‘Filthiest perpetrator' handed life in jail for raping 91-year-old woman
A man who raped a 91-year-old woman in Limpopo has been described as 'one of the filthiest perpetrators' after being sentenced to life in prison for the heinous crime.
Musa Walter Chabalala of Tshisaulu village appeared in the Thohoyandou High Court sitting at the Waterval Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, where sentence was handed down.
Sentence
The court sentenced Chabalala to multiple terms of direct imprisonment, including life in prison for rape, 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances, and five years for housebreaking with intent to commit an offence.

The sentencing follows the court's finding that Chabalala was guilty of a heinous attack on the 91-year-old woman in her home on 21 August 2020 in Tshisaulu village.
Rape
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said the court heard how Chabalala forcefully gained entry into the victim's home by opening a window and breaking the door to her bedroom.
'Armed with a knife, he threatened the elderly woman, instructed her to hide under a blanket, and demanded money.
'He managed to steal approximately R40 and a sound system, then forced the victim to undress and raped her multiple times before fleeing the scene,' Malabi-Dzhangi said.
Arrest
Malabi-Dzhangi said the traumatised elderly woman immediately reported the incident, and a thorough police investigation, led by police, later linked the accused through forensic evidence.
'Despite pleading not guilty, the state, represented by Advocate Steven Muavha, presented compelling evidence that proved Chabalala's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
'In aggravation of sentence, the prosecution argued that rape has reached pandemic levels in the Vhembe district, and harsher sentences are necessary to protect vulnerable citizens, especially the elderly,' Malabi-Dzhangi said.
'Filthiest perpetrators
Malabi-Dzhangi said the court also heard Chabalala is a repeat offender, undeterred by previous convictions.
'In delivering his judgment, Judge Thogomelani Caution Tshidada described the accused as 'one of the filthiest perpetrators who does not deserve to live in our communities.'
'The judge lamented that the victim was old enough to be the accused's grandmother and should have been treated with dignity and respect. He noted the accused's lack of remorse and found no mitigating factors to justify leniency,' Malabi-Dzhangi said.
Sentenced welcomed
The NPA has welcomed the sentence, saying it trusts it will serve as a strong deterrent to would-be offenders.
Advocate Ivy Thenga, Director of Public Prosecutions in Limpopo, commended the prosecution and investigation teams for their diligence and commitment to justice.
'This sentence reinforces our resolve to protect the most vulnerable in our society and ensure that justice prevails,' said Advocate Thenga.

Nkuna declared dead at scene 'During the ordeal, Sibuyi accused one of the victims of having received an RAF payout, robbed them of a cellphone and R1 800 in cash, and fired multiple shots at them,' Nyuswa said in a statement on Friday. Guilty plea In court, Sibuyi admitted his actions were unlawful and entered into a Section 105A plea and sentence agreement with the state. Safa boss Danny Jordaan's fight to ditch fraud charges stalled by NPA changes
Jordaan is accused of misusing R1.3 million from Safa for his personal benefit. A decision on South African Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan's bid to have his fraud charges dropped has not yet been made, with the case postponed for further proceedings. On Friday, Jordaan, Safa chief financial officer (CFO) Gronie Hluyo, and businessman Trevor Neethling made a brief appearance before the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Palm Ridge, Gauteng. The trio face charges of conspiracy to commit fraud, theft, and fraud, and are each out on R20 000 bail. Danny Jordaan seeks withdrawal of fraud charges State prosecutor Moagi Malebati told the court that no decision had been reached on all the accused's representations to have their charges withdrawn. He explained that a leadership change within the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) had caused delays. 'The unfortunate part is that he left office before he could make a decision and sign off on his decision. Amantle Samane's family in pain as her killer found guilty
The family of six-year-old Amantle Samane, who was murdered in Soweto last year, are struggling to contain the pain caused by her killer Phethe Sara Simiao. The Mozambican, who worked as a welder, was found guilty of rape, kidnapping, murder and contravention of the Immigration Act in the Johannesburg high court on Friday. He pleaded guilty earlier in the day, saying he was intoxicated when, on October 21 2024, he saw the child playing on the street, took her to his backyard shack, kept her there against her will, raped and strangled her. His case was postponed to Tuesday for pre-sentencing proceedings. Amantle's mother Ntombizodwa Samane sobbed when the plea statement was read into the court record. The family's spokesperson Brenda Mjiyako said it was a heartbreaking session when they heard his version of the murder. 'It brought back the memories: of her last day, the pictures of where we found Amantle deceased, and the mortuary. 'The mother broke down, we all broke down in tears. We knew this day would come but we didn't think it would be so difficult. When they were reading, step by step what had happened, you could reflect back. It was painful.' She said what Simiao did was inhuman. 'There is no normal human being who can do what [he] did to Amantle. 'Next week, on Tuesday, is the beginning of sentencing. Her mother will be on the stand again and it is Amantle's birthday on Tuesday. It is not going to be easy,' she said. Amantle was playing with other children across the street from her home that day. Her mother was preparing clothes for her grade R graduation ceremony and completing other household chores, TimesLIVE reported previously. When she finished, she looked outside and saw Amantle was not there. She began searching and made the discovery of her child's body, partially undressed and covered in a blanket, only a few doors away. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane welcomed the decision by Simiao to not waste the NPA and the court's time by pleading guilty. 'We look forward to the next step, which is pre-sentencing proceedings. As the state, we will prepare a victim impact report and further evidence will also be led' she said.
