublin Lions).

Bernard O'Byrne calls for ‘immediate total suspension of Israel' from all European basketball competitions
In a letter to Jorge Garbajosa, seen by the Irish Independent, O'Byrne has requested that for 'FIBA Europe Board consider the immediate total suspension of Israel Basketball from all Fiba Europe participation until further notice in view of the genocidal actions of the Israeli state in Gaza as documented extensively by the United Nations and many other trusted international organisations and individuals.' O'Byrne is currently a member of the 25-person Fiba (International Basketball Federation) Europe board. His involvement comes after Basketball Ireland last week issued a statement expressing strong concerns over the ongoing crisis in Gaza, adding that it was considering withdrawing from the Fiba Women's EuroBasket 2027 qualifiers after being drawn in a group against Israel. 'The time has come for the Board of FIBA Europe to have a full and open discussion on the future participation of Israel Basketball in our competitions,' it says in O'Byrne's correspondence, dated July 30. 'The Board has been repeatedly told that the matter is under continuous review and that we are obliged to follow the lead of FIBA and indeed the International Olympic Committee. 'The result is that we as a governing body with a major public platform have effectively closed our eyes and passed the responsibility to others.' According to rule, should Ireland fail to participate in their first away qualifier against Israel, they could be subject to fines of up to €80,000. Failure to take part in their return fixture against Israel would summon a fine of up to €100,000 and removal from the Fiba Women's EuroBasket 2027 Qualifiers and the Fiba Women's EuroBasket 2029 Qualifiers. In his letter, O'Byrne clarifies that his views 'do not necessarily represent the views of my nominating federation', (Basketball Ireland), and that they were not consulted in advance of writing. 'This request is not to be construed as anti-Jew or antisemitic in any way,' he writes. 'This is a humanitarian issue for us all and we should not look away. We must ignore the niceties of sporting politics and deference to powerful people or organisations who threaten us.' O'Byrne, CEO of the FAI between 1996 and 2001, retired as CEO of Basketball Ireland in 2021. His stepping down was reported as a 'joint decision' between O'Byrne and Basketball Ireland, coming in the wake of a controversial social media post, which he said was an 'extremely ill-judged attempt at humour' and for which he apologised at the time. Basketball Ireland are understood to be currently considering their options with regard to the game with Israel, scheduled for November 18.

Sarah Hickey the star as Ireland women overcome Norway
Ireland 78 Norway 63 Sarah Hickey led the way as Ireland's women's basketball team took an impressive win over a Norway side 14 places above them in the world rankings. The first quarter of this JYSK Summer Series clash at the National Basketball Arena got off to a lively start, with both sides showing plenty of energy on both ends of the floor. Ireland's Hickey and Micol Torresani of Norway set the tone early before a gutsy play by Sorcha Tiernan saw her hit the floor but nail a three. Ella O'Donnell, who was called up late in place of the injured Bridget Herlihy, extended the lead with a nice inside move as the hosts began to take control. An impressive opening quarter ended with Ireland ahead 23-16. It was a grittier start to the second quarter as both sides got tighter defensively. That switch favoured Ireland more, stretching the lead to 15 by the midpoint of the quarter. Hazel Finn's tenacity proved telling as Norway struggled to match Ireland's intensity. With captain Edel Thornton adding to the barrage, the hosts looked in fine form. A steal and score by Anna Horvig Wikstrøm rallied the visitors late in the quarter but Ireland still led 42-35 at the half. Ireland came out energised to start the second half, with Sorcha Tiernan finding O'Donnell on the fast break to put Ireland 10 in front again. A tighter defensive effort by the hosts made it hard going for Norway at the other end. The response from the visitors simply wasn't there. Ireland entered the final frame with a commanding 67-49 lead. The final quarter felt rather processional. Norway had the odd highlight, including a high pressure three from Maren Mildestvedt, but the result was never in doubt. Ireland took an impressive win that can be built upon. IRELAND: Edel Thornton, Enya Maguire, Kate Hickey, Sarah Hickey, Hazel Finn, Lauryn Homan, Abigail Rafferty, Ella O'Donnell, Annaliese Murphy, Sorcha Tiernan, Kara McCleane, Lorraine Scanlon NORWAY: Stine Austgulen, Synne Jacobsen, Sunniva Sørbye. Severine Uggen, Maren Mildestvedt, Karoline Teigland, Vilde Havnes, Micol Torresani, Anna Horvig Wikstrøm, Aiva Julirud

Ireland consider withdrawing from FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2027 qualifiers following draw with Israel
Basketball Ireland have issued a statement expressing concern over the ongoing crisis in Gaza, as they consider withdrawing from the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2027 qualifiers after being drawn in a group with Israel. At present, the governing body has spoken with FIBA Europe and are awaiting further clarification. "Basketball Ireland is extremely alarmed by the ongoing humanitarian situation in Gaza," they outlined in a press release on Wednesday. "And as such we are assessing our next steps following today's FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2027 Qualifiers draw, which saw Ireland drawn in Group A alongside Israel, in addition to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Luxembourg." This draw echoes a similar lottery that saw the Irish women's basketball team participate against Israel during the Women's EuroBasket 2025 Qualifiers in November 2024. This fixture was met with protest from the Irish players who refused to shake hands with their opponents. Should Ireland fail to participate in their first away qualifier against Israel, they will be subject to a fine of up to €80,000. Subsequently, failure to take part in their return fixture against Israel will result in a fine of up to €100,000 and removal from the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2027 Qualifiers and the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2029 Qualifiers. If Ireland elects to withdraw from the Women's EuroBasket 2027 qualifying campaign altogether before it starts, they would be applied a fine of up to €30,000. Additionally, FIBA Europe rules state that they "may impose additional sanctions according to the FIBA Internal Regulations - Book 1 - General Provisions (Chapter 6)" which is concerned with 'disqualification from a competition in progress and/or exclusion from future competitions'.
