BYU coach on Jake Retzlaff's transfer status, potential suspension: ‘Prep for everything'

New York Times08-07-2025
The status of BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff remains unclear, after reports that Retzlaff is expected to transfer due to a potential suspension for violating the school's honor code. At Big 12 media days on Tuesday, coach Kalani Sitake did not have a definitive update on Retzlaff's situation but told The Athletic he will 'prep for everything.'

Reports of Retzlaff's potential suspension and transfer come on the heels of a civil lawsuit filed against Retzlaff for sexual assault. The lawsuit has since been withdrawn.
'First of all, I love Jake Retzlaff and what he's done for our program. I think it would be inappropriate for me to speak for him,' Sitake said. 'It's his right to speak for himself and make whatever statements that he needs to make first about his situation. My job as a head coach is to get the team ready to go, no matter what the end result is going to be.'
In May, a civil lawsuit filed by a Salt Lake City woman accused Retzlaff of sexual assault and battery stemming from a 2023 incident. Retzlaff denied the allegations and maintained his innocence while stating he had consensual sex with the woman. The woman withdrew the suit and a judge granted a joint dismissal last month, but Retzlaff's admission of a premarital sexual encounter still violates school rules.
BYU, which is part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, enforces an eight-point honor code that requires students to 'live a chaste and virtuous life, including abstaining from sexual relations outside marriage between a man and a woman.'
The quarterback could face a seven-game suspension if he returns to the Cougars in 2025, according to multiple reports.
Sitake said Tuesday he could not comment on whether the suspension will be upheld if Retzlaff does not transfer. Asked if he had a timeline for when Retzlaff will make a decision and the matter will get resolved, Sitake just said he needs to know 'before the first game.'
'As a coach, you're prepping for the worst-case scenario. The fact that we could be in a quarterback competition, that's gonna be the key,' Sitake said. 'We'll have somebody there to catch the snap. We just have to let them win it out. Regardless of whether Jake is back or not, the best will play, that's the standard that I have.'

Retzlaff threw for 2,947 yards, 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for a BYU team that finished 11-2 and ranked No. 13 in the final Associated Press poll. Junior Treyson Bourguet, redshirt sophomore McCae Hillstead and freshman Bear Bachmeier would likely compete at quarterback if Retzlaff does not return.

NHL: Acquitted players in sexual assault case 'ineligible' to play pending review

The NHL said the five players acquitted of sexual assault in the Hockey Canada case aren't eligible to play in the league while it conducts a review of the case. 'The allegations made in this case, even if not determined to have been criminal, were very disturbing and the behavior at issue was unacceptable,' the league said in a statement on Thursday, July 24, according to The Athletic. 'We will be reviewing and considering the judge's findings. While we conduct that analysis and determine next steps, the players charged in this case are ineligible to play in the league.' Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Dillon Dubé, Cal Foote and Alex Formenton were found not guilty of sexual assault by a judge on Thursday and McLeod was acquitted of a secondary charge of being a party to the offense. All five were in London, Ontario, in June 2018 for a Hockey Canada gala celebrating their gold medal in the world junior hockey championship. Police charged them with sexually assaulting a woman in a hotel room, but Justice Maria Carroccia ruled that she didn't find the complainant's evidence "credible or reliable." All but Formenton were with NHL teams at the time they were charged in February 2024. The other four took leaves of absence and were cut loose when their teams didn't give them qualifying offers that June. All five are unrestricted free agents. The NHL Players' Association disagreed with the league's action, noting that the players had been acquitted of all charges. "After missing more than a full season of their respective NHL careers, they should now have the opportunity to return to work," the NHLPA said in a statement. "The NHL's declaration that the Players are 'ineligible' to play pending its further analysis of the Court's findings is inconsistent with the discipline procedures set forth in the CBA. We are addressing this dispute with the League and will have no further comment at this time."

WVU extends athletic director Wren Baker's contract through 2032

MORGANTOWN — WVU will not be searching for a new athletic director any time soon, as Wren Baker has reached a second contract extension with the school. The extension, which became official with Baker's signature on June 5, keeps Baker tied to the university through Dec. 31, 2032, roughly 10 years after first bringing him to Morgantown from North Texas. The second amendment adds two more years to Baker's contract, as well as increasing some of his retention incentives. WVU president Michael T. Benson announced Baker's contract extension Thursday morning on MetroNews Talkline, but it was former president E. Gordon Gee who negotiated the deal with Baker. 'He has told me he is very happy here and his wife and daughters are very happy here,' Benson said on the radio show. 'We have extended his contract. He is doing an unbelievable job. He is the new chair of the athletic directors within the Big 12. I have been on a few calls already with that group. He is very well respected.' So well respected that there had been whispers in recent months that Baker could be recruited away from WVU. His name had been associated with both Oklahoma and TCU as a potential candidate. A native of Valliant, Okla., Baker will earn $1.3 million — plus incentives and a retention bonus — this year. In the additional seven years, his salary increases $100,000 each year. In 2032, Baker will earn $2 million. Over the lifetime of the extension, Baker's base salary will reach a combined $13.2 million, an average of $1.65 million per year. His retention incentive — recorded July 1 of every year — also became more consistent. Under the previous deal, Baker earned an additional $200,000 earlier this month, but was not due another retention bonus until 2026 and then again in 2028 and 2030. Under the latest amendment, Baker will now earn a $200,000 retention bonus every July, except for 2030 and 2032, when it increases to $500,000. The retention bonus is paid to Baker as long as he remains employed at WVU as of July 1 each year. Gee completed the amendment by writing, 'I extend and amend your appointment with pleasure for the continued benefit of West Virginia University.' Baker's buyout is $1 million if he were to leave for another school this year. It drops to $800,000 in 2026 and then drops a continual $200,000 per year through 2029. From 2030-31, Baker's buyout is $100,000 per year and it becomes $0 in 2032. Baker was first hired at WVU as the school's 13th athletic director on Nov. 30, 2022 and received his first contract extension in May of 2024. His tenure at the school has covered many WVU athletic successes, but also some chaotic moments. Over his first 30 months as the school's athletic director, Baker has overseen three head coaching changes within the men's basketball program, including the forced resignation of Hall-of-Fame coach Bob Huggins. Baker also hired Rich Rodriguez as football coach after firing Neal Brown earlier this year. He hired Mark Kellogg as the women's basketball coach in 2023, after former coach Dawn Plitzuweit left after one season. Steve Sabins also became the successor to former WVU baseball coach Randy Mazey under Baker's watch. In recent days, Baker successfully extended the contracts of Kellogg, Sabins and rifle coach Jon Hammond, as well as finalizing the contract of WVU men's basketball coach Ross Hodge. 'You look at the coaches he just extended a few days ago and the hire of Rich Rod has gotten people very animated and very excited, and coach Hodge,' Benson said. 'I am very impressed with the operation and how well he is doing in terms of revenue generation and forward thinking about where we want to take the university.'
