World stock markets tumbled on Friday and oil prices surged as Israel launched a military strike on Iran, sparking a rush into safe havens such as gold, dollar and Swiss franc.
In Hong Kong, the benchmark Hang Seng Index ended the trading day down 142 points, or 0.59 percent to close at 23,892.
The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index edged down 0.85 percent to end at 8,655 while the Hang Seng Tech Index dropped 1.72 percent to close at 5,239.
Over the border, the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index ended down 0.75 percent at 3,377 while the Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.1 percent lower at 10,122.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 1.13 percent to close at 2,043.
However, the risk-off sentiment lifted gold and miners' shares, with key performers including Western Region Gold, Shandong Gold Mining and Zhongjin Gold Corp all closing more than two percent higher.
In Tokyo, the benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, closed at 37,834, down 338 points, or 0.89 percent.
The index plunged by over 600 points at one stage after Israel announced a large-scale strike on Iranian nuclear-related and military facilities.
As risk aversion intensified, the yen appreciated to the upper 142 yen range per US dollar, reinforcing selling pressure on stock index futures.
The stronger yen, a typical safe-haven currency, contributed to declines across major Japanese equities.
Crude oil jumped as much as 14 percent at one point to almost US$79 a barrel, before pulling back to around US$74 – still up more than five percent on the day and set for the biggest one-day jump since 2022. US oil futures rose over US$5 to US$73.14.
Gold, a classic safe-haven at times of global uncertainty, rose to US$3,416 per ounce, bringing it close to the record high of US$3,500.05 from April.
The rush to safety was matched by a dash out of risk assets.
US stock futures fell over 1.5 percent and European shares dropped one percent at the open. (Reuters/Xinhua)

SAR to target markets with 'the best returns': CE

SAR to target markets with 'the best returns': CE The CE says the government will do more to connect with more countries and regions around the world. Photo: RTHK Frank Yung reports Hong Kong should set its sights on markets with "the best returns in the shortest time" as the government connects with more countries and regions around the world, the city's leader has said. Chief Executive John Lee said while many private businesses have started seeking new markets to diversify risks amid the Sino-US tariffs war, there's a need for his administration to do the same. "There are just so many different parts of this world that we can do good business and build relations with. I'll expand my network. I'll not just focus on one or two countries or markets," he said. To generate the best returns for Hong Kong, it should look for potential markets that are mutually attractive, the CE said. He added they must also place emphasis on the country and the SAR. Lee has made several overseas visits, including to Asean countries and the Middle East, to help promote the city. On possible future trips, he said there's room to develop trade with South American countries, and the Central Asia region also has potential. Belt and Road countries are also under the administration's radar, according to the city's leader. He acknowledged the presence of both "supporting forces" and "counter-currents" in the SAR's charm offensive. "[When] the counter-current is against me, if I still want to swim in that direction, I swim double fast, I make double the effort. I'm asking everybody in the government to double the effort, tell Hong Kong's true story," Lee said. The CE added that Hong Kong must work hard to continue attracting investment and professionals from outside the territory. "Investment is something that drives changes, investment is also something that drives talents to come and talents to remain, because investment leads to actual business," he said.

US stocks fall as investors pare risk on Iran conflict

US stocks fall as investors pare risk on Iran conflict Major indices on Wall Street each lost more than one percent on Friday. Photo: AFP Wall Street stocks finished sharply lower on Friday as Iran launched counterstrikes in response to Israeli air strikes, leaving most non-petroleum equities lower. While oil producers and service companies rallied with oil prices, major indices spent the entire session in the red as investors shunned risk ahead of the weekend. "After having a pretty solid run in May and the first part of June, markets found an excuse to take some profits," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist of B Riley Wealth. The Dow Jones finished down 1.8 percent at 42,197. The S&P 500 shed 1.1 percent to 5,976, while the Nasdaq dropped 1.3 percent to 19,406. Analysts described Friday's selling as orderly. Investors "are paring back some risk, but this is hardly a panicky sell-off," said Steve Sosnick of Interactive Brokers. The market is partially in "a wait and see approach to what happens over the weekend because it's obviously a very fluid volatile situation," Sosnick added. Credit card and payment companies were under pressure following a Wall Street Journal report that Walmart and Amazon are exploring the issuance of stablecoins, potentially threatening conventional payment methods. Visa and PayPal both dropped around five percent, while American Express lost 3.4 percent. Adobe sank 5.3 percent despite reporting higher than expected profits as analysts pointed to disappointment that the company's artificial intelligence investments have not resulted in more revenue growth so far. But a more than seven percent rise in crude prices in the wake of the Iran-Israel conflict lifted Halliburton by 5.5 percent and ConocoPhillips 2.4 percent. (AFP)

Govt plans to charge new Kowloon tunnel users in 2026

Govt plans to charge new Kowloon tunnel users in 2026 The government also plans to raise tolls for Shing Mun Tunnel (pictured), as well as Aberdeen Tunnel. File photo: RTHK The government said on Friday it plans to charge HK$10 for vehicles using the Central Kowloon Route, while raising tolls for two existing tunnels. It said the toll for users of the new tunnel would be the same for all types of vehicles, while it also wants to charge HK$8 instead of HK$5 for those using the Aberdeen and Shing Mun tunnels. In documents submitted to the legislature, the Transport and Logistics Bureau said public affordability was among the issues that officials had taken into account in making the proposals. It said the higher charges are expected to have a minimal impact on traffic for the two existing tunnels, but the toll hike would double the revenue generated, to around HK$289 million a year. Officials plan to table legal amendments within this Legco year, and if lawmakers approve them, the new charges could take effect within a month. The new route in Kowloon is due to open partially later this year. Officials estimate the tolls from the new route would add HK$257 million a year to public coffers. They said the fee would allow the new tunnel to absorb around one fifth of the East-West bound traffic in Kowloon, easing traffic congestion in busy districts such as Yau Tsim Mong, Kowloon City and Sham Shui Po. If lawmakers approve the proposal, the government plans to charge road users in the middle of next year, when the entire route is scheduled to be completed. The legislature's transport panel is due to discuss the matter in a week.
